Hustler Drive belt keeps coming off. Poor frame design? Miller 211 to the rescue...again!

In this video, I show a customer's mower that had some unexpected repairs needed. The customer said the drive / traction belt would keep getting thrown off after just a few minutes of driving.
I expected a common cause like a bad tensioner pulley, tensioner arm problem or something caught up in one of the pulleys.
As I was inspecting the unit I discovered the frame was broken in two places and had a bent mounting bracket.
The broken frame mounts were allowing the transmission to move up and down which caused a misalignment of the belt pulley which then was causing the belt to come off.
Many mechanics do not know how to weld but welding is an extremely useful skill to have.
This repair is a perfect example of how knowing how to weld can save you money and make you money.
My favorite welder of all time is my Miller 211 with MVP (multi voltage plug). This welder has been the best investment ever!

    • I bought a Miller 211 back in 2010. Best money I ever spent! It was such a good welder I bought a 2nd 211 and both were used daily all day for over 8 years. No issues. Recently the 1st one's board stop activating the gas solenoid when on 240v. Still works fine on 120v. I bought a 215 while the 211 was getting diagnosed. Even if the first 211 had blown up years ago I'd still be impressed with the amount of hell I put it through.

  • This damage is not from striking something, if it was you would see twisting and bending. This problem is from fatigue and a poor design. The bent plate from the transaxle to the frame was bent from the tabs being broken.

    • Good point. Plus, this is a residential mower being used daily for commercial use.
