Too many doctored photos now, evey picture has been embellished with added color vibrance so that it looks more vivid than reality! I see people who often share these scenic photos pn fb, with stunningly vivid, vibrant colors that make our reality look dull by comparison. I prefer more realistic looking images.
This is why when you program something you use "else-if" for every alternative option you think is possible, reserving "else" for some sort of failsafe or reset when something happens you never thought would be possible in the first place. People and computers both have an amazing knack for finding the exceptions you never saw coming.

Couple corrections, converting from a smaller colour space (sRGB) to a larger one (ProFoto RGB) doesn't add the new colours in (unless you're using a smart object in Photoshop from a RAW file) however the opposite is true. The slight shift you see is because there isn't a 100% overlap between the 2 colour spaces. The TRUE colour space is known as Lab (not prounounced Lab, but L*a*b.) Colour is my job, so I can nerd out on this one lol
Color is my job too … what exactly do you mean by “the true color space is Lab?”
@@squirming_squirrels in the world of computers, the colour space with the widest gamut is the Lab colour space
You might be able to answer something that made me curious about the video... When he converts the colour profile, the effect is a very strong dulling of the landscape picture. However, screenshotting the picture also converts the colour profile (rendering the picture safe), so my question is how is screenshotting the picture able to maintain the same subjective look of the picture where changing the colour profile doesn't.
@@Reckoner000 effectively a screenshot is a new picture. Processed separately. It has its own rendered colour space, bit depth and metadata. Think of it like a scanner to give a simple answer, does that help?
@@dazlock4491 LAB, like all device-less spaces, does not have a gamut. Gamut is defined by the primaries’ position within a device-less space, such as LAB. I’m still confused by your comment. LAB is used as an intermediate in color transformation. But that does not indicate that the “true” color space is LAB, only that it has the advantage that it is not defined by an arbitrary device. In fact, LAB can’t be the “true” color space, because LAB cannot exist outside of the computer. The “true” colorspace is the colorspace of the camera, as defined by the primaries of its Bayer Mask - regardless of however it’s been transformed down the line.

This is actually so interesting. I'm in the beginning of learning code as a cs major and I've messed up code because of rounding errors... Seeing that this still happens in high level programming with extremely sophisticated level of code is funny to me.
I have a decent understanding of color spaces and rgb, but this was hands down one of the most interesting videos I've seen in a long time. Great explanation, and it's crazy there weren't guards in place to prevent this!

Bro you again 😲
Just a clarification between converting between color spaces and assigning color spaces. Assign will just declare to the image that an existing value now reflects the value in the new color space (the value will not change just have different meaning), while convert will change the value to reflect the correct one in the new color space (assuming it fits, or it will clip or compress). The difference is assign will shift the colors as in the video, while convert you will still the closest possible colors to the new color space.
Cool video and very interesting how this crashed the phone… and I know I’m late to the chain here however the explanation regarding colour spaces isn’t quite correct. When adjusting colour spaces correctly it should mathematically map to similar colours. In saying that, highly vibrant colours won’t be the same, which is the whole reason why you use a bigger colour space. The reason why the photographer used prophoto RGB was because it was likely the largest colour bucket available to them and I’m displays that Cam show those colours it looks much nicer. If you are then viewing that photo in a different view in colour space (for example, the iPhone uses P3) it will read the meta data and then adjust accordingly. If it isn’t sure, it will treat the input source as sRGB. :)
I feel really bad for that poor photographer who just took an image of a nice landscape, and accidentally broke lots of phones because they edited the photo to make it look better. Maybe no other pixels in the image are exactly 255,255,255, but there's a lot of bright white pixels in the clouds that feel like they should also be responsible for this crash as well, no?
