What’s the movie Shutter Island about?
Discover Shutter Island: the critically acclaimed adaptation directed by Martin Scorsese of the novel by Dennis Lehano. This magnificent thriller released in 2010, features Leonardo DiCaprio as Federal Teddy Daniels, and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), two U.S. marshals assigned to investigate the disappearance of a psychiatric facility patient.
The two of them will look into the case of missing Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer) directly on the Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. There they will meet with Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) the lead psychiatrist and head of the institution, and begin to suspect that the whole incident as well as their presence there is part of something way darker. Knowing one of the patients, and having an agenda of his own, Teddy Daniels will try to stay sane in this most disturbing island.

I know you won't do what I'm about to recommend because if you were intelligent you would have already done so, but look at the Oscar winner and nominees that year. Shutter Island was not even close, and DiCaprio is a good actor, not a great actor, he just does popular roles that get thrown at him because he established his fame early, for reasons I won't bring up but that are known in Hollywood.

  • Something that is eerily haunting about this scene, despite the obvious, is the birds cheerily chirping. Particularly once he's laid all his children down on the ground and takes his little girl's shoe off to rub her feet. Birds chirping are usually synonymous with spring and everything coming back to life. Meanwhile Andrew/Teddy's life has just crumbled. It also shows that no matter the horror of what we are dealing with at any given time, life just keeps on going - the sun rises, birds chirp, the world still turns...

  • Like the murder scene at the lake in Fincher's Zodiac, this is further proof that a scene can be way more horrifying and bone chilling with absolutely no bombastic or manipulative soundtrack to let you know when you're supposed to be 'afraid' or 'shocked'. The quiet stillness and the tranquil sounds of nature, the birds singing (or in Zodiac the sound of the woodpecker), it just builds the tension and horror so subtly but makes it all the more effective. I wish more filmmakers would go this route in sequences like these.

This leaves the viewers contemplating on whether the whole experiment actually worked on Dicaprio. Dicaprio was probably healthy and in the right mind when he went to get his lobotomy and he went willingly.

I told her I would be there for her and take her to appointments, and support her etc, but I could no longer be in the relationship. This went on for about 2 months before I allowed myself to accept she was lying. (Her roommate and mother were either in in the ruse or were lied to themselves). When she realized I wasn't going to cave she basically vanished. Deleted her social media, and never contacted me again. It wasn't until 3 or so months later when a friend of her friend that we both met at a party once contacted me on Facebook and told me she was full of shit. Told her last bf she was pregnant and faked a miscarriage, made up stories of getting mugged by a girl she saw as a rival etc. Basically she had been conning people for years. I was so grateful to this girl for reaching out to me because I felt so confused by it all. I had my suspicions but it's so hard to even ask yourself 'is this person lying about something so huge?' I heard an episode of RadioLab that spoke of this guy who fell in love with a con artist. Dated her for a year before things fully unraveled. People asked him 'do you find it hard to trust others now?' And he said 'no, I find it hard to trust myself'. Kinda summed up my feelings perfectly. It's been 10 years now and I'm doing fine. I think about her sometimes and I hope she found help. But honestly I doubt it. She seemed content in the way she moved through the world

  • I've seen this movie twice, like 10 years apart. And it's 2 for 2 in making me cry. He's excellent at displaying genuine emotion without it feeling forced or over the top. I feel for him in such an awful moment, realizing you're wife has done something so terrible, and you feeling partially responsible. To the point that at the end of the movie, he is perfectly sane but decides to play sick again so he can get the lobotomy. He doesn't want to live as a monster but instead wants to die as a good man.

    • @@Magicae_Maximus24 There's tons of versions, but the original one didn't have anything to do with murdered children. La Llorona was actually an omen in Tenochtitlan (Aztec Empire capital) that foretold the Spaniards were arriving soon and the Aztecs would be slaughtered and conquered. She appeared at night numerous times before the Spanish arrived and cried out "my children, your destruction is near" "Where can you go? Where can I take you so you can escape such terrible destiny?" The Aztecs believed she was the Goddess Cihuacoatl, a deity that protected the Aztec people.

Leo has a gift to render those scenes in a human way. The way he's already rejecting reality when he rubs his daughter's feet. When he asks his wife to stop talking crazy... when he has a glimpse of reality left in him and shoots her only to realise now hes truly alone. Thats 100% how someone can beget crazy having problems distinguishing reality from fiction. When stuff like that happens to you, its very hard to take in. • This is one of the most disturbing movie scenes I’ve ever seen, it literally makes me feel ill, and I mean that as a compliment, on top of the incredible acting I think one of the things that really makes this scene unsettling is the fact that apart from the one piano note and the birds chirping the scene is dead silent, there’s no dramatic or suspenseful music playing while all of this is going on which adds to the eeriness because it makes feel more real, especially when he looks up and shouts no, that’s something that could’ve easily come across as cheesy but because of the more realistic atmosphere this scene has it feels totally believable and it sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it, and yeah, if you were a parent I’m sure the sight of all your children’s dead bodies floating in the water would be the most horrific image you could possibly imagine, I feel so sorry for him every time I see this scene, also another thing that never ceases to amaze me is how startling the gunshot is, no matter how many time I watch this movie even though I know it’s coming it shocks me every single time, I seriously do not understand why Shutter Island is widely considered one of Martin Scorsese’s lesser movies and how some people don’t like it cause I think it’s one of his best

    • I agree. Obviously wolf of wall street and inception and django unchained are amazing performances. But this is something different. Very few actors can truly express the pure pain of losing your family especially the way he did. Because not only was it tragic but he felt guilty. He should have more than one oscar
