  • Started with the Blackshark, it didn't suck me in, neither did the Huey to be honest. It wasn't until a friend and I started flying the SU25T that DCS really showed me what it could be. Being able to help the team in multiplayer (SEAD )really worked for me. This lead me to going back to the Huey for building SAM sites (sling loading is not easy). Plus learning to fly it was a joy. When I got my first compliment on how stable my hover was, I was simply overjoyed lol. Highly recommend buying all helicopters if you can, figure out what will keep you interested, and then practice with one. Much fun!

  • For me its the Hip. My country (Hungary) used it for many decades, I dare to say, she's as iconic here as the Huey in the western world. A huge heli. Plenty of switches to click. Love the 6 pylons, weapons and the gunners. Quite hard to fly, but very fun to learn it.

    @derimik15@derimik158 ай бұрын
  • You'd be surprised at how dynamic you can get in the Hip, especially with it loaded light. Power for days and you don't have to worry about negative Gs nearly as much as you do with the Huey. Plus that autopilot makes it feel rock solid once you get it dialed in and trimmed where you want it.

  • The KA-50 is the sniper of the helis, great when you know where the enemy are. Gazelle is agile and can stop on a dime, so great when you suddenly being shot at and need to stop and hide fast, the auto-hover keeps it dead steady. The KA-50's auto-hover tends to drift and needs some trimming to keep it in place, not so good when you are close to trees and buildings.

  • I'd love to have them make a chinook and add some of the missions we see it doing in videos. Mountain top deployment with the ass on the ground and the shoulders flying level. Boat Pickup, where the chopper hovers a quarter in the water so the boat can enter the chopper on it's own power. Mass troop deployment, or small vehicle deployments. Large supply drops. I don't know why, but these sorts of missions where some skill is needed to make them happen appeal to me. More so if they were to have a means of making them, "make a difference" in some form on online campaign the multiplayer servers runs. Looking forward to the Apache and Kiowa. The last Kiowa video made it look good, like it flies very well. Also looking forward to the future Cobra coming out, can't wait to hear what versions ED has in mind to make.

  • From my own experience, the Gazelle is the best to teach you flying helicopters in DCS. It’s flight model is just tricky enough that it will help you learn how to fly without it being to frustrating with it’s forgiving flight model. While every helicopter is different, it’s helped me a lot in flying the Apache, Hind, etc.

  • Quite a good and informative video. I have most of these helo's, although I don't have more than about 30 hours in each (haven't flown KA50 though). I do play this game on our clans server with a couple of clanmates. I haven't flown a real helicopter, so won't comment too much on the flight model. I really love the Mi8 when I'm flying solo, still have to get around to trying to slingload stuff (I have the oilfield campaign). Still, playing multiplayer in it, I like flying around in it. Its good having so many rockets allowing you to blanket any enemy convoys to "supress" them. The Huey is quite a nice aircraft, and its multicrew capability is great and a lot of fun, although the multi crew still needs a some work (mainly syncing the weapons control between the pilot and copilot, but its only on a few items unlike the Gazelle). The guns are fun to play with, and give the other crew members something to do whilst the pilot flies the aircraft. The Gazelle however, its ok to fly solo, but when you want to use this in multicrew, expect lots of bugs, panel lights wont work sometimes, even though they should and the system actually is in the correct mode (and will fire correctly), sometimes the camera won't track correctly until you move your stick again, and this isn't obvious (the "gunner" will have an image that looks fine, but the "pilot" will see the drift, and so when the gunner fires and misses, its annoying). In multicrew it can be an absolute exercise in frustration and I hope this isn't replicated with their KW as i'm looking forward to that (my clan mate can't wait for the Apache though)

  • Biggest problem with the huey is that you take some damage and then the main rotor just goes walkabout without warning. I mean I know the jesus pin was a thing back in vietnam, but it wasnt like they took some small arms fire maybe had some systems fail requiring a RTB just to have the main rotor take a solo flight to the moon. I will be buying the AH-64 and OH-58 to go along with my Hind purchase for 2020. First thing I have bought for DCS since F-14 years ago. And so glad they are getting back to their rotorroots.

  • Depends if you're a noob to hardcore flight sims, or if you're well into this kind of sim already. If you're a noob, like me, then I suggest going with the Huey. You can't go wrong. It's such an incredible helicopter, and you can really throw it around without it falling out of the sky. It takes quite a bit of hammer from enemy fire as well, and of course it's one of the most iconic copters of all time. Stick on flight of the valkyries full blast, and strafe some Charlie positions with either side-mounted miniguns and rocket pods, or with a door gunner on an M-60 to get that "full apocalypse metal jacket now" feeling. Awesome. If you're a seasoned simmer (not like me, I'm totally shit at these things, and have a very low-budget flight stick to boot), then go with something like the MI-8 or the truly truly amazing gunship, the KA-50 black shark. Black shark (and then black shark 2) was the very first hardcore flight sim I ever bought. And I still suck at it. But I also still love it. It's an amazing looking helo, and it's just so good at blowing shit up, that you can't help but have fun when you're in it. It also has a fairly decent campaign with the base game, that gives a nice introduction where you follow your leader (feels like the devs teasing you though, since he's flying a fucking Hind, and you can't fly those yourself in the game) around the whole mission area map. Takes a good while to fly the whole route, you have to stick close to your leader, and it gives you a great chance to get used to the helo, and tweak your settings and controls to your liking.

