How to do Shadow Boxing for Beginners | Why Boxers Shadow Box

Tony Jeffries shows how to do shadow boxing for beginners. Just about every boxer out there does shadowboxing. You can do it just about anywhere, including within the comfort of your own home. The reasons why they do it include the following.
#1 it’s a great extension to warm up the specific muscles you will use in that boxing session.
#2 it’s great for fighters visualizing an opponent.
#3 Great for working on bad habits such as putting your hands down when boxing.
#4 it’s a great workout.
Shadowboxing can seem really weird for the beginners since you are literally punching the air. Lots of people wonder whether shadow boxing is good for a workout or not. Others are curious about how to do shadowboxing and whether it can be done at home. For this reason, I have put together this video that clearly explains and demonstrates, how and why you should do shadowboxing.

My name is Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist and undefeated professional boxer. I am now co-owner of Box 'N Burn, two boxing fitness gyms in Los Angeles, as well as the Box 'N Burn Academy where we train professional boxing trainers. This is why and how boxers shadowbox for boxing.
When you shadowbox, it is very important to concentrate on always having a good form. Keep your hands up high and throw punches realistically as if something is actually in front of your head. Focus on perfecting your boxing technique above everything else.
If you are a beginner, it could feel really awkward at first. However, the more you shadowbox, the easier it becomes. When shadowboxing always choose s few areas to work on such as your boxing stance, footwork, pinches, combinations and defense.
Through the video, I will demonstrate how you can shadowbox with a concentration on footwork and defense. I will also show you a punches and defense example.
Feint and attack concentration is another example of shadow boxing we will go over in this video. We will finish with a high intensity concentration example. This one will really get your heart pumping and prove to be a great workout.
As you shadowbox, start slow, get comfortable and then you can move on to high intensity shadowboxing. Practice makes perfect holds true to shadowboxing as well, so don’t quit because you couldn’t get your form right the first time.
Whether you are boxing for fighting or fitness, shadowboxing is a must-have training session. This is largely because it will surely turn you into a better boxer and helps you achieve your fitness goals.

  • I recently stopped smoking weed and for the first time ever at almost age 30 started taking workouts serious. In between reps I started shadow boxing for some reason, it just came natural. I don't know much about boxing, but I do it in a way that feels healthy for muscles and joints and feels realistic, like turning in your leg for balance and stuff. It just came to my mind, that there's probably youtube tutorials on how to properly shadow box, so I can implement it into my workout routine fully. Cheers for the tips and your great attitude lad! :)

  • Firstly i binge watch these video’s thank you for sharing your expertise Tony, quick question (won’t be the last one, sorry) whenever i shadow box or “simulate” at home i try and be realistic about what volume id actually throw and try and work on angles and i tend to do more feints and defensive moves and not just pretend id throw hundred unanswered and undefended punches, but my combo usually ends up just being jab, jab, straight and then a hook variations and then backing off and ive never been able to break out of that rhythm, any tips? And how to not just basically turn my back, in the gym while doing technical sparring (like only working the body) i seemed to be okay at engaging and disengaging but if im at home and asking someone to help me train i end up hiding away from shots and getting swarmed whilst moving backwards till i hit a surface, is this fine as in a real competetion no one would just come running toward me swinging wildly or is it just anxiety because its a personal person to me? Any help would be great thank you
