Why I’m Leaving New York City

After living in Manhattan NYC for 20 out of 33 years of my life, I’m finally leaving. It’s where I grew up but I’m just done with it. It’s still one of the greatest cities in the world but the NY city and state government has utterly abused my trust and money, and public safety and infrastructure and the subway have gotten worse and worse, as has the government's handling of crime and the migrant crisis. It’s time to leave.

    • This is the magic of NYC. As if it was aseptic everywhere then there would be no point in traveling. NYC in the 1980s was even more "wild" and unpredictable. It was dangerous alby through it until it breathed freedom. And it was never a city for family people. That's what the other 99% of cities in the US are for. What sets NYC apart from other cities is, so to speak, the spirit of the old, free and crazy times (the 1970s and 1980s).

There are no disruptions. There are no fights. There are no murders. There is no National Guard equivalent. People are nice to each other, behave themselves, and have self-respect in equal measure. • I lived in NYC from mid-90s to 2022, now live in Singapore, and I think you are both missing some key points. It is true that Singapore is very clean, generally very safe (though they get their occasional crazies as well), and hyper-efficient (the MRT and the airport are stellar). Yet a recent poll showed that most Singaporeans would rather escape and live outside of Singapore, mostly due to the high cost of living and very narrow expectations and options. And despite ostensibly being multicultural Singapore is increasingly becoming homogeneous around Chinese culture. In contrast I found NYC's unabashed multiculturalism and acceptance to be its greatest strength, and what made it so much better than any other city. To live in NYC was always a challenge, even more so for immigrants and artists and entrepreneurs and dreamers - but that was a crucible that was common to everyone, and there was a pride and shared experience that I never detected in any other major city. I don't blame so-called "multiculturalism nonsense" (which reeks of the Midwest or South). Rather I blame the politicians and Democratic machine - not that I am anti-Democrat (Biden over Trump forever), but when one party becomes too entrenched then inefficiencies and corruption tend to follow. Guiliani is a madman now, but back in the 1990s he was the right person, as was Bloomberg after 9/11. NYC arguably needs a center-right mayor now.

    • Yes, and a beer in a mid-tier restaurant costs $18 SGD. Only rich people have privilege and enjoy life in Singapore. No place else on earth better demonstrates the negatives of late-stage capitalism than Singapore. It is a completely soulless place, worshipping money above all else.

      @krayziejman@krayziejman2 күн бұрын
    • I disagree. I've lived in both cities and SG is definitely not just for the rich. I have never seens homelessness in SG, I've never seen a drug addict here. Almost everyone lives in government housing and the social net for the poor is huge. The idea that SG is hyper capitalist is stupid, most firms are largley owned by the SWF and the state controls the econony waaaay more than its comparators. Alcohol prices are about the same as london due to taxes but food is waaaay cheaper! It is easy to eat healthy here. You don't ever see morbidly obese people who can't afford vegetables for instance

There were many small shops throughout the city where they could find the art materials (and all kinds of odds and ends) to create original work. Artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Louise Nevelson, Joseph Cornell, Jasper Johns were able to take advantage of that affordable climate. Today's NYC is a constant stimulus but the highly creative atmosphere of earlier decades is completely gone. Even by the time that Basquiat and Keith Haring were doing their thing the city was becoming a difficult place.

  • @xiaomanyc I’m so sorry to hear that the once beautiful and so multi-cultural city of New York has come to this. It is truly a sad state of affairs. Our family hails from Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia,Canada and unfortunately we are experiencing the same things here. Our provincial government years ago decided that our mental institutions were costing too much to maintain, thus sending many people with mental issues to the streets making it unsafe for them and us as well to live in a normal society. And to add to the pot, our Federal government also decide that decriminalizing hard drugs would help all the people with substance abuse. To me, it just escalated the problem. It is sad to say that for a young family like yours, trying to find that fun loving childhood that you once experienced is getting harder and harder to come by. Our own son who lives in the picturesque city of Victoria says he has to scope the area of the playground to make sure there are no needles or drug paraphernalia scattered about before he will allow his 4 year old and 17month old to play on it. Like how has it come down to this? My hope is to see that they will bring back the institutions to help these people who can no longer survive without assistance and make the streets more safe. One day…. On a side note, thank you for the very educational and entertaining videos that you put out. We love your work. All the best to your new home! They weren't great, they had their problems, and it's easy to cheer for Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, but so many of those people can't care for themselves and needed to be in hospitals for their own safety, for everyone's safety (and hygiene). There were always many mentally ill people (maybe ore than most cities!), but when things got bad they got help.

  • This is quite common in the US -- it's citizens (regardless of which party is in charge), have no idea where their taxes are applied to. The US Media always harps on us Europeans (UK/GM) paying up to 40% of our taxes to the Government - this is true. What isn't reported to the American Public, is that we SEE where our tax dollars go to. The London Subway (Tube) is constantly being upgraded and is far more cleaner than NYC's by any means. Our crime rate is far lower than the US and our social systems do provide for medical, shelters, welfare requirements. We, just like the US have many immigrants arriving and difficulties, but for whatever reason, I don't understand why American Citizens aren't informed by their local, state, and federal agencies to exactly how their tax dollars are being spent and to whose pockets it is going. There is NO reason for NYC to be paying that exorbant amount of money for ONE new subway station -- impossible. I hope the US Citizens get a better opportunity to hold it's leaders (in both parties and levels) accountable for spending issues as the current state appears unacceptable. With much love to the USA from Europe.

