People: Linda Blair is glorifying Satan! Linda’s character: Literally suffering and in agony from being possessed by a demon
Acting out a character is not reality…. She’s not “glorifying” anything from her performance. Hell her performance has zero to do with Lucifer himself and second Lucifer and the other demons are not even the same
Wait people thought an actor portraying a possessed girl who's very clearly being tormented by a demon, and the demon clearly is a villain, is glorifying Satan? 🤦
The logic is so twisted. Like, wouldn't you yell at the director for pushing a girl to do this? Or the executives for funding it? Why go after the laborer for doing their job when there are bigger fish to fry? Don't get it, even from it's very stupid start.
@@Gutock Precisely. It's like "Ah yes, let's blame a literal child, ignoring parents and directors and all the tons of adults around. That makes sense. Must be the child's fault."

ESSENTIAL CORRECTION: After Karras jumps and is read his last rites, he does respond. His hand opens and closes a few times over the priest's hand. It's a gesture of acceptance going back hundreds of years--not everybody can speak when they're at death's door. I'm not religious but it's a beautiful moment. Karras struggles with faith the entire movie, the hand squeezing is an essential detail.
How the fuck did they miss this detail? Smfh.

Yes! ❤ well said. There should be docs about each character and person. Its a whole other world.
Any suggestions where I can get more info about it? Preferably in video form.
It’s actually insane to me it took this long for James to cover the exorcist
Yep!! But at least he's covering it now. And that's all that matters. 😎
Because it’s not a film known for its kill count…..
almost as if the exorcist isn't the most important horror movie to cover when ur show is abt the kills.
@@scott--1629 James regurlarly says that this show is about so much more than the kills. If it was just about them, Kill Counts wouldn't need to be longer than 5 minutes tops.

On the "the power of christ compells you" scene...sure, it could be a little silly how many times they repeat it, but honestly I think it's brilliant. Reagan floating off the bed is the movie's most supernatural moment yet, it's the peak of the scene's intensity, and instead of the tension snapping with either a big scare or some other flashy moment, it just holds on the two priests screaming in desperation for God to come to their aid, and then sloooowly dissipating as maybe it actually starts to work. And then Von Sydow caps it off perfectly when they get her down to the bed, quietly spitting out, "it is GOD that commands you".
I’ve always felt the same as you. The priests were trying to make sure that demon is out of her body no how many times they repeat the phrase. I always hold my breath from beginning of the levitation to when Regan softly lands on the bed.
One thing that never made sense to me is that the demon possessing Regan isn’t a Christian demon. His name is Pazuzu and he’s actually a Mesopotamian demon. Would Catholic exorcism rituals even work or would they just piss him off?
People say that nowadays everyone is soft and easily offended but in the 70s that girl FAINTED because of a spinal tap.
I gotta say James is absolutely slaying in that priest outfit
More like Slaying DEMONS 😎

He’s not slaying he’s exorcising

It’s funny how The Exorcist franchise only has two good movies and it’s the two that had the involvement of William Blatty. How and why we’ve been “gifted” two legacy prequels and two legacy sequels is a constant mystery to me, especially since only one of them dares to rise above being middling. Stay strong Exorcist III defenders.
"Exorcist II" does have some "so bad it's good" appeal to it, especially on how it pretty much got everything wrong. It's hard not to get a laugh at, say, James Earl Jones in a bug costume or Richard Burton being visibly drunk throughout the film.
The TV series which got two seasons is apparently pretty good.
@adamcammack3534 It was. The frustrating thing is season 2 ended on a cliffhanger and it was fecking cancelled.
@@mst3KGfI think that one should be watched for how bad it is. Plus we got an iconic interview with Friedman about attending the premiere and he never minced words if you knew his personality in various interviews

Fun Facts: 1.) Father Karras’s actor, Jason Miller, was the father of Jason Patric, who played Michael in the Lost Boys. 2.) Paul Newman was interested in the role of Father Karras, which is most likely why he was name dropped.
The same Paul Newman who created Cars?

WoW. I had no idea that Father Karras (Jason Miller) is Jason Patric's father. That is a fun fact! The Exorcist and The Lost Boys are some of my favorite movies. So it's strange that I did not know that tidbit before now. However, I'm very happy to have been informed that they are father and son. Very cool to know. Thank you.
Jason patric is also the grandson of Jackie Gleason from the tv series the honeymooners and the film the hustler starring paul Newman
If they're father and son why don't they have the same last names
First off, James looks amazing in that priest outfit. Second, I'm so glad he's finally covering this. It's one of the greatest and most legitimately horrifying films ever. The effects are incredible, and Linda Blair and Max von Sydow had amazing performances.
His outfit cracked me up!