  • Very good summary and a very good attitude to have towards which one to pick up. Personally I gravitate towards a mixture of gunship and scouting roles, but after spending some time watching tutorials on the Ka-50 I decided I wasn't going to like it so went for the scout instead. I picked up the Huey first after hearing the negative press about the Gazelle, but eventually tried it out and honestly I found actually just flying the Gazelle much, much more enjoyable. You can really put it through its' paces while the Huey is much more sedate. Although especially now with multicrew the Huey is pretty amazing too, if a lot less capable in an environment with any real surface to air threats. I'm really looking forwards to the Kiowa for a bird that can buddy lase while having more teeth than the Gazelle, which isn't very flexible in what you can engage if you don't know what you're up against (but both the M and L are very fun to employ in the right conditions) and hoping the apache is user friendly enough for me to employ properly because the idea of being able to blow away an entire convoy with tanks and integrated AAA excites me a lot.

  • Good video. It should only be noted that those who decide to buy a DCS helicopter module will initially find it quite difficult to tame these aircraft, until they master the skill of control and cope with the logic of the autopilot. And one more thing, ED has an awkward habit of charging you for one aircraft multiple times. It happened to me, and many others, with the Black Shark for v. 1.0, then I paid extra for the upgrade from v. 1.0 to v. 2 and in the end I had to buy v. 2. The second time here is happening with the Warthog A-10C. And if you want to take an upgraded version of the A-10C II Tank killer, you will have to pay extra. Or buy the same plane again. So don't be surprised when they do it again with the AH-64 or the Mi-24. I expect this to happen with both the F-16 and the F-18 in the next year or two.

  • Casmo I have a helo piloting question: do you need to use tail rotor input in level flight to keep on course (Huey)??? I kind of thought the tail in the wind with speed would keep it straight. Great vid as always!

    @thebiggestoneyouveverhad@thebiggestoneyouveverhad3 жыл бұрын
    • Not “on course” but in trim. You may be crabbing into the wind and based on the winds and your power applied you will apply pedals to keep the aircraft in trim. Maybe I need to make a video...

      @CasmoTV@CasmoTV3 жыл бұрын
    • @@CasmoTV that would be awesome! Thanks!

      @thebiggestoneyouveverhad@thebiggestoneyouveverhad3 жыл бұрын
    • @@thebiggestoneyouveverhadHelicopters, like the Huey, as Casmo said, are usually flown in trim, meaning , the helicopter may be crabbed a bit into the wind and rolled as well to help maintain a straight course(do not confuse course and heading (heading is the direction your nose is pointing, course is your direction of travel across the ground e.g. your nose can be at 054 heading while maintaining a course of 035 across the ground)) and to maintain course you may have to crab or roll the aircraft to keep it moving in the right direction. If you are trying to maintain a given heading, then this can require a bit of leg work with the anti-torque pedals especially if the wind is high and is rear quartering. The Huey loses a lot of tail rotor effectiveness at higher speeds, which is why the vertical stabilizer is actually an airfoil. After about 60kia the lateral lift produced by this airfoil is actually enough to counteract the torque of the main rotor. This is actually something that one of the emergency procedures for loss of tail rotor is dependent on to do a run-on landing. The high forward speed produces enough lift on the vertical stabilizer to counteract the torque of the main rotor system but you have to keep that speed up all the way to landing or you'll lose control. This loss of tail rotor effectiveness, and as a way to protect the tail rotor, is what has given rise to the fenestron found on the Gazelle and other SA/AS and Airbus helicopters, it also led to the advent of the NOTAR system from MD Helicopters. These designs increased speed and increased safety by making the tail rotor less prone to damage though also become less effective with higher speeds which is why the Ka-50 has an actual rudder for better yaw authority at high speed. FUN FACT: The blades on the Gazelle's fenstron tail rotor are not space evenly around the hub.

