I've compiled a reading list of my favourite history books via the Amazon influencer program. If you do choose to purchase any of these incredible sources of information then Amazon will send me a tiny fraction of the earnings (as long as you do it through the link) (this means more and better content in the future) I'll keep adding to and updating the list as time goes on:-

I try to use copyright free images at all times. However if I have used any of your artwork or maps then please don't hesitate to contact me and I’ll be more than happy to give the appropriate credit.
VIDEO MONETISED AGAIN! Thanks all for the kind words of support. After a long chat with KZhead the video was reviewed and found to not be controversial. The Fall of the Roman Empire is acceptable! Very relieved.
I’m still going to comment on the general thread too. Just not as pointed. 🧐
Regarding this video being demonitized, it could be bc it's a collaboration. Google will only pay one party, typically the 'bigger' channel. 🤷♂️ Hope that you can sort it out. Love your work. Cheers ✌️ 😎
Are you reviewing your videos after you upload them to KZhead? I don’t know how you are missing this, but the audio in every video you upload to KZhead is far, far too quiet. The problem is wildly apparent in each of your videos and makes you channel unwatchable. I’m one video away from unsubscribing because it’s extremely difficult to hear what you are saying. Right-click on this video and select “Stats for Nerds”. From there, you will see that KZhead measures the audio in this video as 11.8 dB too quiet. 11.8 dB is HUGE. A 5 dB deficit is very noticeable, which means your video at almost 12 dB too quiet is beyond unacceptable. In order to hear what you are saying, I have to blast the volume on my device. “That’s not a big deal.”, you say? Well sure, until the next video on KZhead plays and my ears are destroyed by the loud volume because the other creators know how to properly export their videos for KZhead. You really, really, really need to address this export problem with your videos because they are unwatchable as they currently stand. I don’t know what program you use to export video, but there is information out there for nearly every program that will help you achieve the proper export settings. For example, here’s a video about using Adobe Premiere: kzhead.info/sun/eqaBYKZ-rXWCdHk/bejne.html I beg you, please address this problem with your channels. Your content seems like it might be excellent, but any positive qualities of your videos is completely overridden by the inaudible narration. No one has any business subscribing to a channel where we cannot hear the videos.
@@burrito-town I've just compared the volume of the three most recent videos from this channel to the volumes of the latest three videos I've viewed from my library, each of these three are from different channels and one of them is from a popular news outlet. I found that the difference in volume was negligible with only the volume on the news channel being slightly higher than the other five videos. *That's my personal experience.
That was quick, I’m wondering why they did it in the first place. I guess I should have watched before ads.. 😀
My man, you need to submit yourself to Netflix or something so you can get yourself a show. Your content strategy, your ideas and their depth of investigation, your presentation, your voice and delivery, is all top quality
100/. Agree. !!!
Netflix doesn't deserve him. They would try to meddle with it and take a huge cut, pretending they contributed to its creation just because they own the distribution method. The future is independent cinema/documentaries like this, with no studio shoving their logo in our minds and stealing from artists.
Netflix can’t handle the truth! Pete is on another level of entertainment and knowledge! A true inspiration and teacher of history.
He just needs to make Caesar a black female trans lesbian and he’ll get a contract
They would literally ruin everything lol plus it’s free on KZhead
Was a pleasure editing this doc!
Lower thirds title typo @1:44 Mr. Editor!
1:01:55 - Using LARPer stock video? Really? The guy is wearing Jeans XD Come on....
Yep... we've all been fans of History Time from the beginning - extremely high quality scholarship and very thorough content. Thanks for helping out!!!
The prolonged Infomercial should have been in the middle or the end .... you lost us about 15 minutes in... poor editor's choices
@@melmee2235I suppose clicking ahead (which is your option if you don't want to hear the sponsor-pitch) was ... not possible? ... inconvenient? ... required lifting then lowering your index finger on the mouse? His "infomercials" as you call them are 1. in a pretty standard location for KZhead channels... after an introductory section... and a far more palatable "editor's choice" than letting KZhead invade the video with their choice of loud, likely barely relevant, pre-produced ads. Just sayin'... If you wanted to hear this documentary... you would not have been "lost" by his necessity to pitch for his sponsors.
I think about the Roman Empire about once or twice a week. Thanks in large part to History Time!
