CLIP DESCRIPTION:
April (Kate Winslet) and Frank (Leonardo DiCaprio) have breakfast together, and Frank explains what he'll be doing at his new job.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Titanic shipmates Kathy Bates, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Kate Winslet step onboard for director Sam Mendes' tale of suburban malaise in 1950s-era Connecticut. Adapted from the classic 1961 novel by author Richard Yates, Revolutionary Road tells the tale of a young Connecticut couple whose once-idealistic relationship steadily deteriorates into a ceaseless cycle of petty jealousy and bickering as they strive to retain their independence in the conformity-obsessed world of picket fences and perfectly manicured lawns. Ever since they first met, Frank (DiCaprio) and April (Winslet) saw themselves as special and different. They strive to form their relationship around higher ideals, though upon moving into their new home on Revolutionary Road, the defiant couple pledges never to be confined by the social conventions of the era. As time passes, however, Frank and April gradually become the very thing that they both feared most -- a typical suburban family complete with abandoned dreams and faded hopes. Frank loses his nerve after taking a comfortable job with a reliable salary, and April morphs into an unsatisfied homemaker desperate for passion and excitement. But April's independent spirit hasn't been suffocated just yet, and when she hatches a plan to head for Paris, her need to escape at all costs stands in direct contrast to Frank's desire to hold on to what they already have.

Finally a non yelling scene
I enjoy him yelling a lot though
That’s what happens after lot of yelling and you finally lose the hope of changing someone
Haha
sierrasagstudios ikr
The last scene
wow, he has the most expressive eyes ive ever seen
Exactly!! 😍
Those eyes at 1.30!WOW
Thank You For Highlight That!! I KNOW Exactly The Type Of Eyes You Are Talking About, I'm Glad You Notice And Appreciate It Too
1908pepps exactly what am i saying
yes😍
Kate is sublime. These two are acting the shit out of this movie,so much dept and layers of emotions. There chemistry is definitely undeniable.
nivledamh exactly rlly late here
*their
*their
Obviously
He was so unnerved by her calmness. He can handle the yelling, but the calm freaks him out. Watch his eyes and the way he nervously gulps throughout the scene. He knew something was wrong and was trying at the end to compliment her because he knew she was acting abnormally.
hothotheat3000 Interesting. I didn’t perceive the scene that way the first few times but I can see what you mean. I took it as him being genuinely surprised she was paying attention to his work/was interested but I can see how his reaction could also be taken as being unnerved or unsettled.
Responding 3 years late but I do wanna chime in on it. I’ve never seen the film. I probably should. Though I’ve seen the scenes posted, so I’ve gather a rather small interpretation of this. My interpretation is Leo’s character has realized the Winslet’s character is fallen out of love. His efforts may be to try to regain that love in some way so he tries speaking softly and speaking rather “sweet.” Kate’s character has completely detached but she does try to put in some effort into regaining love for him. But that’s the issue; you can’t force love to happen or disappear, it just does. So they both just accept that there is really no love left in the relationship and are both rather doomed.
@Alejandro good analysis. Once someone is indifferent to you and stops fighting, they’ve given up. Men mistake a quiet wife for a happy one and don’t realize that once she stops fighting, she’s given up and is emotionally divorced from you.
The moral of the movie: 1. Do not announce your plans. 2. Be careful with the things you say, they may kill. 2. When suicidal ask for help.
Where is 3?
Masquerade did April kill herself?
April didn't kill herself, she was preparing to abort the baby, but died due to complications.
@@edgararita5125 i personally think so. it may have been depicted differently in the book, but i think she did (the "emotionless" conversation/breakfast with frank-- the look on her face was speaking loudly that she was done, she was brushing her hair and straightening her belongings on the dresser, the phone call to Milly asking her to keep the kids a little longer and her trying her hardest not to cry during the phone call). with that being said, i also feel like she may began to regret what she had done immediately once she saw the amount of blood she was beginning to lose. that's just my opinion though. i could be wrong.
It's a beautiful movie but I love them on Titanic more
Leo is heart-breaking in this scene. He’s trying to hold it all together for the both of them, make sense of the marriage and she is so detached. She’s completely gone. There is nothing behind her eyes.
Not exactly, you can tell she cares about how he feels. That's why she's complimenting him, encouraging, an made him a breakfast. She cares for him, but she's done with everything.
