Nissan CVT FAIL @107k miles! (P1778)

2021 ж. 3 Қаң.
256 825 Рет қаралды

BOOM, another Nissan with major CVT problems!
This 2012 Nissan Rogue at 107k miles refuses to shift to higher gear ratios.
Feels like the transmission is slipping severely when torque is applied.
Several codes are set, but the P1778-Step Motor Failure comes back instantly.
Enjoy!
Ivan

To pick up couches, washing machine, etc. my utility trailer is like 1,300lbs itself. Recently i pulled my quad on my utility trailer from ny to ga. no issues. i keep the fluid and filter changed. • Change the step motor and put new oil in - it will run fine, unless Ivan didn't tell us everything the owner shared about the CVT behavior a bit before, before the issue. The job is labor intensive and quite messy - on most CVT the stepper motor is not accessible without removing the valve-body. I'm not a mechanic and took me 5h to do that + it took me 2h extra to find on the web witch bolts to remove in order to get the valve-body out. Ivan is a master, plus he has the tools and probably his alldata subscription will give him the bolts location in a jiffy.

  • I'm pretty sure the stepper motor and 4 coils are all accessible if you drop the pan and remove the valve body. Would definitely have been worth investigating. Nissan is big about recommending replacement of the CVT for almost any reason at all. The do the same thing with the TC. Instead of replacing seals they just say replace entire unit. This is achieved via friction modifiers added to various synthetic oils. As the oil goes through cycles of heating & cooling the molecular bonds loosen and you begin to get irregularities, In traditional transmission oils it's not a big deal if there's a bit of variation as the transmission isn't really at a risk of missing a very precise step & causing damage.

Especially if the town is hilly. Police around the country figured this out because when they ran regular "D" mode in their police cars driving around town constantly, it would destroy their transmissions. • I've done a few of these nissan cvt stepper motors replacement (same code). Its hit and miss something. Out if the 8 I did 2 being a Rogue 5 worked by just replacing the stepper motor. The other 3 unfortunately had no luck. Its not that bad of a job and the motor isnt that expensive.

    @lovetolearn5253@lovetolearn52533 жыл бұрын
    • Interesting. For the ones that worked, I wonder if the transmission life has been severely shortened due to slipping.

      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics3 жыл бұрын
    • To be honest not sure but 3 of the 5 is over a year old and still strong. I had 2 Nissans come in 2 weeks ago both same code same issues. One had severe slippage (Rogue) and the other not to bad. The stepper motor fixed the severe one but not the other. I was actually shocked because i thought the table was turned. In my experience its not to bad of a job to do and seems to hold for a year or more.

    • @@gibson7654 unfortunately without seeing the car personally I couldn't give alot of info. In my experience I've never replaced a tcm for this code and I've done a few. In most cases it's the stepper or tranny unfortunately and I don't know any tranny shop that rebuilds them. Make sure you get a good oem stepper motor. In the last 5 years me and my dad has seen more bad parts out off the box then in my dads 40 years in business. I'm not sure what's going on but everything is junk lately. Good luck and sorry I couldn't help more.

  • I did a video on this too it was a P1777. Lack of maintenance causes this...I replaced the step motor and it was good for 4 months then it quit again, I did a trans swap and was good, still going strong they said. People wait too long and don’t change the fluid every 50k at least. Bummer. These aren’t fun as you know.

I use the recommended Nissan CVT fluids. With these many miles ,I've had the engine coils go bad. Mechanics advice me to replace the CVT. While otherd found the engine coils . We changed the engine coils now the engine and transmission run great.