Everyday for me. Didnt know it was odd lol
Comments like this concern me to be honest. I unironically don't understand how it can't be at least once a day. If you live in China it's understandable maybe.
😂 I ❤️ this thread
I think most men do, don't they?
I think of Roman Empire every day since I was a kid. Seems strange some people don't think about it tbh.
Pete, many do history themed films, documentaries, indie shorts on every conceivable topic but you stand alone. Your manner, phrasing, passion for your material sets you apart and while I often wish you could pump one of these films out every week I know I'm talking rubbish. I retired from teaching (because of the lockdown) but when I did have classes I could never find a way to squeeze it all in about Rome, and oddly enough, the students always wanted more! This was worth the wait, as all your films are, there is no one like you in this field Pete Kelly!
I don't click on a lot about Rome anymore, but I have to watch everything Pete Kelley does.
Yep
Only after I read your comment, the first to appear, I decided to take a chance and watch this Roman documentary. Thanks!
That's a shame.
Me too
@sandrojones8068 I agree Everything Pete does is gold.
your videos are helping me beating my insomnia for years now. its the perfect amalgamation of a chill style of video, while still telling a cool and engrossing story. i love each and every one of your videos
I once went on a Majorian binge. I read EVERYTHING I could find about the guy, so I am really glad to see one of my favorite history channels covering the period he was in.
Majorian is one of my favorite Roman emperors. What titles about him would you recommend?
@@Tetricus01 There are few books about his reign specifically, so your best bet would be to search for works about the late 5th century Western Empire. I do remember his problems with Ricimer being adressed in "Late Roman Warlords" though.
Extremely well done. Very informative. I learned a lot about the final hundreds of years of Rome and realized I was born only 500 years after that great empire. History Time puts together solid content with great narration.
Are you 1500 years old ?
@@HeyemeyohstsEastern Rome died 1452.
@@wonderfalg You mean 1453! That's when the Ottoman Turks militarily invaded and captured Constantinople! Actually though, what the Turks captured was not Eastern Rome but Greek Byzantium! Enough with that false narrative!
@wonderfalg I don't count that. You can't call something Rome if they don't have Rome. They have been a part of the Roman Empire before, but they diverged when it fell
Slight error at 1:46 "Vandals Sack Rome - Title Text Here", might be too late to fix though
Honestly 1000 years of decline sounds like a great success, most countries that exist today are barely 100 years old
Yes, it is a great accomplishment. People can live good lives, safe lives even in a declining nation
Almost all european countries (except some small independent zones) are alot older than that. Portugal has near 900 years
Yes. And no recent empire has lasted for 1000 years. Even the mighty British Empire lasted less than 300 years.
Rome didn't die it turned into the rcc
@@brunomanco7529no, no they are not. Many have new constitutions. Does Portugal have a constitution and the same overall governmental sctructure as it did 900 years ago? Then it is not the same country. The language and blood of the country might not have changed by its style of governance and laws did.
I unabashedly and proudly think about Ancient Rome every day. Roma Aeterna!!
I do as well
Urbs Aeterna!! Greatest city on Earth.
Only 40 minutes in, but I can see that this is one of the best videos on late western Roman history
Editing is great and im glad you were able to lighten your own workload with outsourcing it to someone else. Im looking forward to the increase of content. 🎉
I love your channel and content. Such a good listen while working. Ive been subbed a long time and really appreciate your hard work. THANK YOU!
Im already excited to see what more Pete has coming our way 🤩 the new visuals are fantastic! Top tier 👑
I'm so glad to see you enjoying this as much as I do Pete, can't wait for what's to come. I'm a big fan of yours and your brother's work! Kudos from Italy (Rome actually 😅)
Just imagine if there wasn't all the internal backstabbing/treachery within the Roman state, how much longer the Roman Empire would have lasted? One can make the sound argument that "the fall of Rome" was not from any external enemy, but rather from the enemies from within... As duscussed in this video, even in Rome's collapsed state/end times, there were still chances to repair it yet internal treachery prevented it. In my opinion of civilizations and their collapse, it's more often due to "the fall from within" rather than any one great seige or battle. Most are wrongly taught and or have the impression of the later. Rome did not fall when the Visagoths and Vandals sacked the city, Rome fell internally long before those events. To further put into perspective, the exact same thing is happening today in Europe and especially in USA. History my friends does repeat itself because "history" is the psychology and repeatative actions of man.