  • I think the advice to choose the mission, not the platform, is a good one, but perhaps not for beginners. There is a difference between flying an aircraft and fighting an aircraft, and you can't fight effectively if you can't fly the bloody thing in the first place. First, I think it is important that we agree that helicopters are abobinations and a crime against nature. Somewhere, somebody figured there weren't enough ways to get killed with fixed-wing machines, so they came up with the helicopter, which added about a dozen more ways to buy the farm. A few of these are modeled in DCS, including the much-beloved vortex ring state and if you don't know what that is yet, you will learn. My humble advice is to start with the Huey. Basic chopper, basic missions. Fun to fly. Dang, it's a Huey, how can you have a helo in your hangar and no Huey? There are a few decent campaigns too. Then the Mi 8. Bigger, heavier, more complex but a workhorse. Do the oil field campaign; no shooting, but you will master the flying part. Then get into the shooting business. After that, while I haven't flown the others, you'll be able to concentrate on just learning a few individual machine peculiarities and systems and be on your way. Hopefully you have a good joystick. You cannot fly a helo without good rudder control, period. Twist stick don't really cut it. You cannot fly a helo without good collective control (i.e. you can see this as the throttle). What I did, after trying many things: I have a HOTAS Warthog. It has 2 throttle. So I set up the controls that one is the collective and the other the rudder (I have no rudder pedals). It works very well and give me that fine control you need for the both axis. You'll need this because a helo transiting into ground effect abruptly changes fying characteristics in many annoying ways, yet another wonderful way to get killed. Set up your trim button. The trim is your friend. You must master the trim. You must respect the trim. You must use the trim. You must think of the trim. The trim is life. The trim is control. Neglecting the trim is another way to get killed.

If you crash because it dosent do what you want, you are flying it wrong. You do not fly it like you want to, you fly it the way the Huey wants you to. • Hey Cosmo, are you going to assist DCS with Apache SME? They've advertised for help.

    @shd4618@shd46183 жыл бұрын
    • Nope. As I said in my reaction video I really didn’t spend much time in the delta model so I don’t think I would be much help. If they asked me to regardless sure I’d think about it but there are people with much more experience in that particular airframe that should do it. Put another way I feel like I would compromise my integrity to volunteer and make myself out to be something I’m not. We have that too much in this community...

  • True Russian fashion the buttons are all over the place. No truer words have been spoken. Just did the two week trial of the Hind, need I say more? American version of a aircraft. You flip this switch to make the aircraft do something. Russian version you hit this switch and then have to hit a couple more to do the same thing, plus they are all in different locations. There was no Left to Right or making a U of the cockpit. I wonder if their newer aircraft are still as bad.

  • I don't know if anyone here can help but I just reinstalled and the sim appears to be locked to 60fps, it goes up if I look at the sky but I am not getting what I think I should be with my set up, it seems to hover around 40fps most of the time, which it shouldn't be. I've checked all the usual places for a fix but nothing so far, here's hoping! (Ryzen 5800X, 32GB RAM, RTX 3060, Windows 10)

    @manic_miner@manic_miner2 жыл бұрын
    • You didn't mention the resolution you are running the sim in, if you are on a 2D monitor or if you are using a HMD or multiple screens. If you are using a HMD, it also matters what resolution you are playing at in the HMD. I only run at 3840X2160p if I'm in 2D. Your performance sounds about right for 1440p with a 3060 card. My performance was just like yours with my RTX 2070 Super, 40fps. Even my RTX 3080 sometimes struggles at 4K on the deck. Maybe turn down MSAA, shadows, grass detail, forest detail, ground textures, visual range & mirror's. This is a very demanding sim for me, probably because I have no experience below 3840x2160p and a HTC Vive Pro HMD. I couldn't even run this (how I wanted to) with a 3070 at 60fps, so I went for a 3080 and now it's fine in 4K at approximately 60fps if I turn down MSAA to 2X, but I still have trouble getting below 8/10ms latency in my Vive Pro, to get a consistent 90fps. I have an i9-9900K with 32 Gig of Ram as well. I'm not sure that's even enough Ram for a 2D single monitor 4K display, as some modern maps like Syria and Persian Gulf with all the high number of buildings on these maps eats all my Ram in the city's. My PC uses much less Ram in VR. One thing about the 30 series of GPU's that not a lot of people know about is that the video ram overheats to 90 degrees Celsius. Whilst your core GPU chip heat will be displaying a safe 70c under 100% load. This could just be the Founders Edition cards though. I make sure to turn my fan up to 100% when the GPU die chip reaches 60c Celsius in my MSI Afterburner gaming profile. This sim performed much better for me after I installed it to a NVMe M.2 SSD, inserted straight into the motherboard. I think (as in today) it still only uses two CPU cores as well.

  • Helicopters are fun on DCS BUT... the ground aspect that needs to go with helos it's just not there yet. AI ground units are just too bad and it ruins the immersion completely for me. You blow up a truck with 20 soldiers standing nearby and 5 die in the explosion, the others just sit there like nothing happened.... or there's 4 armored vehicles and you blow one up, the other 3 drive 20 feet away then just sit there like they safe. When you are flying planes you're actually going around so you don't notice this as much but on a helo you are usually close by and you can see the stupid AI in first hand. It's a game breaker IMO.
