In this View From The Top interview, Shantam Jain, MBA ’24, speaks with Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of NVIDIA.
As of March 1, 2024, NVIDIA is the third most valuable company on Wall Street, with over $2T in market value. Jensen shares his experience founding NVIDIA, getting funded, building the first killer application for NVIDIA’s technology, deciding which markets are worth exploring, finding the conviction in making non-consensus bets, steering the company through challenging times, designing the right organization structure, and finally, his views on the AI revolution.
Excerpts from the interview:
- On reputation: “You can have a good or bad interview, but you can't run away from your past, so have a good past; I was probably Denny's [first job] best dishwasher”
- On early days: “In order for NVIDIA to succeed we needed another startup to succeed-EA… and EA’s CTO was 14 and had to be driven to work by his mom… that’s who we were relying on”
- On markets: “If someone else can do it, let them do it; focus on--if I don't do it, it won't get done”
- On core beliefs: “My reaction during that time [when NVIDIA lost 80% of market value in the financial crisis], is the same reaction I had about this week [when NVIDIA crossed $2T and became the 3rd most valuable company on Wall Street]”
- On unique organizational design: “You have to go back to first principles ... as a CEO I have to architect the company and create an organization that allows my employees to do their life’s work”

  • Jensen has done well with NVIDIA , the company stock has been a booster for many investors. Yes I agree that the company stock is considered by many as the stock of the year, However, I'm curious about which stocks could potentially become the next META in terms of growth over the next decade. I've allocated $200k for investment, looking for companies to make additions to boost performance

    • A lot of folks downplay the role of advlsors until being burnt by their own emotions. I remember couple summers back, after my lengthy divorce, I needed a good boost to help my business stay afloat, hence I researched for licensed advisors and came across someone of utmost qualifications. She's helped grow my reserve notwithstanding inflation, from $275k to $850k.

    • Keeping money in the bank is like paying banks and the Govemment. Here's how it works: The bank gives out your money as loan, and charge interest obviously higher than inflation rate, and then give you, the depositor, interest lower than inflation rate. That means net loss for you. That is why I prefer to invest, and on average, my advisor makes returns that always beats inflation!

  • "Don't worry about how other companies or org charts look. Start from first principles. Remember what an organization is designed to do - an organization of the past where there's a king (CEO), then you have the royal subjects/court, then you keep working your way down - eventually you have employees. Well the reason why it was designed that way is because they wanted their soldiers to have as little information as possible because their fundamental purpose of the soldiers is to die in the field of battle. To die without asking questions. I only have 30,000 employees. I would like none of them to die. I would like them to question everything. So the way you organize in the past and the way you organize today is very different." Best quote. It really separates the two schools of thought around transparency and the mindset that permeates each.

    • Universal access to gaming cards was the reason AI (as we see it today) was founded to begin with and continues to thrive amongst the 1000s of researchers worldwide. Gaming is more than just fun - it's eventual goal is to simulate reality to a point of indistinguishability - where everything obeys the laws of physics - and that's the ultimate form of digitization that can exist. And we know how much was created via the digitization of things - imagine simulating climate ?. Ray Tracing, Optix, DLSS were all part of this journey and games are the killer application which is also a "market" which helped and is continuing Nvidia to help realize its goal.

  • I think the stock and crypto market will go sideways or down just slightly over the next 6 months. I'm hopeful there won't be anymore interest rate increases. The restart of student loan payments should be more than enough to get inflation in check. Personally, I think student loan payments should have resumed a year and a half ago. We probably could have avoided a lot of the inflation that has occurred over that time. It may have even been "transient" inflation as many were calling it back then. Early/mid 2025, interest rates should start dropping and the stock market will head to the moon. when news gets bearish start buying. "Keep it simple" that bear/ correction was the best thing that happened me.

  • I've always argued that the whole school of management is in the dish pit. There are many executives that have never washed dishes or even grasp that the process of management exists. MBA education didn't start until the 70's and executive pay went up and dreams went out the window. But the school of dish pits will live as wise monks exist. If you can wash dishes you know how to plan, organize, actuate and, the step most people forget is, control ie. put the spotty items back through the process. You learn how to prioritize because you deal with resources, pressure and people. There is another important insight here. Often the lowest paid is the operator of the most expensive machinery in an operation. One can be trained but few figure it out. A day in a dish pit is a measure of whether candidates should get the exec suite. Jensen Huang is a phenomenal leader because he knows how to be present when he washes dishes or any carries out any other task. May his humility continue to serve him and us well.

  • There's a tool that only a few hundred people in the world have access. You can literally take a picture of anyone and the tool gives you ALL information about that person. Jensen Huang reportedly uses every time he's out in a conference /dinner and wants to know more about potential partners. This man holds so much power.

He bet his entire company on A.I TEN years before anyone had an inkling idea and put the United States on the FOREFRONT of A.I technology today and he's just getting started. PC? Internet? Mobil? Cloud? Sure, they were important, but PALES compares to A.I. Just you wait and see.