Humans don't seem to learn from the past do they😢
Rome fell in 1453
I've been following you for more than a year now, and have consumed over 40 hours of your content. You are still my favorite history presentation channel on YT.
UPDATE - SITUATION RESOLVED. VIDEO DEMONETISED. Plot twist. KZhead has just disallowed ads on the latest video meaning it can't earn revenue and won't be shown to anyone in the algorithm. Apparently the fall of the Roman Empire is too much of a controversial subject. If anyone has any way of contacting KZhead to get this reviewed again or any ideas let me know. Absolutely gutted.
that's kinda funny, since I'm watching an ad while I try to watch this, they seem very concerned (with keeping the money for themselves with flimsy excuses).
I’m a DJ my mixes have nearly 1 million plays combined. I’ve never ever been able to monetise or get revenue for my content. Despite creating my channel, my mixes using dj skills that I’ve learnt over the past 20 years. Uploading videos, promoting and artwork. Apparently none of that counts because I’m playing music that commercially available so all proceeds go to the record labels and not a penny to me. The person who’s created the mix, video and drawn in revenue. I do it for the love of it. But it’s always bugged me. Welcome to the club. Hopefully they will reverse this for you. Not getting financial support while other content creators with the same watch time are absolutely sucks. Condolences. Please don’t delete or rage your content. Keep up the good work!
WHAT 😮
Fascists!
Why?
an editor would definitely be helpful for cranking out these massive documentaries, keep it up, can't wait to see more
Congratulations on growing your channel and expanding the team to allow more focus on content
Anyone who's interested in history should buy themselves a metal detector. Every time I found an old coin I read about the ruler that was on the coin and what they did what was going on in their time . Its surprising how many ancient things are a few inches under the soil . Ive found bronze age artifacts, iron age , Celtic, Roman, Saxon, medieval, Tudor etc.. Even if you live in a new country like the USA, i speak to people online who have found button's and military buckles from the war of independence and the civil war . Its a great buzz finding old things .
what does belong to the buttons?
Thanks Peter! I appreciate your hard work, your content is top quality as always ❤
That was a nearly an hour and a half incredible piece of work and passion Pete. A captivating journey indeed. Cheers!
Yaaay! A new video on the best YT channel ever. Doesn't matter what period of time or what geographic region it is about - it's a must-see
This was amazing, thanks heaps for this!
You do excellent justice to history, Pete. Love and respect that a lot. Thank you!
Thank you for pointing out the fallacy of Voltaire’s statement about the Holy Roman Empire; the institution of the emperor and concept of universal imperium meant that the emperor was viewed with great reverence as once of the most powerful monarchs in the world. This was true even by the time of Voltaire, by which point, as he so crudely points out, the empire had become quite disunited - even at that stage the Habsburg Holy Roman emperors held enormous sway over international geopolitics, even if beginning their long, slow decline which ended in their deposition in 1918.
Especially the early Ottonian period marks a high water mark in the Power of the Holy Roman Empire and the Emperors Power at the time in Western Europe which is often overlooked.
1918? Please explain genuine interest
@@benhudson4014 the last Habsburg emperor, Karl I, was deposed in the fall of 1918
Yes Pete!! Love your channel. Thank you for another brilliant video
Truly excellent - as always! Thank you!
Omg I love Maiorianus, definitely the best Roman history channel
Same here
Me and your video editor have the same last name, I was shocked to hear it out loud it’s rather uncommon. Great video!
Given how frequently us men spend time thinking about the Roman Empire, it's a wonder that we have any time to watch a documentary about it.
Great work very informative and entertaining!
Love the non-hysterical, calm delivery and phrasing of this documentary, just letting the incredibly dramatic events speak for themselves whilst respecting the intelligence and comprehension skills of your audience makes this a really exceptional piece of work for me. Have subscribed and looking forward to binging the rest of your content. Thank you for your hard work.
Well said sir.
Great work! It’s refreshing to to see correct history being used for the Eastern Roman Empire as well.
It is anti-historical to call the Greek Byzantines "Romans"!
Nice video. I always wondered why teachers at school would say that the roman empire ended in 476 when it would have been much better to say 1453, being the empire did not shutdown and get recreated as the Byzantine empire and the people called themselves Roman although they had lost the city of Rome. Maybe one could consider these last holdouts around the Black Sea.
