Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 Review | Great Against All Odds
The Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 was supposed to be dead on arrival, being both late to the market and more expensive than the competition. Despite everything working against it, the OLED G8 manages to impress, even if it isn't quite worth list price.

Hi, thanks for the informative video, any updates on the amd + hdr cap of 400nits?
I upgraded from an Acer Predator X34 overclocked to 100hz I bought new in 2016 for $1000! The difference between it and this beautiful QD OLED is a breathtaking night and day difference!! Ive been replaying all of my old games just to experience the new level of immersion and realism that ive missed with the depth of HDR. If you are considering upgrading an older monitor, this is by far the biggest upgrade i've done to my computer in a long long time!
How the movie expperiences are like ?
@@midnightblue3285 very good. Especially any scenes that have a lot of dark lighting.
Should be noted that the warranty is depending on location. In some places, it is 3 years including burn-in coverage, so people should check in with how Samsung handles warranty in their country.
Got this 2 weeks ago at Bestbuy..$1300. Its features are similar to my S95B 65",. I use it primarily for gaming ( COD, MSFS) with a PC system (GPU 3080 FTW3) and see very satisfying performance. The mini connectors arent an issue in my case since a DP cable is included . I would agree brightness issues with OLED panels in general exist, especially in bright environments, the shear beauty of both the stunning visuals and the minimalist design can and does make this an attractive choice.
Now its on sale 😅
Should have waited it's on sale for $999
@@Megatrance9000 Many things that we perhaps should have waited for. In this case, I have no regrets. It serves my needs perfectly! If you have the means, go buy it!
@Megatrance9000 should have waited it's $750.
Hi man, I mainly play cod: warzone and dota 2, you recomend this monitor for thoose games ? I actually have a 27 inch monitor, 240 hz, 1440p and panel VA
Idk why it wasn’t discussed but this monitor is NOT for AMD graphics cards. The brightness only hits those numbers on nvidia cards not AMD. Check out monitors unboxed for their readings on it. If you have an amd card stay far far away from this.
Lol AMD sucks.
@@qdpqbp really?
Seriously???
We have NVdia so you stay away not us
@mapleleaf2827 the workaround is turning freesync off and running 120hz. I'd hardly say that's a viable alternative.
For the built in apps on the monitor, do the streaming shows/movies support HDR playback or does it just display in SDR?
Sorry to be off topic but have you reviewed the Sony X95L and I missed it?
i've had it since its release and i must say, it's the best one i've had although i've also had 42" 4k 144hz from aorus before and LG ultragear monitors.
Out of those which was your favorite?
@@SamZ by far this g8 oled, if the g9 oled came in early, i prolly have taken it instead. Oled from 1440p and above as well as 17ghz and above are more than enough reasons fo me.
4:05 its not dual USB-C ports. 1 is displayport alt-mode with 65W PD. 1 is usb peripheral which works with the usb-c alt-mode port. I put a usb-c hub into this and can do both keyboard and mouse on my work laptop. Not as good as a KVM, but i still find it very useful for 1 cable work laptop/rog ally (for setup or when using main PC on sim rig)
I have an benq 27 4k but i want an oled monitor, do you recommend me this monitor, the new g9 is too big for my desktop or maybe wait for the new 2024 models? Thanks
I remember the S9 infinity that was announced back in December to be released 3 months later. We still waiting.
In Brazil they are sellin the LS34BG850SLXZD. Is there any difference to the LS34BG850SNXZA?
I picked this monitor up at Best Buy a couple of weeks ago for $999 mainly because the new office setup didn't support my dual 27-inch curved monitors. I was pleasantly surprised with it, especially how often I have used the SmartTV features.
where i live G8 is cheaper than alienware monitors, so prices are subjective i guess in the end depending where someone lives.
I just got it for just under 900 I bought the g9 last year but that monitor is way too stretched for my liking, and the fact this one has smart features included is just the cherry on top, I don't have cable at home so almost all my TV consumption is usually via my smart tv apps so I feel like the price off msrp is really good
Is there any issue with the text? I want to use it for music production
Why do you use the smarttv features if it's connected to a PC? I don't understand the need.
@@Orlyy It's not a need, I just find it surprisingly useful. I prefer the use of the remote and there is no need to power on my PC.
how is the text rendering on this monitor? is it suitable for software developers/programmers and general productivity work?
Wait, You can’t take the display port to a port on your hub and use it with your laptop?
You missed a very big selling point: the G8 is passively cooled while the AW (and other monitors in this category) has fans, and some of them are actually really nosiy and have obnoxious fan curves.
I got this for $950 plus tax from Samsung with a military discount. It will be delivered this week. I am downgrading from a traditional 42 inch 4k Aorus because the thing was just too big.
What about DRM for TizenOS? Most streaming services limit content to 1080p maximum on a web browser due to software DRM being terrible. To get 4K you need hardware DRM available on phones, STBs, TVs, etc.. Can you watch in 4K using the built in apps?
in-built youtube app offers up to 1440p resolution, other apps such as disney+ and netflix downsample 4k to 2k (still looks clean). most people using this monitor don't have that problem... I use the monitor with my PC over DP. microsoft edge browser allows native 4k video playback (throw in a ad-blocker extension) and I do all my streaming/playback from my PC.
Can't wait for the v2 to release. If it can be 4k, 240hz, glossy with DP 2 I will be so happy.
When is it coming out
SAMEEEEEEEE, I'm still waiting for it ! All i want is 4k 175hz !
@JoseCamargo02 Hopefully sometime next year but nothing has been confirmed yet. They've brought out their second revision of the oled g9 recently, so as trends go they should do the same with the g8 eventually
I’ll receive this monitor next week. Right now I play on a MSI ultrawide monitor with VA panel.
how was it now that you spend on it 6 months?
Will there be a video about ROG 4k 240hz monitor?
Having issues connecting this to my Alienware RTX 3080 Desktop PC. Bought the micro hdmi to hdmi cable and it’s not connecting even when the PC is on (keeps saying to turn on device) . Can easily mirror this to my MacBook Pro which works fantastic. Very frustrating to troubleshoot for my PC !!! Or do I need to specifically buy an hdmi 2.1 cable with display port/hdmi adapter ?
Honestly the ports are a deal breaker when I can get other monitors with the same panel. With the way I have my cable ran, I require a long displayport cable and would have to by a new one and reroute it or throw an adapter into the chain for no reason. I don't have much experience with mini DP, but I know micro HDMI is garbage and very prone to breaking. Also like you mentioned, 2 USB C inputs is a waste. It's great for connecting a laptop, but how many laptops will you have connected at the same time, especially considering this is a gaming monitor. Other monitors have hubs or KVM switches which would be infinitely more useful.
Lol you would skip a monitor because it uses mini DP, just don't move it ???
@@Phasma6969 Yes, especially when I can get other monitors with the exact same panel. This monitor provides no meaningful upgrade over those, but has a serious downgrade in regards to ports.
@@Phasma6969There's zero reason for this large monitor to NOT have full-sized ports for DisplayPort when the cheaper Alienware monitor has full-sized ports and can easily go toe to toe vs this Samsung monitor. I say that as a Samsung fan by the way. I shouldn't have to buy another cable or some adapter to connect certain devices to this monitor just because it doesn't have full-sized ports. It's a damn monitor. Not some smartphone seeking to be thinner.
@@PSYCHOV3N0M you right
I had ps vita both ones the one with oled & the one with lcd & I can oled make gaming stand out even more
Samsung needs to fix QC on monitors. Mine had a faulty mini DP port. Also why put non -standart ports on a PC monitor. Good luck finding a decent micro HDMI to HDMI cable😂

