  • The Guide elaborates on the techniques used on the show. The examples given in the kzhead.infoUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 are helpful and some of the techniques suggested very useful. One such technique/tool suggested was the lure stick to encourage a small dog to keep up with the heel command. I have a small dog who lags behind smelling any and everything and find it hard to keep bending over while walking to his level. The lure stick is great also for another dogs focus and sprinting at anything that catches her eye. The stories about different dogs, their different temperaments, have been helpful, especially Lulu's: After reading about Lulu's challenges I felt relief concerning one of my rescues that I have had for 10 years. Over many years I have checked out many training books from the library, watched different shows, DVDS, bought training books, taken lessons and this book is the best by far! Kindness, patience and perseverance works.

    • I felt that way with my doberman. It's tough at first, but it does get better. Puppies aren't easy. They are a lot of work. Especially if you do it right. Hang in there.

  • I trained my neighbour’s lab using a kong as the lure. He couldn’t care less about food. I’ve been working him for 2 years and I don’t need a leash to walk him. I recently adopted a 3 1/2 year old Australian Shepherd and am determined to get him to the same level but reality has slapped me in the face, hard! I’m enjoying the challenge but it’s soooo much more work without a lure like food. I watch your videos every day and continue to enjoy and learn but I realize how lucky I was with my first dog. They’re a fun challenge and I never quit. Keep up the great work Will

  • You can also just build play bond then incorporate a stop, wait for the dog to sit repeat and repeat, now you have a dog that automatically sits when it comes to you saves you having to use treats 👍🏼

  • Been using the luring method with good success with my 12 week old Collie x labradoodle. So far got good sits, downs, walk (heel), name (look), here. Taking this more out of the house now to add more distractions, which is getting there. It's good stuff.

  • I love your channel, and I have a question. Just one, I have a mastiff female 7-month-old pup who loves to play. When I take her to the dog park. Park she love to chase and play with all the dogs and when the small ones come in they are scared to death of her and they run and she think they're playing. So she runs after them and the dogs are scared to death. She wouldn't hurt them for nothing but I always get in trouble for it and if not fair to pull her out of the park because she's big ger. Is there something I can teach her or do different?..

  • I come across a lot of other trainers saying the type of slip leads really matters in training. I heard dog owners should have a spring stopper opposed to a leather one and I just wanted to know if this really mattered or is it just the technique with the use of the lead

  • Just found your video's and am hoping they will help me with teaching my 2 yr old Otterhound to stay. He is very smart but strong willed and very food motivated. He knows what stay means and does it at all other times unless food is involved. Like when I am preparing his dinner. He will return to spot each time he is told but wander right back over to me 2 seconds later. It drives me nuts!

    @karenlong5997@karenlong59974 ай бұрын
    • Does he have a release command? Lots of dogs that struggle with Stay, do so because no release command was taught, so they decide on their own when they're released. The only other thought I have is to up the consequences for breaking early, i.e. put the food away for a couple minutes, and then try again.

  • Watch Michael Ellis No one puts dog training in more easy to understand terms Best training comes from sport, compilation drives advancing of techniques, now not all pet owners want a sport type trained dog but u can tailor the training to ur own needs when u understand principles Principles are not opinions

  • If one does not have a dog that is in the least treat ot food driven, what advice would you give? I have a very, extremely strong willed Chorkie. Yes, i know i have a lot of issues that he picks up on, i get that. He's a good boy- listening just isn't his strong point. It's probably me ..

  • @Will Atherton, I wonder if you can help with door manners. We have a Staffy X that we reacued when she was 7 months. We were her 5th owners!!! She was a bit mouthy, but within a week we had trained her out of that. We have done a lot if training and now at 4, she is a different dog. However she was so affection starved before she came to us and has a serious case of FOMO, so when somwone knocks at thw door, or comes in, ahe just thinks its for her. She wants ti be everyone's friend, but she is a big girl and not everyone has come to play. 😂 She is not treat motivated when she os excited fo see people, so that makes it tricky. What can i do to get her better at the door. So people can come in amd then say hello ti hwr calmly?

    @ellyjemison8331@ellyjemison83314 ай бұрын
    • I like the old Cesar Milan approach: Claim the area around the door. Don't open the door until your dog will give you that space. When you do open the door, be prepared to shut it immediately, and start over a few times. Once the guest is inside, claim the space around them while they ignore the dog. Obviously, you'll need "training guests" who are ok with having the door slammed in rheir face, to do a bunch of repetitions. HTH

      @corymarinan2996@corymarinan29964 ай бұрын
    • Thank you, that could work, as people is her reward. X I will see if anyone is willing to be a training guest.

  • how do you deal with anxiety in dogs? I've got a 5 month old shollie and we've only just been able to get him outside as he's been sick but now he won't even walk he's just frozen in fear

    @cal7281@cal72814 ай бұрын
    • Not an expert by any account, and you should probably consult a dog behaviorist. However, I'm guessing because he's not been going out because of the illness, he's missed some key socialisation time, e.g. he's not learned that all these weird human sights/sounds/smells are safe and nothing to worry about. So, gradual introductions to all the things that he'll be exposed to, and helping him both get used to and learn they these scary things are actually good things, is likely the way to go. For example, you could simply go into your front garden (instead of a walk) and play games and do something fun (make outside a good place). If there's something he's particularly scared of, e.g. cars, find the distance he is relatively comfortable and treat him every time a car drives past. As he gets more comfortable (likely weeks rather that hours or days), expose him to more. The important thing is to make sure he's not scared, if so he's being pushed too far, and you will need to take it back a step. If you want to learn more, search on here or on Google about desensitisation and counterconditioning. Hope that helps somewhat, and as I said, consulting a behaviourist is likely the best way to help your pup in the quickest, safest way 😊

      @ryanstansfield5156@ryanstansfield51564 ай бұрын
    • I'd start by just hanging out with him. No walking, unless he wants to wander around the yard (assuming the yard is not a busy/scary place). Maybe throw in some engagement drills. Teaching a dog to get on a place board, and heaping on the praise when he does can be a real confidence builder.

      @corymarinan2996@corymarinan29964 ай бұрын
    • he's okay with sounds and people and dogs it's just he goes shaky and he won't listen to commands and just shuts down really got him out walking and he will walk but he's dead low down and his ears pinned and it's started in the home to I'm not sure why as he was perfect and then woke up the next morning and he was like that
