Last September a family of three decided to spend the better part of a week in my city yard! We had a LOT of urban bears last year! The consequences of drought, so a shortage of food in the forest resulted! The conservation officers could not keep up with complaints! We also have urban moose, deer, foxes, wolves and coyotes. And the occasional cougar and lynx!

There was a nocturnal pathway between our house and the neighbor's. My dachshund would exercise his amazing nose every morning by checking the scents. A couple times he found what I think was raccoon poo. 4 baths before I could stand him without retching. The fresh pile was even worse. It had dried onto his fur. He was so disappointed when I scrubbed his new perfume out of his longhaired hide. I have a strong stomach but the stench was almost too much for me. Even so, I loved our forest neighborhood. More worried about non-human predators than the human variety on evening strolls. Out on the deck in the dark at 2am on a hot summer night. The first call got my attention (and Buddy's) coming from the trees about 40 ft away. The second had me on my feet, grabbing my dog and going inside. I don't know what it was but it wasn't a night bird. The deck was on the side of the house where the critters passed by in the night. All I know is that it took something with a big, deep chest to let out a snarl/screech/growl or whatever it was with such depth and volume. I was the interloper. Bud very willing to go inside, never made a sound, unwilling to challenge for once in his life. One more instance of the wisdom of this awesomely intelligent pooch who chose my porch when some idiot dumped his sweet puppy self. Their trash my treasure. Longhaired dachshund. Charming and affectionate. Stubborn and headstrong. Can pick a sketchy person out of a group of people in a heartbeat. If Bud doesn't like you, you don't get hired. His opinion is a valued tool.

Bird feeders? Garbage sitting by the street? Bears are either looking for food or love, not much else. Or maybe he changed course from your sidewalk to your back porch because he was curious as to what was back there. We have several bears in our neighborhood here in Orange City. I think it's great but most older people are terrified. Remember the "Gentle Ben" TV show with Dennis Weaver? I don't remember where in Florida the show was supposed to be. 22 million people here in Florida and we still have a lot of bears and other interesting creatures.