"now who's a stereotype of the clerigy" Damn James didn't need to go that hard on him but I'm glad he did.
He said the simple truth Hal.
I think James’ take on this movie is completely valid. I completely thought I wasn’t watching the right movie when I watched it for the first time based solely on the pacing. The movie has amazing aspects about it, but I just see it as a movie you could put on in the background. I often found myself reaching for my phone throughout the movie. So you’re definitely not alone James! 🖤🖤
yeah honestly i bet most people wouldnt be able to tell someone about the first half of the movie if asked most of what this movie is remembered and is famous for happens in the second half
@@zombieslayer2016 Yeah this really is what I mean. Like I watched it back in October, I’ve already forgotten the whole plot of the first half and only remember the more “scary” scenes.

The spider walk is absolutely necessary, and I would argue one of the most iconic shots in the entire movie. The first time I watched a version of this movie that DIDN'T have the spider walk it was so jarring that I almost had to stop the movie.
Same for me. I oringally watched a version of this movie without it when I was like 6. Watching it for a second time as a grown man with the spider walk sacred the crap out of me.
Thanks for say it

I definitely recommend The Version You've Never Seen over the theatrical. Not only is the spider walk great, but they added a bunch of flashing Pazuzu faces randomly throughout the movie, which I think is an amazing touch.
I mean, I've seen MERCHANDISE of that scene.
8:30 James: "But seriously, how did this get made?!" - sleep away camp quote
For as cursed as this production was and as many questionable or awful things happened because of people not caring about safety or health, the one thing I appreciate is that Father Karras visits the house with the intent to be a psychiatrist first. No joke, there's such a stereotype that exorcists just show up on command whenever someone starts behaving differently and "exorcise the demon" regardless of whatever's happening. There's a huge amount of disproving the standard stuff like psychological or psychiatric issues, various types of abuse, drug use, undisclosed connections or influences, etc. Exorcism is literally reserved for when nothing else could possibly be used to explain whatever's happening, and it's the one thing I'll actually give various churches as a point of praise without complicating matters. Granted, not every sect does the same level of scrutiny, but for those who do, it's nice to see that they're not being totally zealous with calling everything demonic possession.
From what ive seen, even in more scrupulous churches, it seems to come down to "we dont know what it is, so it must be demons" which can very easily cause people to not get the help they need. Id much rather they actually prove demons exist TBH.
I will always remember the parodies of this film. Such as the Boondocks one with Uncle Ruckus at his most offensive but also hilarious.

The symbolism of Father Damien Karras looking like he's rising up has always stuck with me. Also, the cross from the hospital where Roland Doe went through his exorcism (the novel and film's inspiration) is now on display at a museum in KS City.
Which scene is that? (Father Karras rising up)
Where he walks up hills or stairs. That kind of symbolism.

🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️ same here
It's nice and I respect it but both of you are very wrong lol
As someone who watched it for the first time recently, imo I totally understand its impact on the horror genre, but it’s nothing special by today’s standards. That spinal tap scene tho? Woof, I had to skip it.
I feel the same way about it. The only other Exorcist film I've seen is III, which I REALLY enjoyed. Stylistically and tonally it is definitely not for everyone, but George C Scott and Brad Dourif are on another level and the scares are just as effective as the original, except they haven't been memed to death in pop culture so they actually still hit
Linda Blair and her stunt double could've been replaced by a mannequin or something for the scene that damaged their backs. Even seeing it in motion before either of them was in it should've had people grabbing their backs in pain. I'm not even joking when I say that.
Yeah, how many of the mysterious injuries on set were just carelessness?
@elenachristian9860 I imagine alot
@@elenachristian9860probably most if not all. The fire that destroyed one of the sets was probably done for publicity.
This, The Shining, and the Evil Dead remake are the only movies that still spook me every time I watch them. Which by the way its his video and if choose to do that more power to him.
Evil dead remake is one of my favorite horror movies it’s so goated
Repossessed (1990) should definitely get some love from James. It’s not only a parody of the possession genre but (in a way) can be seen as an unofficial sequel to The Exorcist. It even has Linda Blair cast as one of the leads.
I rewatched this week specifically for this Count, and hearing that the things that irk me about this movie also annoy other people is kind of a relief. Say anything negative about this movie in horror spaces, and you ruffle a LOT of feathers. Thanks for your honesty, James! Love you for it!
I feel the same!
It's so weird, because I think the majority of horror fans would have at least one beloved horror movie that just doesn't appeal to them. I mean I love The Exorcist, but I can also see how other people wouldn't - just like I can't enjoy The Blair Witch Project or The Lost Boys as much as most people.
It still remains my favourite horror because of its stone cold classic status and quality performances, but even I can agree that James's issues with the film are completely reasonable and acceptable - nothing is perfect! :)

