I've compiled a reading list of my favourite history books via the Amazon influencer program. If you do choose to purchase any of these incredible sources of information then Amazon will send me a tiny fraction of the earnings (as long as you do it through the link) (this means more and better content in the future) I'll keep adding to and updating the list as time goes on:-

  • VIDEO MONETISED AGAIN! Thanks all for the kind words of support. After a long chat with KZhead the video was reviewed and found to not be controversial. The Fall of the Roman Empire is acceptable! Very relieved.

    • Are you reviewing your videos after you upload them to KZhead? I don’t know how you are missing this, but the audio in every video you upload to KZhead is far, far too quiet. The problem is wildly apparent in each of your videos and makes you channel unwatchable. I’m one video away from unsubscribing because it’s extremely difficult to hear what you are saying. Right-click on this video and select “Stats for Nerds”. From there, you will see that KZhead measures the audio in this video as 11.8 dB too quiet. 11.8 dB is HUGE. A 5 dB deficit is very noticeable, which means your video at almost 12 dB too quiet is beyond unacceptable. In order to hear what you are saying, I have to blast the volume on my device. “That’s not a big deal.”, you say? Well sure, until the next video on KZhead plays and my ears are destroyed by the loud volume because the other creators know how to properly export their videos for KZhead. You really, really, really need to address this export problem with your videos because they are unwatchable as they currently stand. I don’t know what program you use to export video, but there is information out there for nearly every program that will help you achieve the proper export settings. For example, here’s a video about using Adobe Premiere: kzhead.info/sun/eqaBYKZ-rXWCdHk/bejne.html I beg you, please address this problem with your channels. Your content seems like it might be excellent, but any positive qualities of your videos is completely overridden by the inaudible narration. No one has any business subscribing to a channel where we cannot hear the videos.

    • @@burrito-town I've just compared the volume of the three most recent videos from this channel to the volumes of the latest three videos I've viewed from my library, each of these three are from different channels and one of them is from a popular news outlet. I found that the difference in volume was negligible with only the volume on the news channel being slightly higher than the other five videos. *That's my personal experience.

Your manner, phrasing, passion for your material sets you apart and while I often wish you could pump one of these films out every week I know I'm talking rubbish. I retired from teaching (because of the lockdown) but when I did have classes I could never find a way to squeeze it all in about Rome, and oddly enough, the students always wanted more! • Just imagine if there wasn't all the internal backstabbing/treachery within the Roman state, how much longer the Roman Empire would have lasted? One can make the sound argument that "the fall of Rome" was not from any external enemy, but rather from the enemies from within... As duscussed in this video, even in Rome's collapsed state/end times, there were still chances to repair it yet internal treachery prevented it. In my opinion of civilizations and their collapse, it's more often due to "the fall from within" rather than any one great seige or battle. Most are wrongly taught and or have the impression of the later. Rome did not fall when the Visagoths and Vandals sacked the city, Rome fell internally long before those events. To further put into perspective, the exact same thing is happening today in Europe and especially in USA. History my friends does repeat itself because "history" is the psychology and repeatative actions of man.

Despite creating my channel, my mixes using dj skills that I’ve learnt over the past 20 years. Uploading videos, promoting and artwork. Apparently none of that counts because I’m playing music that commercially available so all proceeds go to the record labels and not a penny to me. The person who’s created the mix, video and drawn in revenue. I do it for the love of it. But it’s always bugged me. Welcome to the club. Hopefully they will reverse this for you. This was true even by the time of Voltaire, by which point, as he so crudely points out, the empire had become quite disunited - even at that stage the Habsburg Holy Roman emperors held enormous sway over international geopolitics, even if beginning their long, slow decline which ended in their deposition in 1918.

I always wondered why teachers at school would say that the roman empire ended in 476 when it would have been much better to say 1453, being the empire did not shutdown and get recreated as the Byzantine empire and the people called themselves Roman although they had lost the city of Rome. Maybe one could consider these last holdouts around the Black Sea.

There are many videos about Japanese war history but it might be worth focusing on a different aspect of the history here.

  • Great overview in general and extremely entertaining, but I'm surprised Gemistos Plethon was not on this list. Surely he's a claimant to the title "last of the Romans" as he was the last great philosopher of the Greco-Roman tradition? Really see his writings and ideas as an important (arguably the most important) bridge between the Eastern Roman world and the Renaissance. He's very worthy of the title "last of the Romans".

  • Actually, Sponsianus (Sponsian in Eng. sources) was the last person to be discovered and added to the list of known Roman emperors. So he, too, deserves to be called the last Roman. 😅

He is often called the last Roman. All joking aside, this documentary is amazing

  • A long video about a historical topic, with proper human narration and music, with still photos, graphics and dramatised scenes 👍👏👌 I'm new/new-ish to the channel, having seen either a community post or having come across a video in the next suggested video so we sort of have to thank KZhead for this. But knowing that this video was initially demonetised meant that someone either carelessly clicked a button or just thought it was just a simple war video with lots of gore and violence so definitely no thanks to KZhead. Highly unfair to those who rely on KZhead for income and having their videos be pushed less by the algorithm and having less exposure Back to watching!

  • Wow this was legit! Instant subscribe! It’s 100% correct that as American historian John Fiske said back in the 19th century, Rome crippled along in Europe as the Catholic ‘Holy Roman Empire’ until by the early 1800’s “it was neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire” - Voltaire. John Fiske literally considered the final nail-in-the-coffin for the ancient Roman system the same century he himself lived in as an academic in Boston! The Roman system sustained itself on life support through all the medieval kings and popes that slowly rebuilt civilization in the shadow that was the Roman Empire.

  • If anyone's particularly interested in the subject I strongly recommend Schwerpunkt's videos series, in particular the Late Antiquity and Migration Era playlist. That's A LOT of deep stuff and terribly insightful analysis of every single political, military and social factor in literally hundreds of videos, often segmented according to region, century, etc. It's all a much more complex thing than usually depicted but this channel seems to me the one that makes sense of it the best way.