Just picked this up a couple of days ago after getting a 4080 a week before. It’s incredible and a huge step up from my old Samsung 32”

I just got mine for 959. Hopefully i have better luck with it than i have had with their appliances. Not a fan of the ports at all but it is what it is. Nice looking monitor.
Quick question, did you have to purchase a mini 2.1 hdmi adapter to get 120hz 4k? I can buy this for USD 679 this weekend, quite tempted.
@@madsisak No you can use the mini display port cable that it comes with and get 174 hz. This is not a 4k monitor though it's 1440 p. If you want 4k Samsung makes a g8 odyssey which isn't ultra wide or oled. You might have the 2 confused. Make sure you do your research because I was confused too. For 679 you might be looking at the different monitor. Both are great monitors but I prefer OLED. Can I ask what your using for a PC?
@@jimmytimber7074 Hey there, thx for the quick reply to such an old post. Im lookin at the Samsung 175hz, ultra wide, 34" OLED, 3440x1440p (sorry, ment 2.4K). price tag is with discount and tax refunds to my company btw. Figured I'd sell my 1440p G5 for 250$, which would make the whole deal a bargain.
@@madsisak well it's a very nice monitor. In my opinion it's one of the nicest on the market but it takes a hell of a GPU to play new games on. I have a 4080 and some games push it.
you forgot to mention the Alienware lacks the 2.1 hdmi port if you are planning to use it with a console
Picked this up when it was on sale for 999.00. No regerts
The Apps for streaming make more sense than you might think. Pc is not good for streaming hdr even in apps. Having it built in would be kindanice.
if a manufacturer doesn't at least match DELL/Alienwares 3 year warranty including burn in they are an instant no-go IMO

