I worked at an outdoor mall here in the Bay Area which would unfortunately get hit thieves on a daily basis. It was out of control and it’d be so brazen, sometimes with stores being hit in the morning hours. At a certain point I realized the frequency it was happening was due to the 3-4 entrances and exits this mall complex had. I always thought “Man, if only this place had some barricades, then maybe it’d help these businesses.” I did some shopping for the first time in several months and what do I notice: barricades at two points of access, so what you essentially have now is one way in and one way out. Not sure if crime has been reduced drastically but this same mall has stopped making the news here in the area. I say this to suggest that maybe poor city planning and development can create a host of problems in how it correlates to crime; if a mall, or shopping complex, or any business can be left vulnerable then it’s really easy for criminals to make a clean and quick getaway. It’s also one of the many factors why the Westfield here in San Francisco closed: BART was right there on the lower concourse - of course thieves are going to capitalize on that.
Yeah, I'm in the bay area. East Bay. Lots of fentanyl addicts are moving to San Fran for a bigger variety of stores to rob. Then all they have to do is go around the corner to get fentanyl. They say people on both sides of the street stand on the sidewalk and come up to your car. Plus homeless in San Fran get 600 a month . Too many addicts were all robbing the same stores in the Concord area. They were getting in fights over which stores they claim as theirs. Lol I lived in Martinez worst neighborhoods for 5 years so I heard all the news and scams from the hood! Lol
@@kandycepeterson2482 Yep. I’m in the East Bay too. I wasn’t aware how complex these crime rings are but with the way things are right now I wouldn’t be surprised if this puts the nail in the coffin with brick and mortar stores entirely. It’s an absolute mess.

Singapore is built like this but every train station is a shopping Center. One thing is they are tough on crime. No matter how small the crime, the punishment is still enforced.

Whats the point having security in the store if they dont stop them stealing? Unchecked Criminality leads to the break down of society.
Society has already broken down. Just look around you!!!
They think the presence of a security guard will stop the thefts, but obviously the criminals know that security has no authority to stop them. It's like the border, when you see armed military men standing their with guns yet the illegals tear down razor wire right in front of them and storm in. The illegals know that cameras are there and if the border patrol stops them, politics has the illegals backs. Remember when the border patrol on horses was accused of whipping illegals, but not one pic or video showed that actually occurred? @@SPG8989 It happened here, in Bali, but she forgot that my country really hates burglars, and Bali has its own traditional police who are more strict than ordinary police and end up in jail for 2 years for not paying $70. It's not about black people, many of them were nice, but you can guess which country she is from :)
@@SPG8989 I live in a country which is 99% black. My neighbourhood is 100% black. We don't have such silly crimes.
@@SPG8989Culture is the issue. I live in an area where blacks and whites are very close because we struggle together, and our culture is southern hospitality.
You know your city’s laws suck when security can’t do a thing but watch him leave.
this just happened in San Francisco. I talking when I was there.. streets for block and block and block full of retail stores. Now.... ghost streets basically. This is ridiculous. And liberal states want to vote against gun rights? LMAO STUPID. so what? the "government" can protect us and be the only one with guns? Y'all better not be that stupid. I love my country but the government is NOT your country. They are their own entity. Lets keep it real.
All the states passing lighter laws on theft are being lobbied by Amazon/target/ Walmart to increase sales…. No store you buy online and the retailers make more $
Selling online and having fewer stores is FAR more profitable
why even hire a security to begin with?
I think this is nothing more than the NYC department of tourism trying to boost NYC tourism by emphasizing the equity and safety a tourist can enjoy while visiting the rotten apple.
Blue Doom ! San Francisco, St. Louis, New York City, downtown LA. Maybe coming to a city near you.
"Soft on crime" Interesting. Are the jails in New York empty, partially filled, at capacity, or over capacity?
Imagine our ancestors seeing how we treat thieves nowadays
do tell- which ancestors are you reffering to?🤔

As someone who lived and had a daughter working there, they ALWAYS had security! Including the National Guard because this IS Ground Zero and the back of the old World Trade Center! They expected issues there. He is showing both Fulton Mall and the Oculus. All the shops should sue the city for not dealing with criminals. If one is picked up they are back out on the streets the same day even for serious crimes! Insanity!
That's Because the Republicans refuse to Vote for a Bill to Fund Building Prisons. Yet they Bitch and Complain about Crime.
@@richardbirkenwald811Well at least they're prosecuting one criminal, they just need to extend that to all the street crime too
Wait, this is happening in the Financial District? Shoplifters now have the audacity to steal in the Financial District? I clicked on this video expecting this to be a working-class shopping area in an outer borough since those are the places that suffer from increased crime first (ask how I know).
I pray for our country. Our leaders need to make better laws to deter thieves.
What is this area like? Is it in a rough part of New York?
It’s very simple: don’t want to do anything about shoplifters? Then we take our business elsewhere. This is the direct result of indifference.
Diversity at it's best huh?
Demographics matter.
This is standard Democrat Party procedure. No police. Rampant crime. Dangerous thugs loose and skulking around everywhere.
The actual government make this happen, the same thing already happen in SF
You are correct!
Westfield is one of Australia's biggest companies and the biggest mall operator in the world. They have heaps of malls across Australia, Europe and Asia. They know a lot about running malls and clearly know when to pull out of a contract when there's no hope of getting a mall working.
@@Adrian-lc6jqyea it is , Scentre Group is based in Aussie
This should be #1 comment....it is telling the truth
and it's literally just 1 problem, crime, you have everything there. it's just the crime is the issiue
Yup. The Westfield Mall in San Fransicko, is gone too. Defaulted on their lease, & took their sign down, cue to crime & flash mob looting. The mayor there was giving a speech, in Union Square, about how safe it is. Someone threw a brick at her head, as she said it.
Agree with your intent, but as an Aussie, Westfield has not been an Australian company for some time, the Lowy's sold out to the french when they knew malls were a product of the past not the future.
The video is deceptive. This "mall" is primarily a subway station, not a shopping mall. Most of the stores are fast food places. It's not really a shopping destination.
We use to be allowed to take matters into our own hands. Now if we are to intervene we are charged with assault, fired from the job, or arrested instead. Its a joke

@@killman369547that's not true. Giuliani had this city rebounding in the 2000s
@@killman369547 Rudy G made NYC a tourist destination after years of crime and corruption under democrat rule. I watched the city die after he was gone. You're completely wrong. If Fulton Center fails to protect its businesses, that sounds like reason enough to break a lease
If I cannot do business there, what is my obligation to stay? Contract law (lease agreement) indicates both parties enter and act in good faith. My employees and merchandise are not safe--how can I be expected to run a profitable business and pay the rent?
Exactly! They’re trying to sue businesses for leaving, yet they cannot guarantee the businesses’ safe operation. In my opinion, Fulton failed them and has no ground to sue
I thought Fulton was supposed to be like grand central and penn stations …. A train/subway station with stores so people can shop while waiting for their transportation…
The Fulton Center is a transit hub FIRST and a shopping mall SECOND by design. The stores may close but they're not shutting down this crucial MTA connection point. Connecting 8 lines to 4 more lines plus PATH is massively important. One partial solution would be to have the PANYNJ purchase the Fulton Center from the MTA outright, with the MTA only being responsible for the stations themselves, as in the WTC mall. If the Port Authority owned the Fulton Center, it could fully integrate it into the WTC mall as a simple extension, with Westfield operating the entire expanded shopping center seamlessly and the Fulton portion being given the same high security as the Oculus portion.