@@kinndah2519 What you describe is exactly what I described. I never said she didn’t care about him. I said she was detached; you say she’s done with everything. Similar conclusions.
@@pam0626 You said there's nothing behind her eyes, I believe there is. Love and pain. She isn't completely gone, She's just tired.
This is why you never get married
@@akshaynatu1084 It's not always about talent. Most of the time you need the connections.
My take on her calmness was that she realized she had already died. Her dream was extinguished. When he said breakfast was "nice", it reminded me of Pleasantville. Suburban Desperation with a bow on it
pavanatanaya me too
pavanatanaya yup
People are going gaga over Leo in the comments section. And very little mention of how Kate subtley underplays her emotions to perfection here. She barely says a few words but all the parts of her face are telling a story. What an incredible incredible actress!
nitara and the wow factor in this is that leo could not tell through her expressions and the monotone in her voice that she was really dying
Yes she's great🤗🤗🤗
Very true...
nitara yeah you can just tell by the look on her face that she is just done and ready to leave the planet without saying hardly a word. You can tell when someone has had enough when they don’t care to fight for it or over it anymore.
She is an incredible actress !
Kate's acting is on point. So brilliant.
I Agree!!
facts! she's a wonderful actress!
The scene where he comes home and imagines April and the children are celebrating his birthday demonstrates that his true desire is for April to be happy with their life the way it is. His pain comes from her inability to be satisfied in the life they have together. After all, April offered to give him "the life he wanted" and he got cold feet....because he already had the life he wanted. He just wanted her to accept it too.
Heather Uteshev Watching this movie made me realise how sick April was, she should have gotten help during the earlier signs. I mean how can you decide to marry someone willy nilly, no thought about the future, then complain about marriage life and expect to fly off to another country with no economic security? If he did as she asked, the downside would have made her resent him more, and she would have kept blaming him. April lacked the ability to take responsibility for her choices-- but she didnt know whay the consequences of choices are, how much realism and thought needs to be taken into account; because of that she kept blaming him instead of acknowledging her mistakes.
Very accurate observation. :)
Wtf it was his imagination!
The Oblivion Lord how can she get help when she didnt know whats wrong with her in the first place ? Im in tge exact same situation still dont know how yo end this
Wait it wasn’t his imagination though...
I was stunned by the accuracy of this scene. When someone has already made the decision to die, the fight is over. A person is calm, like she is here. He, of course, didn't know this and just thought her anger had dissipated. Emotionally, she way beyond his ability to pacify. He was like a hamster trying to tame a jaguar. Great scene. But the book blew the movie out of the water.
Really?? I"ve Never Read The Book, But I Loved The Movie. I Like How You Said "He Was Like A Hamster Trying To Tame A Jaguar", I Know The EXACT Type Of Situation You're Referring To.
Lisa Young Thank you. The book is considered an American classic. You should definitely read it!
pup lover I don't think she was emotionally too out of his league .I think it was the other way round , she couldn't match the emotional intensity that his rages had.
pup lover Did she really purposely commit suicide? I just thought she had a miscarriage and she died accidentally because of it
sarah lilith She didn't kill herself, you're right. I've read the book. She knew they risks, but she was so desperate to get rid of the baby. I I don't remember if it was before or after performing the abortion on herself, but April called an ambulance so they could assist her on her 'miscarriage'. She even cleaned up a little to prevent people from finding out she did it on herself.
Kate is amazing in this scene. You can almost hear her screaming in her mind.
She's a mess.
The smiles they exchange at @1:35 made me cry. Please please they need to do another movie again soon. Best chemistry ever.
Superrr💙
i know right! their chemistry is brilliant!
@@cristinelagnason2206 the smile is the guess, whomever is fake either kate Or lio, that we have to guess as an audience
AMAZING CHEMISTRY
The way he smiles at 1:33 OH MY GOD
ADORBZ
I knew she was going to fuck herself up, the moment she stood there like a perfect house wife with breakfast ready... it's too sketchy XD
I slightly think that Kate won the Oscar for the wrong movie. She was great in "The Reader" and it was a good film but I think there was a wider emotional spectrum for Kate's character in this film. At least she did win an Oscar, obviously things worked out for the best, but if I had to nominate Kate for a movie that year I would've picked this one, and I still think she could've won for this.
