    • Plus he began MULTIPLE policies, both large and small (stopping coinage debasement, building walls, trying to unify the Empire under one God etc.), that men like Diocletian and Constantine would eventually become famous for. They all followed the dream of Aurelian and were probably inspired by him and men like Claudius II.

  • Aurelian was a beast. Why no movies of him yet?

    @rommelhtown@rommelhtown8 ай бұрын
    • I agree. I think most mainstream scholars in many historical circles over the centuries have glossed over the achievements of Diocletian in ending the Crisis of the Third Century (many schools simply mention Aurelian briefly for less than a min & largely forget his successor Emperor Probus by going immediately to Dicletion because he was like their George Washington) and that many filmmakers (mainly Hollywood) tend to focus more on the very controversial & almost evil tyrannical emperors in Roman history. (though it's much deeper than most think) You have Julius Caesar through many media forms (because of Ending the Republic}, Crassus in the Spartacus TV show because he's hungry for wealth & power, the transfer of power from Marcus Aurelius to the flawed emotional Commodus (which many people debate on) in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, Caligula & Tiberius's story through Netflix's Rome/The Barbarian series, and the list goes on. The most underrated & good emperors like Aurelian always get forgotten by the "expert" masses because of the narrative set by the primary institutions that more or less likely see Roman civilization as morally black than one of the greyest stories of humanity's upbringing & the further development of Western Civilization.

    @justlolit@justlolit8 ай бұрын
    • Not particularly. If he would have lived 5 years. HE would have died; Diocletian more than likely would have still ruled. and history would roughly be about the same. Prolonging the fall by having Majorian live for 10-20 years more than he did would change more. He could have retaken Africa, and reduced and reaffirmed the empires Authority over Every province. His reign would also add stability which the empire so desperately needed at the time. given that stability, the empire may have fell 50-70 years in the future. or 30 (496-540 or so) that alone would throw so many developments off into future. The franks if they took over, could have been unable to stop the Muslims. etc etc. Majorian, with his help extended the life of the empire by about 5-10 years. Ricimer if he was killed. the empire in the west would have remained, but as a figurehead.

    • I agree. During the battle of Emesa, Aurelian's cavalry continued to fight furiously despite being poorly routed from the battlefield by Zabdas's heavy cavalry while the Aurelian was with the legions against the Palmyra infantry. Like Julius Ceaser, he gambled on sending back some of his infantry to help the retreating cavalry despite the legion & himself being overwhelmed by the Palmyra army. Still, he had faith in the abilities of his men (particularly his veteran legions), who believed/had confidence in him as emperor. The resilience & discipline of Aurelian's troops against the odds was nothing short of a miracle for the Romans. Elements of the legion had club-armed Palestinians who were highly influential in tight spaces against Zabdas's cavalry, which proved devastating for the Palmryne heavy armored men.

  • Aurelian got more done in five years than a modern day President in two terms.

    @irish-italianintrovert.8600@irish-italianintrovert.86008 ай бұрын
    • Yeah, he did. Presidents in the modern age only have 12 to 24 months to do the actual real policy work for the people underneath an 8-year term, where most of it is stuck between almost 3-4 years of being either a lame duck period OR more intense negotiations/sacrifices with their political rivals to keep most of their agenda afloat while trying to ensure their house of representatives or Congress was on their party's side during midterms, etc. Aurelian's short yet amazing reign was like having two different presidential administrations (16 years in total for US Presidents) in only 5 years alone amid his endless energy from crisis to crisis while bringing stability to the empire in the 270s. The same could be said of his successor Emperor Probus when he took over after Aurelian's death but tragically the corruption from Rome & hints of jealousy within the Roman ranks made their reigns short-lived.

  • This is one of the best videos about Aurelian. I hope that someone can replicate the efforts & filmmaking mastery of Director Ridley Scott to produce a series/film covering Aurelian's reign amid the Crisis of the Third Century. Aurelian's story has all the critical elements that made the Roman Empire truly unique in human history. Yet, it still highlights the same old corruption & power-hungry system that ended Julius Caesar, Aurelien, Probus, and many other emperors who died before their time. Some were necessary for Rome's benefit, but most were examples of how corruption guided the masses to eliminate good emperors that made the empire strong & unified.

  • This is really brilliant. I like the way that some opinions are marked with their dubious origins and only true incidents are given as fact. Such a short reign and to do so much in 5 years. Of all the Roman military leaders, he has to rank in the top 3.

  • Please keep the format and intro style in this video. If you do ever video like this: the intro short and voiced over by the main historical person of focus and then go into their history, it really keeps it interesting.

    • @@dieu7905 I wouldn’t say that, I would say good emperors deserve their time in the spot light, like nerva for example. But then there were great emperors who are never talked about. Like Aurelian. If there was any hope of Rome surviving the crisis of the 3rd century, it died with him. That is why he is worthy. I would say with the exception of maybe 10ish emperors, everyone else is a footnote.

WOW respect so much info and lore about this guy who ruled for barely 5 years incredible historic figure who is never covered in popular culture like Caligula or even Caesar no films only 1 notable doc which is also incredible considering the peplum genre. You have out done the Gallianeus video, love the presentation and graphics too. All your old videos should be revised in this new format
