    • TikTok's Project Texas is a joke. Wherever is the database located, If we use CCP's software to access our data, we are at risk. Reviewing source code from China is also impossible because understanding someone else source code is 10 times harder than writing new source code. Nobody can do or pay for that. The data that other social media platforms sold have been filtered and modified so they are safe but TikTok is not.

I’ve gotten several “are you still on here?” videos telling me to get off after a binge. They also put in warnings for potentially inaccurate or biased videos. Hearing about the parental controls is reassuring as well. CEO is well spoken, rational, very smart, and seems to understand that keeping the platform healthy (in all ways) for its users is the best way towards continued growth. Also, there’s only so much they can do when it comes to some of the issues with kids: parents have to have some responsibility as well. Great talk. I just gained more respect for TikTok.

First, let's be real, American politics is already rigged by the capitalists, the corporates. Second, no sane, realistic, and humble person can ever guarantee they can stop bad actors. Which is why there is gun violence and other crimes. No government can guarantee it, much less a private entity. Third, the protections put in place by tiktok far exceeds anything that American big tech has tried to do or laws that American lawmakers have even come close to putting in place.

The host is such a good interviewer, he gets to poke at all the sensitive topics without being offensive and accusative. Finally, I'm amazed at how much additional effort and money TikTok was pushed to spend, in order to calm down concerns from all directions (psychological & political in particular). As honest efforts always pay off, I indeed believe in a future of longitivity for Tiktok.

They've already eaten up the SnapChat market, and now Tik Tok stands in it's way of the ever growing data marketshare.

  • Shou Chew is an exemplary leader of today. We can say all we want but this gentleman has exhibited professionalism, emotional regulation at the highest degree in all situations we have been shown, integrity and intelligence. I think we have to be fair that TikTok is an app and in the end it is a business with a mission and vision like all businesses do. While they have responsibility to their customers, the customers must be accountable on how they use the app, too. It's a collaboration effort between users and the app. If we are civil and morally aware, we would know what to and what not to. TikTok is an app that allows a stage for anyone and everyone regardless of our status, connections. Mr Chew says it, everyone stands a chance to make it so long as you have talent and of course posting regularly. Just like everything in life, exercise moderation, it will be a safe platform for all.

This was such a productive session and answered all the questions that Congress refused to let Shou answer or failed to ask. Chris Anderson and Shou Chew were brilliant. "You pulled off a kind of bipartisan consensus in US politics" - Just means that all US corporates are against tik tak and somehow tik tok hasn't bought any senator yet "You're one of the most influential and powerful people in the world, whether you know it or not" - Gives "with great power comes great responsibility" vibes and kind of speaks both of the humility of Shou and how much Chris Anderson genuinely hopes Shou knows the weight of his responsibility and how much he wishes Shou well.

    • The issue has nothing to do with free speech. It has to do with human nature - dopaminergic response (which causes many addictions). Apps like TikTok are causing mental health crises in every nation, especially among youth. In the future, hopefully you realize that the first thing that pops into our head ("free speech") may not be the issue at hand. I hope you can push yourself to think on topics more broadly, and you can see it's a complicated world. Best of luck.

    • @@amulia1 You're making a classic mistakes of equivalents. Why did you assume *_both_* aren't addictive? Both ARE addictive. But TikTok is much more addictive, in two ways. First -- per hour, TikTok throws many more short-form videos at a typical user. So on TikTok, a user is bombarded by more addictive & emotional moments per hour. (TikTok's video creation tools let content-creators create more "catchy" & addicting/emotional videos - by comparison a typical YT video is less exciting & often boring). Second, TikTok's algorithms are optimized for more active emotional engagement every second & every minute. YT can't (and doesn't need to) monitor the user so often (since YT videos are so much longer. Both are addictive & both manipulate their users, but TikTok does both much more. It's more dangerous. The sociological studies keep showing TikTok is one of the most addictive. All of this comparative info comes not from belief or opinion, but from many scientific & sociological studies.

I can't be bothered about tiktok. I don't like that type of media, it's too attention grabbing and mind-numbing. I won't be going around telling people about 'ooooo how disciplined I am'. It's also similar to 'hard work', especially when someone is ignorant about their own privilege. Or, imagine if you had the genetic predisposition to getting addicted to certain things? Of course there are exceptional examples who have fantastic levels of discipline despite external temptations, but that's not the majority. It definitely feels better to take credit for everything I guess.

  • I think what to rethink is the definition of creativity and joy. The content is the key, algorithms are less important. Personally I am cautious about indirect information. It is less relevant to my life, it is much harder to tell its authenticity. No matter how it is tailored for entertainment or tutoring , the information quality degrades because of the fewer degrees of freedom contact between me and that piece of information. The best quality information is from real life, the things happening in real life that has a direct interact or impact. All those media platforms are basically engineering information so-seriously using AI that asks users to pay attention and then forget. Additionally, creation or distribution of information should be free. I don't know how much value people's attention is to the media platform and the advertisement industry, but eventually I believe in no-cost, feel-free, authentic and transparent information creation, distribution and feedback.

However, the Chinese government is very aware of the negative impacts of a short attention span. So they took the proactive measures. In the US, we will have to ask the question of whether we care more about censorship in this case or do we care more about things that can negatively impact the future. It seems the US is quite bad at this though. The government is controlled by money, so that’s why we are always behind in adopting better policies

TikTok is not unlike KZhead, Netflix or Spotify or other platforms that recommend things to you based on what you like or have watched/listened to, or commerce platforms that recommend other things to purchase based on what you have bought or like. It must be a very tensed and suffocating situation at which he has been facing since the hearing. But to be honest, I still don't see any critical evidence or logically rigorous points that can really persuade and to prove his points against the doubts and questions. It's far not enough to comfort and assure the group of people with different concerns. Great CEO, barely qualified team in strategies. I think his team is not doing their job well enough to support him, they should come up with ideas and expresssions much better than this. Anyways, wish him and his team good luck on this matter.
