Enough to turn the tide? Ukraine hails release of long-delayed US military aid • FRANCE 24 English

Will it be enough to dissipate doubt over Ukraine's ability to hold out in a war of attrition with Russia? After months of delay, the US House of Representatives has finally approved a $60 billion military aid package for Kyiv. Overruling the objections of Republican hardliners, Speaker Mike Johnson praised lawmakers who came together to "answer history's call". That said, he also conferred first with Donald Trump.

That might be shortened if some agreement can be made within the Senate but if not the final vote will probably be Thursday. The Atacms missiles are mandated in the House bill so they will be coming (about 1/2 of the stock pile is reaching their expiration date, so give them away or pay someone to destroy them - a no brainer to just flush them to Ukraine to use up)

  • Une guerre comme celle-ci coûte €1 milliard par semaine. Cette aide US couvrira donc â peu près un an. C'est une année dont l'Europe doit impérativement profiter pour acquérir les moyens de sa défense stratégique autonome, en ce compris celle de l'Ukraine et enfin indépendante des États-Unis.

    @user-ue2tv5rd9e@user-ue2tv5rd9e24 күн бұрын
    • I don't think Europe is ready to be independent of the US, certainly not in one year, but Europe should be able to match the US, dollar per dollar, in aid going forward. It is your continent after all.

    • Hi @@tayler2396-- Thank you for your response. Europe on the whole (so UK, Norway and Switzerland included) spends about €350b per year on defense, thus about half the US. So the wherewithal is there. What's missing is the willingness to sacrifice some sacred cows and a cohesive strategy. We'll see if necessity will bring forth some invention. I think it can and hope it will. I agree it will be a challenge.

    • @@user-ue2tv5rd9e I hope it will work out for Europe. I wonder if there should not be a global security pact to eventually replace NATO, something with minimum standards for democracy, such as having free elections and certain human rights guarantees. Such a pact would include most NATO members, but also Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, etc. Funding might be based on a graduated income system, with low income countries obligated to a lesser percentage and higher income countries investing a higher percentage.

      @tayler2396@tayler239624 күн бұрын
    • @@tayler2396 interesting concept although us American's are in debt for over 100k dollars per man, woman and child already while European Union citizens are only in around 33k in debt for every man, woman and child. I think your concept would work but we need to be given a substantial amount of time away from our graduated income obligations in the U.S. so we can fix our own mess. We've been Europe's private bodyguard for decades upon decades. It's time for them to pay that back in some way.

  • This aid package is a noble lifeline of essential importance, but keeping the Ukraine in the fight is not good enough. Prolonging the war long term is not the right strategy, what is necessary is to shorten it by winning, and that can only be done with NATO involvement in the Ukraine. Not in Russia. Perhaps, if enough, even only in a defensive capacity, shielding the Ukraine from all of Russia’s attacks,so as to allow the Ukrainian army to concentrate all its forces on the front.

  • Ukraine's biggest problem is manpower. Across the battlefield, Ukraine does not have enough soldiers. Therefore, this 60 billion dollars in military support will only prolong the defeat with many more Ukrainians dying, perhaps 100,000. The longer the conflict goes on, Ukraine will lose more and more land, perhaps all the way to the Dnieper River. In addition, the Russian peace terms will become increasingly harsh the longer the conflict is allowed to continue.

  • In 2014, people in Ukraine were forced to fight against each other. At first, they loaded shells without fuses and wrote on the shells - “this is all we can do.”

  • “Actions are needed. Words matter but Actions are needed in order to save Ukraine, and actually in order to save an entire civilization, mainly the Western civilization; the Free World. We have to frame this war [Russia-Ukraine war] in that context. This war is Not just a war between Ukraine and Russia. This is the war that criminal Putin waged against Nato; the Western civilization, and actually against Humanity.” - Arseniy Yatsenyuk, former PM of Ukraine

  • Polls: In the US war of Independence 1/3 were royalists, 1/3 could care less, 1/3 were patriots. Britain was a super power, US was a bunch of farmers and shopkeepers. Ukraine is in great shape.

  • I am not a military strategist or geopolitical whiz kid or from any governmental agency. I am an artist and I have never served in the military and we live 2,000 kilometers from Kiev. This debate has been excellent and informative and what I take home after listening to you and many other specialists and experts in the field is that I believe we are not realizing that more than 2 years and 58 days have passed where innocent people as well as combatants on both sides of the conflict are getting killed every day and the time has come to ask ourselves this question: What in the world are we waiting for? President Putin lives in his head and his vision of the world has all of us under his thumb. Let's be real: Putin's head is deteriorating by the day, but someone else just as determined as him is waiting in the wings. The Russians will only stop by us in the west uniting and, yes, risking a limited nuclear exchange. Boys and girls, it's coming no matter what happens and I think we all know this. So; what am I saying here? We must take the initiative and call his bluff and openly declare that if he does not stop operations by 6 June, 2024 for example, that all western governments will send so many troops to Russian front lines that the Russians will be surrendering in droves or getting eliminated in battle by tens of thousands of western military fighters. We can and must stop this madness because it is a cancer in the human community only growing and multiplying by the day. We must cut out this cancer called Putin and call his bluff or pay the consequences of what more time is going to bring to the Russian side: more weapons of death and destruction to be rained down on the Ukrainian people sleeping in their beds. This war is evil in HD 3D for Ukraine.

  • The inappropriate behavior of the lady in pink is quite disturbing. The war and the death of Alexey Navalny, hardly are appropriate reasons for laughing and giggling. Plus, Macron is very far from suggesting, sending french soldiers to Ukrainian front lines. She talks about it as if it’s a done deal already.