  • So Xiaoma is 33? He came of age mostly in the sanitized Manhattan of the 2000s/2010s. I'm also lifelong New Yorker (albeit Staten Island, but the North Shore, the more "urban" part, and commuted to school in Brooklyn/Manhattan as a teen/early 20s), so I came of age in NYC in the 1970s and 1980s/early 1990s, it was much worse in those days than it is now. It has been sliding back a little since the pandemic, but I think it is getting better. I ride the subways, and feel comfortable riding my bicycle/walking around Manhattan. Up to the early 1990s, there was always a palpable sense of risk, threat doing that, especially after dark, but I don't feel that way now. Of course I mostly work from home (hybrid schedule, only one day a week in the office) and I am out on Staten Island, but like I said, not all of Staten Island is super-suburban, I am in a more urban part, and I still ride the subways and venture into Manhattan and Brooklyn by public transportation frequently enough. Re the subway, yes, there's a lot of waste and high fares and costs, but remember also it is much older than the system in Singapore (built in 1987) and, while other systems like the London Underground are even older than the NYC system, only our subways run 24/7. So yes, lots of problems and room to improve but it is over a century old and runs around the clock, which makes maintenance more difficult. And again, you have to have lived here in the 1970s through early 1990s (I guess you were born in the late 1980s, but you're too young to remember) to appreciate how much it has improved compared to how bad it was then.

Crime is worse than it was before the pandemic, but NYC has seen a lot worse. Someone who grew up here or moved here or visited here only since the late 1990s or 2000s doesn't remember how bad it used to be for over two decades, from the early 1970s to mid-1990s. The problem, though, is at least in the bad old days of crime and chaos and decrepitude, the "Bronx is burning!",squatters, 1 out of 10 chance you'd be mugged after dark anywhere in the city, at least the city was affordable. My siblings rented in Manhattan for $300 in the 1980s, after college. (I myself paid less than a $1000 to live in Park Slope in the late 1990s and early 2000s.) Even adjusted for inflation in 2024 dollars, you could never find anything that cheap nowadays. So we have a bit of the crime of the old days (exaggerated as I think it is) plus the over-inflated gentrification prices of the 2010s/2020s.

But the people talking about how dangerous and threatening and bad it is now and that's why they have to leave are young or only moved here since the early 2000s. Of course it wasn't the absolute worst in those days either. They have to watch movies like "Fort Apache, the Bronx" or "Serpico" or "Midnight Cowboy" or "Kids" (that's about the skateboarding scene in the 1990s) to get a feel for it. • Relocating to Jersey instead of staying in NYC is interesting. Even though it's technically part of the NYC metro area, Jersey offers some distance from the city's jurisdiction. You're still close enough to see Manhattan and remain in the cultural hub, but with potentially more favorable policies and a lower cost of living. Some people are put off by the high taxes in NYC, feeling that paying over 50% is excessive. This ties into the broader debates around government financial policies and how the Democratic party has shifted further left compared to the centrist, pragmatic approach of the 90s. Both parties used to be more moderate, but now there's increased polarization. Because of this, some families are prioritizing their wellbeing by moving to red states with policies they see as more pro-business, lower taxes, and leaning 'hard right' rather than 'hard left'. Of course, red states also come with their own trade-offs like strong religious values, opposition to abortion, a tough-on-crime stance, support for the second amendment, and pushback against 'woke' culture. If you're considering such a move, just be aware you'd be exchanging one set of policies for another. Some would advise really reflecting on your personal values and voting preferences to avoid ending up somewhere you're still dissatisfied with the governance. It's a complex decision with pros and cons to weigh up. But getting a bit of distance from NYC while staying nearby could be a good middle ground for your content creation. Just something to think about... I love your videos!

  • We used to have mental institutions, but then it was decided that they were cruel. So now, they live on the streets. There's a middle ground, but we as a society can't seem to figure it out.

    • Nearly every city upstate has an abandon high rise 'state hospital'. Large buildings and think of all the crazy people they held at one time. Now the crazy people just wonder around, and scream at people, I didn't know why they were all closed, but you probably right, society thought it was cruel.

    • It’s more cruel to not care for these people, it was frankly far more cruel and idiotic to just let them live on the streets

    • Agreed. Its more cruel IMO to let people who NEED institutional care to just fend for themselves on the streets. Meanwhile the rest of us have to deal with them. It’s unacceptable.

    • If you watch old movies & cartoons, they often had memes about "calling the men in white coats" when someone was acting crazy. That came from the fact that we used to have an entire infrastructure for mental health care, including dedicated staff who would respond to mental health emergencies (rather than police), and facilities where the patients could be brought. (Those big state hospitals & asylums.) Unfortunately the care administered at such institutions ranged from "indifferent" to "sadistic". We had the infrastructure, but the techniques and understanding of mental disorders were lacking. Regardless, the Federal funding for such programs was cut bit by bit until it was finally ended entirely during the Reagan administration. That is why the mentally ill homeless population exploded in the 1980s and hasn't gone down since, and why there are so many abandoned mental institutions in every state. I've always wondered what we could accomplish if we had a mid-20th Century level of funding and dedicated infrastructure for mental health, combined with modern-day understanding of treatment. It wouldn't be perfect, but I'll bet it would be one hell of an improvement over our current strategy of "there is no strategy".

  • There is a saying I was told when I was younger, " you have to help yourself before you can help others ". America needs to take a step and we need to help ourselves for the next decade.

  • I was born in New York. I was raised in Long Island and I still live here. It is too expensive for what you are paying for… For a family I wouldn’t even stay close I would rather go to Florida, Texas, North Carolina… New York hasn’t been the same since before I was born lol. I saw videos of NYC in the 90’s and it looked like the movies. I think NYC is reflecting the state of our country right now… Scared for the future tbh.