+AJB3 This was easily the better performance. For one, it was undeniably the lead role, where some could see her performance in the Reader as supporting. This is also the better movie I think. But nevertheless, her performance in this honestly ranks as one of the best in 00's.
Same thing with Leo, should’ve won for catch me if you can, or The Departed. Not The Revenant
Totally Agree
Both of them have the extraordinary gift and ability to make the audience believe, and forget that they're just acting. Unreal.
Definition of A-list actors lol
He's afraid of change, sure, but he has the feeling that no matter how hard he tries to be happy...there is a huge emptiness in the life they have built, together. He tries so hard to ignore that. He *thinks* if she could be happy, he would be too. That would make it a lot easier for him to keep up the facade. But he has dreams, too. He's just not 'wooed' by the fairytale of them coming true any more. He's locked that away and so he's making the best of what he's got.
fancy0face not afraid, more like cautious of the risks. He has a stable job, a stable income. Without having a means of income assured in paris; its way too risky to move to another without economic stability-- no sane person would have recommended the move.
Actually he IS happy with his life right now. What he isn't happy about is katee being unhappy in the life he is enjoying which creates all the drama basically.
It's not April or Frank's fault that their marriage didn't work. They just wanted very different things. And they both refused to acknowledge each other's sufferings. In the end April got depressed, realising that she'll never have what she wanted and the future she waited so patiently will never happen. And when she lost all hope, she probably thought it wasn't worth the trouble. Damn I truly feel sorry for both of them.
Unfortunately neither of them were willing to sacrifice anything either. They both wanted very different things like you said but they made a family anyways and both were too selfish to fold even just a little.
A sad reality for many women at the time
This is truly heartbreaking.
I love this scene so much. It is the embodiment of everything Kate's character stated earlier in the film: "And you know whats so good about the truth? Everyone knows what it is however long they've lived without it. NOONE FORGETS THE TRUTH, FRANK, THEY JUST GET BETTER AT LYING."
I don't think she meant to kill herself. She was just trying to get rid of the baby to keep hope alive that things would change. I believe she wanted to save her marriage but at the same time she wanted them to change their lifestyle. She figured if she got rid of the baby, both could happen. You're right, words can definitely hurt more than being physically hit. Words can definitely do more damage.
I love this movie so much, April's facial expressions as she is trying her hardest to show interest in what he would do at a job is so great to watch. I think we have all been there where we have struggled so much to care about a person, thing, or situation but ultimately just couldn't.
he is unbelievably gorgeous, same with Kate. They are meant for each other :")
Did you actually watch the film?
I love how you can see Leo’s emotions through his eyes it’s cute
The underlying tension in this scene is unparalleled.
Two of greatest actors ever!!! Hands down!! I knew something was about to happen cause she was so dam calm and his eyes wow 😩
0:42 her facial expression, though :( It's exactly the expression I'd expect to see on the face of a person who knows they'll be gone for good ..
ikr
I feel equally for both of them. They are simply not right for one another and live in a time that created a prison for them both. Actually, I suppose I feel more for April because she is truly alone. Frank has his job and he loves his life the way it is. April is unhappy because she has nothing of her own. Frank is unhappy because he doesn't want things to change.
Heather Uteshev I agree
Not *want*-- more like cant risk it. He has a job, a stable future; throwing all that away for a chance was risky in that era.
I don’t think he loves his life at all. I think he’s just less brave than April and doesn’t want to take a huge risk at destroying a comfortable life for a chance of creating a more unpredictable one. I think he’s very unhappy and doesn’t feel appreciated at his job in the movie but he does a better job at masking his feelings than April.
He hates his job. April has two kids.
@@gee2541 well said.
1:26 awww look how happy and relieved he looked whenever she said that I feel like all they need to do is just open up in a calm way and tell each other that they loved one another I think they could have lasted such a great movie though
He's gorgeous. Our children would be adorable.
I swear if someone was ugly as hell and had kids with Leo they would still be adorableand Gorgeous bc hopefully they would have all Leo genes.
If and when . It's been 5 years since you made this comment.
Well then.
This movie has such a consistent color palette.