Thanks for your service Editor Damiano!
Superb, clear, concise, and eminently accessible. One to watch or add to your saved list.
your videos are pure art. thank you
Great job Pete! Great to hear you have an editing relationship with Damiano now, it was a terrific show! Looking forward to watching more history productions!
Boethius is well known to students of literature for his "The Consolation of Philosophy" which he wrote while awaiting execution. Truly amazing human being.
This is one of the great channels for history. As a lover of Roman history and the old Roman Empire I am glad to be here. Thank you!
Thanks mate you deserve more for the hard work
Baller
In many many ways, I get the idea that Rome only morphed and mutated. But it's still around.
Love your content! Been watching your videos for a long time and you never disappoint
Magnificent documentary. There are several good resources on Rome on KZhead but this one is one of the best.
How could you NOT think about the Roman Empire every day?
I think about it at least 5 times a day. They say you need your 5 a day after all.
Honestly I wonder the same!
be a woman
Your videos are excellent for use in History studies classes. Thank you for making them. I don't understand why they would be demonetized. I watch them at night hoping something will sink in while I sleep.
This was just brilliant! Kudos to you, yoiung master. So well researched and written. And let us nor forget your beautiful both soothing and compeling voice. I will share this along my nieces and nephews channels.
Fascinating content 😊. Thank you 😊.
Very well done! 👏 Thanks, Pete. 👊😎
SUBBED Neat to see the face behind that Epic Voice! Ive always really enjoyed your style of story telling. Very well done!
Love this channel. Great work
Learned new information from this video. Thx
Gonna make my girl watch this after asking me how often I think about it!
What is up w that I’ve been hearin that a lot
Something on tiktok l think.last week the wife filmed me and asked how many times a month l think of the roman empire. I went a low 4 times.
Wow I'm surprised it's taken you so long to get an editor. You vids are massive, a researcher or two would probably be useful on some of the obscure/specific episodes (thinking local expert, or someone digging through the archives). Not because you're work isn't top notch, rather your vids are massive the work involved is insane. And selfishly I want more content. 😂
Wow thak youu so much! Love to listen to your documentaries and refresh my knowledge
Great video!
Congratulations on the monetization. You create amazing content and deserve to be paid for it. Hello from Tokyo. :) I would love to see a video from you based on the history of Japan. There are many videos about Japanese war history but it might be worth focusing on a different aspect of the history here.
Yeah some Japanese and also Chinese history is needed.
Yes!!!! Very much excited❤
Great video, fascinating period in time.
God bless you brother happy you’re doing well
Pete and company are going to double the output of History Time videos? OK, yeah sure, sounds good. What am I saying? Not just yes...but Hell Yes!
Latin alphabet, months, days of the week, roman architecture and roman law (not in aglo saxon countries with common law) is still present in the West.
I've had relationships where it seemed as if it took a thousand years for them to end
Much appreciation from Malaysia. As usual, well researched and well told. The voice and tempo is perfect. Thank you
I think Constantine XI sounds like a worthy bearer of that title
A state that lasted 2,000+ years, from the 7th century BC to the 15th century AD. Roma aeterna ❤️
Imagine how short lived if inflation had sent home prices soaring 50-100x over in less than a century.
Still alive today. Look at american currency. One dollar bill and quarter
Wow, I subscribed yesterday after finding the Bronze Age Collapse video, who would’ve thought I’d catch a new upload.
Great idea to collaborate on this topic.
Great overview in general and extremely entertaining, but I'm surprised Gemistos Plethon was not on this list. Surely he's a claimant to the title "last of the Romans" as he was the last great philosopher of the Greco-Roman tradition? Really see his writings and ideas as an important (arguably the most important) bridge between the Eastern Roman world and the Renaissance. He's very worthy of the title "last of the Romans".
Actually, Sponsianus (Sponsian in Eng. sources) was the last person to be discovered and added to the list of known Roman emperors. So he, too, deserves to be called the last Roman. 😅
Good 👍🏿 job on the research 🔬 and hard work
You are brilliant!
History time is my favorite time 😊
I love History ❤️
There's a guy that lives a few blocks down from me and he apparently he is a very good bread maker, but he has a bakery and his bread is often compared to some of the best bread that there is around because he makes his bread in the old fashioned that still appeals to people. He is often called the last Roman. All joking aside, this documentary is amazing
Honoured to see this video about our roman past edited by a fellow italian. Congratulazioni, Damiano!