Fun facts about Pazuzu. Number one he was actually a protective deity of his worshipers and also a protector of pregnant women and newborn children and was also called apon to scare off other demons and evil spirits. Number two he was not just a "demon" he was also a primordial deity of the wind (especially the southern wind) who ruled over other wind spirits. he was also seen as a bringer of plague due to his control over wind and associations with underworld. So yeah he might be a demonic chaos goblin but he's a pretty cool dude when you respect him 😂❤

William Peter Blatty made a novel/film called The Ninth Configuration about the character at 09:35. It's brilliant. He's an astronaut & as she pees on the rug she says "you're going to die up there." He went crazy upon launch and ended up in a mental hospital. The Ninth Configuration is about him there, played by Walking Dead/The Rise of Leslie Vernon's Scott Wilson. He's amazing in it. One of the most peculiar films ever made.
It’s one of the most unique spin-offs, that’s for sure. Absolutely nothing supernatural happens until literally right before the end credits.
I've only read the novel, personally, and seen bits and pieces of the movie, but it is indeed quite a read. I didn't know it was connected to The Exorcist, but hearing that makes some sense now. Highly recommend picking up the book.

Interestingly, I realized this year that the 2 times I’ve seen this movie I accidentally watched the directors cut, and I’ve always considered the spider walk to be the best scare in the film. didn’t realize until a few months ago that it wasn’t in the theatrical cut.
10:25 Absolutely agree. I had my wisdom teeth removed earlier this year. When I saw this scene, my legs were kicking like crazy. Also doesn't help that a murderer (and suspected serial killer) is in this scene. I also think Golden Chainsaw sould have gone to Father Marrren. It's a haunting reveal seeing him and heartbreaking seeing Karras trying to revive the dead man. It also motivated him enough to sacrifice him (for the most part, wait till Exorcist 3).
I just saw this movie for the first time a couple years ago, and when it was over, I was sad, because I knew I’d never be able to see it for the first time ever again. I can only imagine how incredible and horrifying it would’ve been to see this in theaters when it came out. One of the greatest movies to ever release imo.
just wait for when you’re old and have severe dementia then you can watch for the first time as many times as you like!
As someone in the field of archaeology the opening scene is fucking amazing! It’s easily one of the best depictions of what we do and I have so much respect for that opening scene.
The nod to We Hate Movies' Halloween intro at 17:25 is a nice touch!
Fun fact about Pazuzu, he’s a real deity from ancient Mesopotamia. Lord of the southwestern wind who holds kingship over all wind demons. Funnily enough, he’s so terrifying that other demons are actually scared of him, so people would hold onto statues of him to, ironically, _keep demons away._ Also, as chaotic and dangerous as he is, he also protects pregnant women.
While I wouldn't call it the scariest film I've ever seen, I adore the techniques, story and the acting, to say nothing of the controversies it created, be them during or after production. Without doubt, one of the most influential horror films ever made. I'll even agree with Friedkin in that the earlier hospital scenes with Regan getting X-rayed are more horrific than the exorcism itself.
The parody of this at the start of Scary Movie 2 was my introduction to this film. This feels like the kind of film that can't quite live up to the high praise and expectations that folks have when they watch it for the first time.
I think one thing is that it's been parodied and referenced so often that it's hard to remember what it would have been like to watch this when it first came out, when the popular image of exorcism was far, far less widespread, so the final confrontation between the priests and the demon would have been far more unsettling and alien. It also ties into the culture of the time--fear about the decline of tradition and the youth becoming stranger and more incomprehensible.
TBF James, Bohemian Rhapsody was also nominated for Best Editing, so i think you're safe to dismiss the academy on that category.
Many of the iconic props, including the spinning head dummy, reside in the Museum of the Moving Image in New York.
Getting the Production Tales From Hell and then soon after the Kill Count for a movie is pretty sweet. Really feels like synergy and is extra informative and fun
Fun fact my dad actually lived down the street from the guy who did the make up effects for this movie and actually saw him selling some of the leftover props at a yard sale a little after the movie was complete. He sadly didn't buy any props though, though he mostly said it was bits of makeup, though I think he did mention a head prop was also there.
2024 has been one of the best years of Dead Meat so far! Keep up the good work!
What makes the movie so good is that it's just as heartbreaking as it is scary, if not more so. Seeing Chris MacNiel go through what she does is genuinely sad to watch. It's so easy to connect with her struggles, and it makes the horror super effective. Damien is also a character that kind of makes you sad to watch. His mom has died and he's losing his faith. It's really engaging following his story and seeing him face the unbelievable head on. It's a perfect movie imo.
Despite being over 50 years old, the practical effects are still mindblowing and only matched by the storytelling.
Random demon: "Captain Howdy?" That's the best alias you could come up with?" Pazuzu: I needed something that could fool a 13-year-old girl, okay? Sue me.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
In Blatty's novel, Chris infers that the name "Captain Howdy" sounds similar to "Howard" - Regan's biological dad is Howard Macneil whom Chris divorced. Thus, Chris suspected that Regan's relationship with "Captain Howdy" is Regan coping with her loneliness apart from her father.
I am now headcanonning that the "random demon" is Gozer from Ghostbusters

