There has never been an offshore powerboat racing throttleman like Steve Curtis, and there likely never will be. The son of famed United Kingdom-based Cougar Powerboats founder Clive Curtis and the current throttleman for the Class 1 Huski Ice Spritz team, Curtis claimed his first Class 1 world championship in Key West, Fla., when he was just 21 years old-making him the youngest racer to ever accomplish the feat. Curtis would go on to earn 20-plus world titles, the most recent of which was that of the 2022 Class 1 World Championship Series with driver/motorsports legend Travis Pastrana and the Huski team.
In 2014, Curtis tried his hand at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Central Missouri and, alongside Sheik Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani of Qatar, made a 244-mph pass on the mile-long course-a record unlikely to ever be approached, much less broken. The tip of the spear since the Powerboat P1-driven Class 1 resurgence began, Curtis, now 59 years old, has faced his share of challenges and even tragedy along his way to becoming offshore racing’s GOAT in a career spanning 35-plus years. This is his story. Buckle up, this is In The Lead with Steve Curtis.

  • I've wrenched on all kinds of stuff over 40-years, buy my true love has always been go fast boats. A Total dream job right here - I'd give anything to have an opportunity like this. There is a unique glory in being part of a professional organization that is focused, inspired, has the teammates to win and everyone is aligned for the mutual goal of delivering a better finish the next race than the previous one, it's the blend of raw power, cutting edge design work being put through the paces. It's the drive to be the best and work with the best. holding everyone to a standard and exceeding it even when challenges show up at the worst possible time. A team that wins and suffers defeat together is bound by a special bond that marine boat racing can only deliver. You guys are truly blessed. Be safe and kick ass out there.

  • Well Done. Great race story woven into an enjoyable 20 min. There is so much more to the story , Every race every event is a story in itself and if you are fortunate to meet Sir Steve buy him a lager and you may just be lucky enough to share a couple.

  • Great piece! Glad to see him still racing and the passion you see in his face when he talks. I met Steve back in the late 1980s in Miami. Always pleasant and smiling. I was fortunate to see him race. He was just as enthusiastic as he still is now. What a blessing to be able to do this as a living. Its what keeps you young!!

  • He might be the GOAT for Catamarans but Reggie Fountain and Don A are the goats of V Bottom racing. Don A for his innovation and Reggie for speed. I know Outerlimits holds the V Bottom speed record but it took Mike Fiore (RIP) a very long time to catch and surpass Reggie. Reggie was running 140 in 1995 which absolutely smoked everyone.

  • Great documentary I'm missing footage from when he raced in UIM Class One in Europe for Eduardo Polli's team (with Vincenzo Polli) against the Spelta's, Didier Pironi, Bruno Abbate, Fabio Buzzi, Stefano Casiraghi etc etc, as well as his more recent Cowes Torquay Cowes win But to also cover all that, the documentary would have to be a lot longer But again, great documentary I enjoyed watching it
