  • One of many reasons I love, and think WW1 was such a "cool" war, was the deep dive into the unknown of weapon and technology, like tanks. Not really that long ago, people were fighting with muskets, swords, and cannons. They now had to think outside the box_ fend off Big Bertha shells, fully automatic machine guns, and traverse craters of mud and debris.

    • Would’ve been a different thing from WW2 though. You got to remember, no real anti-tank weapons, no serious ground support aircraft, an extremely static battlefield... if a big slow heavy tank would ever perform well anywhere it would be on the western front in WW1

      @Icetea-2000@Icetea-20003 жыл бұрын
    • @@Icetea-2000 Keep in mind though that tanks were also incredibly basic. Armor was maybe half an inch thick if you were lucky, meaning basically any field-gun could probably penetrate it and a lucky artillery shell would knock it out, not to mention sustained machine gun fire especially in the right areas. Plus there's no replacement for a bunch of plucky infantrymen ambushing the tank and throwing a few grenades down the hatches. It's one of the reasons I think the FT was so copied and iterated upon as its rotatable turret made it easier to deal with infantry and it's small sized reduced hit probability for all those methods. Still even an early tank would've been a tough nut to crack, just not an impossible one seeing as the war went on for another 2 years after it's introduction without the western front, where they were all deployed, ever changing much.

      @TheRedKing247@TheRedKing2473 жыл бұрын
    • @@TheRedKing247 Yes, all of that is absolutely correct, I wasn’t saying that it was a great thing to do, just that it’s understandable. And also implying that they upgraded the armor enough to at least sustain machine gun and non-AP field gun fire, they could’ve made great bunker busters out of them (in those specific conditions of WW1). Of course, with infantry support. But engines were probably not powerful enough at the time. Also no suspension, meaning crossing the rocky terrain and trenches of no mans land would at best be extremely uncomfortable or at worst knock someone unconscious.

  • You can clearly see the landship/mobile bunker inspiration in several models, particularly 2:53, 5:49 and basically all others beyond that point on the video. Also, Oberschlesien seemed like a really sensible end efficient design, especially considering if the turret turns (I'm not sure looking at the model) and it's even better than some of the Italian tanks in WW2. Finally I'd love to see a completed Hetherington Armored Tractor in amuseum somewhere, it would trully be a sight to behold...

  • 3:23 fun fact about the whippet. It was used to great effect during world war 1, replacing the Calvary charge was it's primary duty. The male and female mk1-4's would break the lines, while these faster, slightly lighter tanks, came in behind them to clean up the mess. They did well. On one occasion, a single tank preformed so well, that they went deep into german lines, even past the mk1-4's, aswell as their fellow whippets. Just lambasting germans along the way. They pissed the german soldiers off so much, thag when they finally got out of their tank due to a fatal malfunction from much combat, they got the shit beat out of them, almost half to death, until a german officer forced their soldiers to stop, and told them to treat these men with respect. Because they were only doing their job, just as they as german soldiers, did their's. Cool little piece of tank History. Edit: PLEASE IGNORE MY WW2 TYPO i meant to say ww1, and i flubed it up and didn't notice until 5 months later. I apologize for any confusion.