Thank you! Are 20 Point White Balance controls available in the gaming or sRGB mode? Is it actually possible to calibrate this with a greater precision without a huge input latency penalty? Does the latency increase when displaying in 16:9 aspect ratio for games w/o ultra wide support and consoles? I'd appreciate the answer very much since this matters A LOT for me.
Probably don’t take Samsung of colours accuracy is important for you. In my experience all the Samsung monitors I’ve had tend to flicker, have inconsistent gamma every time you turn off and on again… I’ve had one that sometimes randomly opens with a slight green filter too, hard to see but enough to break your hard work… And input latency gets randomly very high as well on this model so there’s that

@@MD-nf6sv Oh wow... That blows, man. I guess they deserve their reputation for having subpar software implementation. A real shame. Does the input latency thing actually seem to be completely random, or do you suspect any kinds of patterns? Could it have something to do with changing image modes, enabling gamut clamps (with latter happening automatically due to the lack of a dedicated sRGB setting, which is goddamn ridiculous btw) and such?
@@MD-nf6sv And thank you very much for your input!
@@juanblanco7898 It really seemed like it happens randomly, but fixing it for me was kinda always by turning Game mode off, but then you lose VRR which is not ideal... It seemed different from monitor to monitor from what I read on reddit so it's a bit of a lottery... but also it's one of those issues that most people wouldn't normally notice. so probably more widespread than we think
The usb-c is one upstream and one downstream. That's all the connectivity you need, so I'm not sure why you complained there's no usb-a connections?
Can't wait for the G8 v2 to release ! hopefully this end of year around november, to fix the issues of this first version (slow OS, mini HDMI port,..)
slow os has been fixed in updates 2 months ago...i have zero issues after that
@@Guccaaa thanks for the info! Do you recommend this G8 ? Any big cons to consider not buying it ?
I ended up going with the Alienware Aw3423dwf (same panel) It was the same price as the G8. Main reasoning was full size ports and 3 year warranty. I do prefer the stand on the G8 as it doesn't stick out as much but I plan on getting a VESA arm mount anyways. @@Alex-tc1eg
@@Alex-tc1eg me too , need some info
@@mightybro439 finally I couldn’t wait coz my previous was going to die… but I don’t regret buying the G8, it’s just stunning screen ! The issues have been fixed with the updates. I don’t use the OS anyway, to be honest it’s a gadget tool, if you have a smart tv you won’t use it. And as many said already, waiting for the V2 doesn’t really worse it as Samsung will probably release almost same screen with few different things as AlienWare did and for higher price. While we can get the G8 now for quite good price, around under 1000€. So if you can wait, why not going for V2 but for 1300-1500€ for probably nothing better than V1… or Perhaps, better wait for Black Friday if you can and then buy the v1 even cheaper with chance. In the UK I bought this at a good discount so happy with the purchase ..
how are you finding it? what’s your experience with it, is it any good? my boyfriend is a gamer so i’m looking at this to get for him, so i’m just wondering if it’s actually good or not?
It’s nice . I haven’t used it for gaming but don’t think it should have any issues . I use it for office purpose and watching streaming services and it’s Pretty good for the price I paid .
This monitor will work properly if a conect a ps5 directly?
Seen it for 860€ already, same price as the Alienware. I'm definitely thinking of picking up the Samsung.
Managed to snag a G8 for 650 usd pre-sales tax. Upgrade-wise, nothing comes even close to what I have witnessed after purchasing this piece of hardware. Absolutely astounding beauty!
good price as well, i can barely find it below $1100 after tax in my country
@@MultiNakir I can actually relate with you mate. I have only recently moved to US from a third world country where every computer parts & hardware are expensive af. They can't solve that in this monitor which lacks a polarizer filter.
What are your thoughts on a side-by-side comparison between the OLED G8 and the Neo G8? Which would you prefer?
Are you using a pc or Xbox-PlayStation?
So how do you prevent screen burn on on something permanent like your Windows taskbar. I mean, I still have the Activate Windows watermark after 6 months.. despite buying 3 legit Windows 10 keys, I can't get my copy of Windows 10 to activate.
what the experience to work on curved monitors?
got mine new fro 800 bugs recently, seems like a good deal even with the next gen qd led on the horizon
Managed to get it for 930 USD from Amazon just eating for delivery now
All things being equal...so it boils down to the "little things" to stand out from the crowd. The I/O is DUMB beyond comprehension. One year warranty? HARD PASS.
It’s silent and well calibrated and made. I don’t like the mini ports but it’s the best one using that panel imo. If you can get it on sale. Monitors unboxed does a good job looking at all 5 of them
The DWF is def the best. It is down 10hz refresh but is about on par with the other QD-OLED otherwise... and it comes with the best warranty and frequently drops below $1K. It's no contest.
@@paskowitzAgreed and I say that as a Samsung fan. Samsung made some very stupid decisions with this monitor.
3 years, not 1.
What is wrong with mini port? Does the bandwidth become lower or somethibg else?
Eh... Stand is perfect, and its generally aesthetically pleasing but that's largely it. The IO in the back is weird and the monitor's smart OS is more of a hinderance. Overall I still think the Alienware version is better designed as a monitor.
does it have hardware calibration?
Almost ordered this monitor yesterday but it being OLED and Samsung UK not covering a screen burn under warranty, iNo option but had to SKIP as I'm using my monitor for work and gaming. So it says on for like 10 hours per day so Screen burn if a question of when not if. You don't wanna bin £1000 monitor in 2 years.