Poxow I love it. So satisfying
The part where he runs from the hospital after she's dead is just disappointing and haunting, especially the soundtrack played with it. One of the beautiful movies ever ♥️
These two are gems. Two of the best actors across the world.
Truly, And the fact that they are two best friends who can say that they were once the two biggest stars on the planet in 1997, it's pretty cool actually.
The best actor and actress who have the best chemistry with each other
So sad how they're finally pretending to be "normal", trying to accept and fit in the world they both despised. The two passionated and idealistic people they were completely broke down under the pressure of society and there's nothing left but a fake cover of "perfection".
I feel that love was not the problem here. The problem was the time frame. He felt since she got pregnet the first time he had to give up on his dreams and man up. Like she said she going to take the money even though you hate what you do. We spend more time in our jobs than at home so he was miserable and he took that with him. April on the other wanted the life of what women today have. Accomplished women with careers and family. But it was limited during those times. I
1:30-1:36..Leo's expression was just fantastic..the eyes were telling a thousand stories
This movie is not for the weak. You can feel the tension from your screen in person and it’s very very dark. Wonderful acting by both
0:25 close your eyes and imagine jack talking to rose
This scene is just like a tornado. You're in the eye before it hits you again.
He looks like puppy here, so cute
I love this scene Frank is so surprised that April cares and takes an interest in his stuff.
This movie is so emotional.
I really love Leonardo how he's acting his facial expression he so handsome 😍
I remember watching this film in the cinema. They played their roles so well that while I was watching this scene, I knew the fate of their relationship and could see in both their actin the decisions they had made. They played it so well that as an audience,I knew that they both knew each others decision and had bth accepted it, without actually explicitly addressing it in dialogue. Fantastic acting
Frank loves his way of life? I didn't get that. He's *accepted* his way of life, and was *trying* to make his miserable marriage, work. He was trying to make himself believe, for so long that he was happy...he had the tougher time forcing himself to put on a smile for everyone and was putting the efforts in for his wife, too. That cracked her up (as it would, of-course), but my heart ached for him. I felt her frustration, but I felt his pain.
I think he was happier at work being recognized for his work s& chosen for the new project. He was all about going to France before that. Or said he was in because he had no idea what else to do.
50s style looks good on them xx
00:38 her eye movement is so subtle but it makes it clear she’s so not ok
She didn't mean to, she just wanted to get rid of the baby because she thought her and Frank would go back to being normal and have more "nice breakfasts" but it didn't work out and she died :(
They both don’t seem to be the competitive type, but they’re UNINTENTIONALLY competing with their chemistry together and their acting, they both KILLED it together in this film.
he is so beautiful *-*
I feel like Leo lived all this emotions through his films and he is just relaxing in his real life with 20 years old models. Which is understandable🤷♀️
I always come back to watching clips of this movie, the acting is incredible, emotions so real, the calm and awkwardness after that huge fight they had feels amazingly real.
Once again Jack shows Rose one of his drawings and she compliments it.
Just another masterpiece performance by two brilliant actors...the score by Thomas Newman is infectious......a great but sad movie...hat's off to Revelutionary Road!!!
This is arguably the most heartbreaking scene out of all the heartbreakers in this film, because you can tell how much they’re holding back and longing to break out of their ‘happy home’ shells, yet at the same time they really want this ‘happy home’ to be real but they know it can’t. ‘American Dream’? More like American Nightmare!
1:39 she feels sorry for him
This scene is a perfect example of how certain men can't read their partner. You can look in April's eyes and tell she's given up and is no longer available
Certain people*
honestly 100%. alot of guys are like this and are so clueless, they dont even realise that their partners have already checked out of the relationship long before they break up
@Jeff Jefferson No men. Self awareness is not many men's strong suit
@shania ikitule Exactly. But they be so shocked when the person snaps or just ends up leaving. The signs were there but they either ignore it or really just don't know
@@Bluehime Self awareness is not the strong suit of many women, either.
She's unhappy (I get that) and he's unhappy...but I end up feeling for him, more.
Why
So do i, april is being incredibly unrealistic.
I think people tend to sympathize with men more.
@@laurenpresley8480 bruh... Sorry i completely disagree with you. Mother, sister, grandmother and you female love is more sympathy looked at and tend to connect more. As women express their emotions and men tend not to.
