Big Tech Fight Night: Cook vs. Zuck
A new privacy feature in Apple’s iOS 14.5 requires apps to request permission to track you. And Facebook isn’t happy about it. WSJ’s Joanna Stern put Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Apple CEO Tim Cook into the ring to explain why this software update has kicked off a tech slugfest. • One does not have to like Apple. But their main business model is not user data and ad-revenue, it is hardware and services around that hardware. Which is why they fight so hard for their app shop revenue as that is a huge chunk of it. And of course, it is as well displayed by the different approach to payment systems, Google Pay is basically free for the bank, but the user has to agree that all his purchase data can be used by Google. Apple on the other hand gets a percentage of each transaction from the banks, but does not use the data. Now, in this case there is of course a caveat, the only apps that do not have to ask the user for permission to use the ad-tracking, are apple ads. And that is simply a stupid move by Apple.

Just think of how many people would’ve to start paying money so they can use Facebook. When a product is free, you are the product. I personally would choose to get targeted apps rather than paying for hundred more apps which my parents can’t afford. Still a bold move by Apple tho

    • @@rok1475 I’m too young to know about most of those examples, but apple is objectively a different company now, especially after the death of Steve jobs. You can swap components between iPhones and you can repair parts, the issue is the supply of parts and the voiding of warranties. The reason why you can’t swap Touch ID home buttons specifically is for anti-hacking reasons: the home button interfaces directly with the enclave which is the security chip of the iPhone and so if you swapped out the home button for a cracking tool, you could hack into any iPhone.

Apple is doing the same thing to you on their end and other companies pay apple for the data they have the 30% apple tax. and every app you have installed on your apple Phone will have other ways of identifying you as well as continue tracking you and Facebook knows this. THIS IS A PR STUNT ! the question is "Is WSJ a part of the PR stunt or are they that clueless?"

Every time you add a barrier, you lose users - but that also means that those users don't get the benefit of whatever they wanted to have also. The internet runs on ads. As personalized ads become harder, everything will become more expensive (and many things will die out that people like having free access to). It's hard for people to appreciate the consequences of small wrong choices - made by millions and millions of people.

  • Another missing part is that this could be mostly a financial move for Apple. Basically removing ads will force more and more paying apps or subscription models, which an app is forced to implement with apple pay, which gives a 30% cut directly in Apple's pocket. The more appropriate fight is not facebook vs apple but more apple vs other apps maintained by smaller businesses that don't necessarily have the resources to adapt their apps