I was gonna buy a 27 inch monitor but after I saw this video I went for the G8. Thank you for this video.

Noticed that you mentioned this can't be connected via USB C as they are only for charging, yet again didn't show it in use, as the promotional material again has it as being able to connect to a laptop via USB type C w/Display and charging.
Would an 8k micro hdmi to hdmi cable work with a ps5 connecting to the odyssey g8?
Did you already find out? I'm also trying to get some information on that topic.
I want to connect my ps5 with Micro hdmi to this display. Which micro hdmi cable do I need?
42” LG OLED for me, that thing is actually 4K! (started using a 27” 4K six years ago..), and bigger, and cheaper, and bright enough, and without (just not my preference) things like being curved or ultra wide.
42" LG OLED - 104ppi. 34" ultrawide 110ppi. I used to have a 27" 4K monitor was sooo crisp at 27", but on c1 oled 48" it's nowhere the same. and my 65" 4K TV, even less.
@@jimtepedino9295 yeah, ppi at 27” 4k is gorgeous. I would immediately buy a 42” with an 8k panel, just for productivity work. Look at apple screens. They know how important ppi is. But I guess no manufacturer will produce these specs in the near future..
which cable would you use for gaming? mini hdmi or display port?
Micro Hdmi because there is a lot of bugs with display port. Mine turned often off with 175 hz and display port. To wake it up I needed to lower hz. With micro hdmi to hdmi I have no issues.
never played on monitor would this be ideal for my ps5? Looking for a 32/34 inch curved gaming monitor just don't know what 1 to buy! Can you help me decide 🤔
I have teh same question
Have anyone who has this monitor hear a high pitch noise that changes depending on whats on display? it's really weird, it disappears sometimes and with some applications or different colors it makes that really annoying high pitch noise that comes from the monitor itself. I want to know if it's somehow normal or not to contact technical support.
It's called coil whine. Poor designed power circuits inside these monitors cause that. It's usually audible when power usage of the monitor is low. Try plugging some USB devices e.g. wireless mouse receivers, keyboards to the monitor and it may go away.
Yep it’s Coil Whine. Grounded it with USB seems to help a bit
Should have switched it out
How do I use this with my Xbox.????????? Please help
What I would really like is if they made a 4K 27in or 32in QD-OLED 16:9 monitor that is not curved. I absolutely hate curved screens and already tried an UW monitor and it just wasn't for me. My current monitor is 4K so I also don't want to go backwards to 1440p.
Dough Technology (Eve) has both coming out tho they’ve seem to be a problematic company in the past.
@cgwoz Yeah that's the gist I got. I've seen people say they're still waiting on the Eve Spectrum's they ordered a year or two ago. Definitely seems somewhat shady to me.
Yeah I guess its really dependent on each order. I ordered an old Eve Spectrum 4k and it came about 6 months after I bought it, however at the time, it was 100% the best gaming monitor I ever used. As soon as I post this, it'll change, but right now at the time of writing, they're both the same price at $1000. I went ahead and bought the G8 over the Alienware. I hope the burn in issue doesn't bite me in the ass later on in life, but hey.
Good looking monitor. Not sure why they keep choosing to skimp on the inputs and do weird stuff gambling with potential buyers decision. I've heard it all why that doesn't matter bc of xyz but seriously why not spend an extra $50 or whatever and make sure there's nothing to criticize and get the sale for sure?
Exactly.
Yeah whoever gave that the architectural green light needs to be sacked. It’s different just to be different with no logical advantage
Can you somehow connect a PS5 to this monitor? Does anyone has experience using a HDMI Micro to HDMI Adapter? Are you than still able to use it with 120hz?

