War is hell, but war is also a brutal teacher. War teaches you about brotherhood, honor, humility, and leadership. In this riveting talk, Jocko Willink explains from personal experience how war teaches you the most when things go wrong. Jocko asserts that when a team takes ownership of its problems, the problems get solved.
JOCKO WILLINK is a decorated retired Navy SEAL officer, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling book Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win, host of the top-rated Jocko Podcast, and co-founder of Echelon Front, where he is a leadership instructor, speaker, and executive coach. Jocko spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy SEAL Teams, starting as an enlisted SEAL and rising through the ranks to become a SEAL officer. As commander of SEAL Team Three’s Task Unit Bruiser during the battle of Ramadi, he orchestrated SEAL operations that helped the “Ready First” Brigade of the US Army’s First Armored Division bring stability to the violent, war-torn city. Task Unit Bruiser became the most highly decorated Special Operations Unit of the Iraq War. Jocko returned from Iraq to serve as Officer-in-Charge of training for all West Coast SEAL Teams.

He didn't tell anyone he'd be giving a talk, he just found an auditorium and started talking.
HAHAHAHAHA
Yeah, but even though you cant tell the whole talk, they built a TED Talk around him once they found out which auditorium he was at
Nobody dared to stop him. They wouldn't have even known how to.
Man this totally throws off the talk. I can’t take Jocko seriously now loooool

What makes Jocko different from many "motivational" speakers is that he talks about his failures, not successes. How many actually talk about their failures, never mind a failure that caused the death of someone? That's what makes Jocko so popular.
Has he ever admitted to taking PEDs?
@@justinbondar2491 He has not.
@@luckycharm_98 that's interesting!! He says extreme ownership is everything but he doesn't own using drugs to help him be so strong and disciplined
@@justinbondar2491 but has he ever been asked? Just saying.
@@marius5723 I imagine all these guys are eventually asked? To do what they do takes unimaginable discipline and strength. But if they're doping in secret then that makes them frauds. Jocko specifically harps on humility and extreme ownership. I follow him and that's what I've wondered. Has anyone asked him...because it's most likely these guys have doping programs. If he's really one with extreme ownership and humility then he'd be open about it like Rogan...I'm hoping he's not another dime-a-dozen fraud who dopes in private and then acts like they're naturally better than the rest of us. That's why I wanna know.

Same, I had always wanted to join the military and his books and videos were a big motivating factor. Almost 3 years later and I don't regret a single thing.
When marine corps recruiters came to jockos high school, they sat down and had a brief conversation with him before the marine corps stood up, shook his hand, and enlisted for a 4 year tour of jocko

I'm a Project Manager and when things go wrong and the panic sets in, I often say, "its ok, nobody died". Not so for war. When asked recently what I though my most important skill a leader has. I said, "providing clear direction and protecting each member of the team so they can use the skills I employed them for". This talk is a guide for life. Thanks for sharing.
I'm a Project Superintendent, I read the book when it first came out and have reread it a couple times since. It had such a profound effect on me that I bought copies and gave them to the two assistants I had on site at the time and one for my daughter, almost 10 years ago. I know they read the book because I saw the change in them almost immediately. The book so clearly expressed what I had known but did'nt know how to. I still use the lessons I learned from the book and do my best to carry through whether its the safety of the guys and gals on site or just the planning for the day. I do hold other responsibe but I hold myself responsible first. And yes it applies to everyday life. The book is much more in depth but the talk strikes a nerve!
Just found Jocko. I'll read the book.
@@waynej4962 roger that. report back when ready, recruit!
He in one of his book said: "People ask me what kept you going? And I say, when I was serving, I knew there are determined enemies out there who want to kill me. So I practiced to be prepared. "Take responsibility for your actions. And if you are in charge you ALWAYS take the responsibility for those under your command" Was something my CO instilled in me. And this mentality is deeply missing in this generation. How can you trust someone that does not stand up for his actions. Confessing mistakes hurt...alot. But disregarding or avoiding this painful tution makes you ultimately a miserable creature, never being able to better yourself.
When I was in ROTC and the navy they always said you are responsible for what your unit does or fails to do. That has stuck with me forever.
Amen brother.
Just look at the comment section, idiots are more interested to prove this guy as a chad rather than hearing his words!! I am beyond disgusted to read these comments.
Using Jocko's own lesson here, who is responsible for "this mentality is deeply missing in this generation"? The answer to that would be the people who raised them, instructed them, and led them. The people who didn't teach and show them how to be responsible and take ownership are at fault. I am not sure if that was the commenter's intended interpretation of his statement or not, but I say, if there is fault found in the young, their elder should be the ones who are ashamed.
Amen.
This is a man right here. Not because of what he did as a Navy Seal but because he has the humility to look at his failures and do something about it. That’s the kind of leader you can trust.
Youll never find.

When I was in the Navy, I worked in flight operations. One of my tasks was to make sure the flight crew's hotel accommodations were smooth so they could get checked in and rest for the night. I don't quite remember the details but there was some mix up when they got to the front desk. I dont even recall that it was my fault, but when the commanding pilot got back from the trip he asked "who made these accommodations?" I told him directly without hesitation "it was me Sir, I apologize." He looked at me and said "Wow, thank you. Most people wouldn't have admitted that." He and the other pilots, as well as my colleagues respected me from then on. I never forgot that feedback and I have always owned up to my mistakes since then. I passed that on to my son who now serves in the Army. When he owned up to mistakes, I rewarded him with respect, acknowledgement, and more trust.
When Jocko applied for a job, he interviewed his boss and asked to see his resume.
