Don't forget to like, subscribe, comment etc and why not share with a like minded friend. Where would you like to see me go and film next once it's a bit easier to travel? Thanks for watching and see you next time
Thanks for your work!
I have bounced numerous speculative theories around as to who the "sea peoples" were, including labeling them as proto-Mycenaeans. The Bronze Age collapse is one of the most interesting, esoteric parts of human history. Very much looking forward to this!

I'm a professional archivist and historian, originally specialized in the Ancient Near East. You managed to tell the story using solid, established scholarship while also bringing in some of the newer stuff as well without falling off the horse on either side. That is very difficult indeed and it is quite an achievement. This would get the highest marks in any MA program in the US. Very well done.

I'm a camera guy professionally and so don't really have a reason to be here. Doesn't mean I need one! The history of man kind and the things people have revered, the wars fought over resources or beliefs, the diversity of people's origins, and the ideas traded throughout... these things give context and with that a certain objectivity. At least for me. When non historians argue about who's land belongs to them, who's religion is correct, who's ideas are worthy, I like to look back at topics like the one covered in this video for some truth behind the matter. Or at least a step closer to truth than uneducated, radical claims so common in today's world. Bravo, well done, this video was beyond excellent!
This man could single handedly revive the History channel
We need it.
What? You don’t like Ancient Aliens? Or the lip service to both World Wars?
They should rename it to the Cryptozoology channel.

I know, right? He didn't even mention aliens a single time either.
I cannot believe you did all this on your own. This is on par with professional production. The sound design is so nostalgic, reminiscent of early 2000s documentaries, and the amount of information you put into this is astounding! I'm so glad you didn't give up on this, it's an impressive feat! Keep doing this please, you're a treasure to have around.
The nostalgia and overall flow of the cinematic historical data is on par with the history Channel. I can't stop watching it. The kind of education that we need, no opinion, no bias. Historical education based in factual data. The lack of such bias that unfortunately goes along with all types of knowledge based in fact makes it all the more impressive that an individual created it alone. It's spectacular.

Your videos are amazing, History Time! I've been studying the peoples of the ancient Mediterranean for several years now, primarily focused on the Etruscans (Tyrrhenians/Rasna/Rasenna) and their origins. I'm in no way a professional, but the Etruscans have fascinated me for over 15 years; so much so that I now have a sizable library dedicated to them. Your videos, especially this one on the Sea Peoples, gives all the various peoples of the area, of unknown or debated origins, their fair share of exposure and consideration. Thank you for all your hard work and may the ancient historians guide you through your journeys.

@@Sailrjup12nh “Phoenicians” (Φοινικες) is an Ancient Greek designation for the Canaanites that enters into the archaeological record immediately after the Bronze Age collapse. How the “sea peoples” may have assimilated into the region historically termed “Canaan” by the neighboring ancient Egyptians and Hurrians is a matter of debate among modern historians.
I hardly knew anything about the bronze age collapse other than that there was one, and "the sea people" had something to do with it. This was a very detailed, informative video - thanks to you I now know quite a bit more about this pivotal period in history. Thank you!

The History Channel, Discovery Channel, etc., should be paying you for the rights to air your documentaries. It’s the least they could do, since they seem to have no interest in producing their own quality content anymore.
No they shouldn’t. In fact they should stay the fuck away as corporations have a tendency of ruining just about anything given enough time. Plus, videos like this prove that you don’t NEED a network like that anymore.
@@NathanCassidy721 Never said he needed them. Actually was stating the opposite. And paying for the rights to air isn’t the same thing as having him produce for them. Channels pay for the rights to air movies all the time, they don’t have creative control of those movies, so they can’t really ruin them.
@@censoreverything8072 Fair enough but I would bet money that it wouldn't stop at trying to buy the rights to broadcast. TV execs tend to want to control than cooperate. But even with your suggestion, which I missed the point on initially admittedly, it's not necessary nor needed. Not that many people watch TV networks outside of sports when you can just pull up Netflix or KZhead and look for what you want to watch. And even those that do know that most of the best stuff is usually behind subscription streaming services nowadays so there wouldn't be much of a point of putting it on Discovery or History when there are better options, like say Curiosity Stream.
Haha yup, youtubers are producing better content than the history channel and other television networks.
I was actually thinking the same thing the other day!! It would be nice for the history channel to do actual historical content but this 2 hour doc would be over 10, 30 min episodes with ad breaks every 5 min and then a 2 min recap when you get back from break. So yea fuck that

The ancient vikings, before we knew them as vikings

He does RW !
One of the key events that triggered the famines and collapse: ~1600 BCE - Santorini Volcano Eruption. Santorini (Thyra) lies North of Crete, so is surrounded by the Greek and Hittite empires, with the Egyptians a bit further away. The ash clouds would cause famine all around, people would fight for the remaining food, society collapses and it gets worse, then they use any means (e.g. boats) to flee far away to other lands to pillage for food/new land, hence "the sea peoples" are born.
I reckon the Sea Peoples came from everywhere, and went everywhere. Climate change reduced food abundance, and (as you put it) martial cultures migrated to seek food elsewhere causing a domino effect throughout the Mediterranean. Add to that the advent of Iron Age weapons, and the staid defenses of the old empires couldn't endure.
I can’t believe this is a one man operation. You, sir, are incredible. How I wish I’d had this documentary when I was taking a course on ancient Egypt. The professor spent about two minutes on the Sea Peoples and even in my ignorance, I knew there had to be more! This is one of those mysteries that traverses time and is inescapably fascinating. It blows my mind that one man is producing these amazing documentaries, and that he does it on such a frequent basis. The amount of research that goes into these videos must be immense. I don’t know how he does it.
@@sa_exploder I was thinking the same, after I made this post I went and looked at fellows upload schedule and was shocked how often he puts out videos of equal quality. Here I am trying to drag my ass out of bed and it takes me 3 hours to make a fucking cup of coffee, this fellow might have two videos done by then :D