With 500 dollars extra they should have made the usb c ports thunderbolt4
For ps5 would this be good
Can I put this monitor vertically????
34 inch is just too small for me. Hopefully they bring a 45 inch flat model.
I don't get it why they sell this only in gray/white and not also in black. Even if I would opt to buy this monitor, I wouldn't because it doesn't fit aesthetically in my room. I know it's complaining at a high level, but at least for me this is a dealbreaker.

Ive tried finding it for europe/denmark. Not easy to find
Complaining about a second USBC port is the dumbest thing ever. The world needs more usbc and less nonsense.
Yes most gaming devices NOT having USB-C is the actual problem.
I agree. Right now in my setup many things use USB C: my VR HMD, my keyboard, the mouse pad probably (yes, I’m a tacky RGB epic gamer, now what?), even my G502 Lightspeed has USB C and my headphones when wired mode. Imagine complaining about the presence of USB C and being a tech enthusiast.
He says because its Type C you can plug a usb hub it? Surely this is false info. You must be able to run wireless keyboard n mouse from a usb hub plugged into the second type C port? Why would you not be able to?

Because you can't see any light if there is no light coming from it. So it's not dimming it's turning it off for complete black pictures. However if you're using a glossy tv like the LG C2 you get reflection from background lights, which can be eliminated by being in a dark room. 2. For G9 the curve is not only good but essential. I wasn't a big fan of the curve of g7 as its a 16:9 panel with 1000R curve. It felt too extreme for such a small panel, however the g9 is 32:9 and a 49inch panel, with a curve it will be difficult to look around the monitor. OLED G9 has 1800R curve which is less curvy than g7s 1000R but I think I would have preferred a bit more curve as the screen is too wide. As for LG C2 its a tv so it's kinda pointless to have a curve as I sit quite a far from it. Both has their advantages. The picture definitely looks better on the C2 due to glossy panel, but then again for work related stuff or while playing games that properly utilities the super widescreen the g9 shines more. Although I will be shifting to a G8 instead of the G9 as it's too big and I need a ips monitor, my desk can't handle a 49inch and 27inch at the same time thus I came to check this video.
I’m torn between this and LG C3 42” Oled one 😔
I have it and monitor wise it's great however they could've scraped the useless smart tv function and speakers
how about you test out the OLED G9?
tftcentral has a great review (spoiler: software/OS is just as bad lol)
@@MKR3238 he didn’t
I bought it to play on my ps5. And I can't because it has no hdmi port but this piss on everyone ports.. and the mine port is like looking for a nail in the haystack to find fml
Can get a stupid deal on this. Very hesitant still as Samsung in Canada offers no extended warranty on their OLED monitors and only come with 1 year.
The port selection of this monitor if baffling. Everything else is perfect.
They should release a 4k version of this monitor
Could cost x2
@@Shineinpoverty it could also be the last monitor one would ever need.may be except for power Consumption
I'm not sure why a QD-OLED would have a low peak brightness .
It's because monitors, unlike tvs, are expected to be used for productivity and desktop applications. These have more static images, which increase the chance of burn-in. So Samsung and other monitor makers intentionally limit the brightness on oled monitors. However, that intentional limiting of brightness defeats the purpose of using an oled monitor for gaming in HDR. 🤨
@@Noneya5555Surprisingly, Samsung increased the brightness on their latest Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra which can do like 800-900 nits peak which is unheard of for an OLED tablet.
protection against burn in i guess
This monitor is now only $879. Now that is a steal?
If they made this in a 27" flat panel I would buy it.