@@laurenpresley8480 the opposite is true
People that romanticize the past, like "I wish I lived in the 50's" or whatever. Somethings never change. It's just real life, it's the same thing with different window dressing. I love when things that are set in the past feel as relative as today.
'Swell Breakfast'. How accurate.
Stunning scene.
i just love the music after the end of the scream and the crying scenes
Great movie. One of my favorites. Beautifully written. I had the read the book before seeing the film, and was happy to see how close to the novel the film turned out to be. Such as this scene. It’s not so much about what they say here, but what they don’t say to each other. Kate feels hopeless as if she’s failed, as a wife & as a mother. Imagine the guilt she must be feeling. Which ultimately led to her decision to end her life. Very sad.
Ppl are still going through this bs today. Only difference is they dont have houses anymore (no1 can afford one) the facade is done in apartments.
This scene is so dramatic.....without explicitly being it.
My god this was my favorite scene ever in the book, the way it was described and the best part of it was how he kissed her after, right before he leaves. It was like "I kissed her without even touching her, like those movie stars" or something. Love this movie it did the book justice.
April's calmness, resignation and seemingly blank stare was far more terrifying than anything else she could have thrown at him in this scene.
1:31 the way he stares his eyes r so beautiful ❤️
Rose & Jack r emotion ❤️
So this is what my parents where like when I was 6 all I remember was the yelling
I hope they can do another movie together! They are really good together and their chemistry is on point! 😍
finally, a scene where Frank and April aren't yelling at each other!!!!!!!!
This moment, Did both give up ? I truly believe they both did
I love how leo is trying to make everything work, and make her happy, but then there is Kate trying to seem interested but she is like, “f of” haha, what a swell breakfast in deed haha
Love this movie!!
Well I love all the comments but can we just appreciate for a moment how good of an actor they both are? Especially Leo who dosent let me not get surpised whenever he is on screen
This is breaking my heart..
April always thought that a "better life" could only happen in a faraway place. In all likelihood, the glamour of living in Paris would have worn off and she would have once again been miserable. That's not to say that life can't improve by changing your surroundings. But April seemed to have no idea what she was leaving. Or why.
In this scene I think, he look to her with gratitude at the end, but at the same time like for the character he was playing as if she were unfamiliar to him. familiar but not familiar at the same time, what things. Skill.👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💎. And she wow wow how she laughs in One of these scenes, incredible talented, seems all super real. I finally found my two favorite actors 🎨🙏🏻♥️.
Thank yOu recognizing It 🙏🏼
Hold on for a second. So people keep saying Frank wasn't aware of April's feelings here. Like he thought she forgot everything and they are fine now. Can't you see his eyes? He knows really well nothing is okay. When he asks if she loves him and April says of course, he doesn't believe her. Of course not. Frank had the feeling what is coming. Stop saying he wasn't aware of the things here. He was.
Two of the most talented actors of our generation!
Lol If Jack and Rose got married, I low key feel like this movie would be their relationship down the road
My guy had no job, she was high maintenance and had no skills, that relationship wouldn’t have lasted a year.
This was tense. This "facade" did not fool me and I KNEW something bad was going down after this. =(
Great contemporary film, I just find this film adequate and relatable to prosperous middle class that lives empty lives or going through the social norm, lol but people that are in unemployment, trying to find a job wish they can trade places with this family
People are never happy with what they have
I wish they had included the scene where he looks at her and says" You dont hate me, do you?". Thata kills me, and the impending scenes, it all goes downhill from there :(
The name April fits really good to her. Her mood is like the weather in April.
U know this scene is out of this world once you've seen the ending of the movie
This scene sums up a modern American marriage in suburbia
i love u Leonardo
Leo’s eyes 💙
When They Smile, I see the Young Them.😢
AWESOME MOVIE !!!!
Hi everyone! I'm Russian and I would like to apologize for the mistakes in advance ( if there are any). So. I can't say that I literally fell in love with this movie. There are still some things that I don't totally understand. But it is so impressive and deep that I can't help crying every time I look into these eyes... Damn it, why couldn't they be happy?! 😭
Exactly. I mean two kids, great home Just needed to work on her. Maybe getting her a job in acting or something she would enjoy like a hobby. So many women of bad economic background and conservative view point would think, what is the problem? Why is she so unhappy?
Kate is always carrying the emotional weight and delicacy between these two.