When you start looking at one age you almost have to continue with the remaining parts. thank you for producing this history.
Excellent work. This is for KZhead what *Will Durant* and his works *The Story Of Civilization* and *Our Oriental Heritage* was for books
My favourite bit was the line about the Pharos winning all their battles progressively closer to home.
In the Odyssey, Homer writes that Menelaus obtains a large treasure from Egypt on the way home from the Trojan war. He also recounts a curious story told by Odysseus to the swineherd when he first arrives back in Ithaca. Disguised as a beggar, Odysseus tells the swineherd that he was from Crete and had taken part in an attack on Egypt that sounds uncannily similar to the Egyptian inscription. It appears that Homer knew something about the sea people.
From what I remember from reading Homer, it seems very likely that he is describing the bronze age collapse. During the 10 year siege of Troy about 1/4 or the supposedly 100k Mycenaeans were off raiding and conquering other places for months at a time before returning to the beaches of Troy to change places with other soldiers who would in turn go out raiding
@@alexdunphy3716 Yes. The Iliad states that Achillies with the Myrmidons and other Achaeans had sacked many cities prior to the incident which was the subject of the Iliad. There were likely many other related stories that have been lost.
@@alexdunphy3716 I'm not disputing the core of your comment, but it may be worth noting that 10 year figure given as the length of the siege of Troy (or, indeed, the exploits of Odysseus) is inaccurate--although I can't say by how much. To my understanding, it tracks with a popular turn of poetic phrase "9 times and then a 10th", which was used in Homer's time to convey that a task had been quite arduous and required many attempts, even if the actual number had been greater or lesser than exactly 10. In which case, what the commentary on the siege tells us is not necessarily that it took 10 actual years, but rather that it took a very long time by the reckoning of the people of the day.
Very true. In my opinion, the sea peoples were mainly mycenaean warriors turned pirates after the collapse of the palaces. Ramses III says they attacked Arzawa, Alashyia, Hatti, Kode, Karkamish. But not Tanaya or Caphtiu, that's how they called Greece and Crete. Maybe because they WERE from Tanaya and Caphtiu. The greek palaces seem tô have been the first domino tô fall. Then all hell broke loose. Also Ramses III says the sea peoples set up a camp in Amorru and devastated the area for years,. Seems a lot like the trojan campaign, where the greeks set up a camp and sacked everything Worth talking until nothing else lasted there tô loot.
Homer,or most likely the vardes ,the storytellers ,that compose with their own patches the two epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are doing their best to illuminate through narratives the darkness of the upheaval that brought the Dark ages upon their world,of which memories are more recent than the
I need to tell you that as an university educated person on this era, that you have been able to find photographic and other primary source examples to back up your hypothesis in a more scholarly fashion than the likes of more renown historians and archeologist such as Eric Kline. Congratulations.
brilliant. well made and held my interest the entire way. a nice video to see to learn more before the new Total War game!
Also, this is the only channel I've seen on KZhead that has the talent to make the still image of an ancient map be compelling and engaging, bravo. Not only can you teach, but you can also entertain.

I am amazed this is a one person show! It's impressive, give this guy a YT Award for hustle and grind! Great work on this channel.
The craziest part about this era to me is people established a trade network that spanned from England to Aghanistan, more than 1200 years before Alexander was born and 1500 years before the Silk Road really got going. It must have been scary for some of those daring traders venturing through the unmapped world.
It wasnt unmapped. This shit's been going on for a long time
haha, no they did not fear much at all.
@@BOBANDVEG you could NOT have had accurate maps back then be real. Just look at the maps from 500 years ago. You would have needed an extra horse to carry a bunch of smaller and less reliable maps to maybe have a good image. A lot of it is peoole passing on the trade to their kids. Same path for lifetimes.

I think, after watching most of this, don't worry, I am most certainly going to watch it all, that you have rather uncovered a new line of thinking. There was no ONE sea people. It was more a thing, that happened over different times with numerous "Sea People". A bit like the Vikings many years later, except these early ones didn't unite. I never knew there were so many contenders! Yes, traders would logically (but not obviously) have taken on board people who could speak different languages, as well as the one (s) the captain spoke, and thus extend their trading scope. Brilliant! Thank you once again!
in so many ways, you blow Paul Cooper's content away, particularly om this topic!

The tribe of Dan was part of the Israelite nation that came out of Egypt during the Exodus. There’s plenty of information about the battles between Israel and the Canaanites and the Hittites, peoples that you mention here in this video. I enjoyed it, unfortunately there’s so much of history that’s been lost to us regarding the past of the world. The movies that could be made would be extraordinary if we had that information accurately. Great job.
I first learned about the sea peoples through The Elder Scrolls lore. Elves, I hear.
Sounds like Vikings 2000 years before Vikings
The Washesh and the early runic writing and the seemingly naval raiding culture from Sardinia had me wondering if a few cultures have a linear and even connected societal knack for going viking.
So basically pirates acting as, well, pirates...
TARTARIA. See actual ancient maps on FLAT EARTH BRITISH channel. HUMAN GIANTS. The ones from the North Pole we now call Vikings. They are not like HOMO CAPENSIS, non-humans.