So long as an emperor ruled in Constantinople the Roman state was a flickering candle of greatness in an increasingly dark world
Pete, thank you so much for a complete view of the totality of the Roman Empire and how it played out after the fall of the Western and ultimately Eastern in it's former territories as new empires rose after it.
A long video about a historical topic, with proper human narration and music, with still photos, graphics and dramatised scenes 👍👏👌 I'm new/new-ish to the channel, having seen either a community post or having come across a video in the next suggested video so we sort of have to thank KZhead for this. But knowing that this video was initially demonetised meant that someone either carelessly clicked a button or just thought it was just a simple war video with lots of gore and violence so definitely no thanks to KZhead. Highly unfair to those who rely on KZhead for income and having their videos be pushed less by the algorithm and having less exposure Back to watching!
Enjoying your videos
Why is Pete dressed like he's in the witness protection program?
I can't talk about it
Title Text Here
Exactly what i wondered about. Excellent. Difficult topic. Maybe you can do videos of each of those leaders. More info. Battles. Food. Whatever you cam dig up. No matter did a good job on topic. And can you tell me what your accent is from? A smooth relaxing hypnotic voice. You da best. Beard or not
Thank you for your excellent work! Very entertaining and informative.
Saxons! They were the real Dark Age badasses….Nobody had better helmets or martial decor during their time…best governance ideas too, Not keen on the Christian conversion but it was a trend back then so part of their era inguess
mom said it's my turn to be the last roman
We have the last Roman at home.
The empire continued for another 1000+ years in the Eastern Roman Empire. On a side note, Ricimer, Olympius, Honorius and Valentinian III have a lot to answer for. Stilicho, Majorian and Flavius Aetius, you did colossal work to try and save the Roman Empire.
Constantine XI Dragases Palaiologos is the last Roman emperor. The last Roman emperor that was born in Rome, a true Roman, was Anicius Olybrius. 11 July - 2 November 472. After this point, Rome was not governed by natives.
Fuck yes you historical wizard
This was amazing. You’ve got a new subscriber ❤
Wow this was legit! Instant subscribe! It’s 100% correct that as American historian John Fiske said back in the 19th century, Rome crippled along in Europe as the Catholic ‘Holy Roman Empire’ until by the early 1800’s “it was neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire” - Voltaire. John Fiske literally considered the final nail-in-the-coffin for the ancient Roman system the same century he himself lived in as an academic in Boston! The Roman system sustained itself on life support through all the medieval kings and popes that slowly rebuilt civilization in the shadow that was the Roman Empire.
How often do you think of rome?
once today
Most days, I live opposite one of the biggest ancient Roman city's in Britain ( Verulamium)
Western Roman Empire?
Rome was devided between Western Rome and Eastern Rome when Rome collapsed eastern Rome became the Bysatine empire
Yep, Constantine made Istanbul the capital of the eastern empire, ( he called it constantinople)
Please tell me this is trolling.
Top tier content - I love watching and rewatching. Fantastic !
Amazing work
If anyone's particularly interested in the subject I strongly recommend Schwerpunkt's videos series, in particular the Late Antiquity and Migration Era playlist. That's A LOT of deep stuff and terribly insightful analysis of every single political, military and social factor in literally hundreds of videos, often segmented according to region, century, etc. It's all a much more complex thing than usually depicted but this channel seems to me the one that makes sense of it the best way.
He is excellent. Almost TOO prolific, though. I subscribed to his account and was inundated by a near daily hour+ video, I have no idea how he maintains that level of output.
Obvious intentional plug. Probably from dudes own alt account.
@saintjacques8137 it's pretty shitty to come to a channel and simply direct the audience elsewhere. I have seen your comments on other videos saying the same shit. If the owner of this channel wanted to provide a plug, they would. If people are interested in this subject and want more content, they will find it. Shame
@@Bambam-sz6id🙏
@@Bambam-sz6id I can assure you gentlemen that I am not an alt for Schwerpunkt, given that I clearly stated that he produces too much for me. I turned off the ringing bell icon for his account. I quite prefer Pete Kelly - however, I don't see why someone saying 'also, if you are interested there is another account that produces cool things' is a problem.