It was really cool to walk on a piece of horror history every day tho!
Dead Meat covering horror films nominated for Best Picture is a huge accomplishment. The team did an excellent work on this video.
One thing I love about James is that when he critiques or gives an opinion, he makes sure to tell you that it’s his opinion and it should not be used as the standard for rating the movies. I honestly love it❤
I've been watching the entire backlog since I discovered this channel not long ago and never have I been jump scared and yelled HOLY CRAP like I did at the opening of this.
You should add this to the Horror Movie Classics playlist.
more than 50 years later and the line "what a lovely day for an exorcsim" still makes me laugh
*exorcism
I watched this movie for the first time when I heard this was the next kill count, now it’s one of my of my favorite movies, thank you James for this recommendation and The Thing
18:25 “There’s a shot of [Jason Miller] sitting on the couch that’s just… how I feel most of the time.” -Jay Baumam, in Red Letter Media’s Re:View episode on The Exorcist. I feel ya, dude
The Nixon comment 🤣🤣💀🤣 thanks for that James. The cinematography is some of my favorite ive ever seen in this film. I can definitely agree, it's a slow, slow burn but beautifully executed.
19:00 - people want to exorcise their cats? 😂 Now that's one hell of a horror movie!
James: 25:24 to 25:27 Genie from Aladdin: Be thankful you haven't been trapped in a bottle for 10,000 years.
I was looking for this comment
thats what i was thinking about hahahaha
9:52 - Nice TMBG reference, my man. I love to see/hear them still being shared!
I’ve been looking forward to this for YEARS
Here’s a weird little story of how I came to know about The Exorcist: I never actually seen the movie itself, but my first introduction was the car driving through hills jumpscare (I was like 12 and didn’t know who the character was), followed by the one specific scene in Son of the Mask where Tim is looking at Alvey through the rear view mirror and Alvey spins his head 360 degrees then projectile vomits (seen it multiple times throughout my childhood, had no idea it was an Exorcist easter egg), and I finally found out about correlation between the creepy faced little girl and The Exorcist from SrPelo’s Ooga Booga jumpscare. And now I’m about to come as close to watching the movie as I ever will with this kill count, so now I won’t have to remain clueless as to what this movie is even about and why it’s so popular.
added bonus of watching kill counts early: sometimes youtube decides to get them taken down for whatever reason . If you’re here early you get to see the OG VID!!!
Loved today's ad read. Not over done and just short and simple.
Wasn’t expecting James to cover The Exorcist! What an awesome surprise! His videos simply get better and better! You’re a legend James! 🖤👊
My little sister watched this movie once when she was in elementary school. A real horror movie fanatic, that one. And because of her watching it, I was woken up three times the following night due to her bad dreams.
25:25 love the Aladdin genie reference! 😂
I lived in the DC area for many years and used to drive past those damn steps all the time, never without remembering that scene. The one and only time I actually walked on them, I slipped. I caught myself before I fell but boy did I feel for Father Karras in that moment.
I have a similar issue with The Exorcist and popular movies like The Shining. These movies were released long before I was born and have significantly impacted pop culture. When I finally watched The Exorcist, I was already familiar with many iconic scenes from references in other films and TV shows. As a result, even though the movie was good, I couldn't help but feel like I was waiting to get to those iconic scenes.
I do like how you split the channel into 2 so that some of us who are into the Kill Counts can look forward to see more Kill Counts from you
I’ve never been this early! I’ve been on a Kill Count binge and this couldn’t have come at the better time!
omds me too🤣
9am est Kill Counts always hit different lol
