Couple Builds Clever $20k Shipping Container Home with NO Experience
In our latest tiny home tour, we share a cozy modern DIY shipping container home on a dreamy waterfront location in northern Washington state. Matt & Paiton are a young couple with no building experience who decided to put down roots and build a tiny house to save money and invest in their future. Previously, they had a simple school bus conversion.
Within a year, they built a 45-foot high cube shipping container home conversion on their developing 5-acre homestead with stunning river views.
Impressively, their tiny container home itself cost only $20,000, due to the clever use of free and low-cost salvage and reclaimed materials. They secured a low-interest lot loan for the land. Now their monthly payment is still $300-400 less than renting a local one-bedroom!

@TinyHouseExpedition Can you tell me the price of LuAnn’s tiny house the 10 x 28?
😊😊😅😊😅😊😅
This is the first build I've seen that actually is affordable and attractive. I love everything you've done with the space. The view you have is incredible. You should both be so proud. Thank you for sharing.
l
I’ve seen tiny houses that cost five times more that didn’t have half the style and nice finishes. This house is incredible for a $20k price tag. And the setting…priceless! Well done! Anyone could be happy and content in that beauty.
20k? Maybe the container, + the construction , the land, the pappers, etc. No less than 100k.
I Durham, I’m not so sure that lot would fetch that much. Difficult access to water, if at all, and an odd shape for building. Just sayin’.
Wow! So impressed by this young couple-in every way. Maturity, intelligence, motivation, design, ingenuity-you two rock! This tiny house is one of the best I’ve seen-& for $20k! A-mazing!
Beautiful home, beautiful couple. The maturity and respect for each other expressed by these young people is refreshing to behold! They would make great tiny home consultants, or builders.
Hopefully they'll see your comment & consider it
You are right, this couple is delightful; the respect and love is evident!! Good for them!!!!👍💯🌟💜🎉
@@daisyterry9508 yeah they sure are, they look like your typical antifa protesters. Notice the gay pride flag on their dump?
Such a beautiful home, very well thought out, you simply cannot beat that view. Amazing job. I have to point out☝🏻how nice it is to see these two being so respectful and loving with one another. Both are considerate, conscientious and kind when speaking with each other. It’s nice to see a couple treating their partners as equals, not interrupting one another. They’re quick to give credit and compliment each other, it shows how fond and how much respect they have for their partner. In a world of me-me-me, it’s especially refreshing to see. Beautiful home and beautiful couple. Congratulations ❤️
Totally agree!
@@sallys9294 TOTALLY agree BOTH are Liberal Democ🐀's
Agree! I was just going to leave a similar comment but you said it perfectly. I definitely want these two to win in life.
You really thought that was planned out well? I mean they're young, so I would think they would eventually have children in life. If they do end up having kid's, this is definitely not good planning.
@@unicornmadness6286 Depends on how you plan to raise that child. They could have a child and live there for at least five years and the way the container is configured they could easily add another if needed.
23, damn. These kids are wiser than most people twice their age. They've got the important stuff figured out.
I love EVERYTHING about this tiny home most importantly I just love this couple. Their communication is so tender and respectful. Such a great demonstration of what real partnership is about. I just had a big smile when Matt said "if you are looking for a back hoe operator..." Blessings to you guys - you totally rock!
Wow! This is absolutely amazing! My husband and I are thinking about what we’re going to do when we retire, and this is definitely an option. We are 59 and 61 yo, and would love to live out our lives in a place like you two have. Congratulations y’all!
Fantastic. I've been looking at tiny homes for 4 years and never dreamed a single container could be converted to such a wonderful home. I love the security it gives, the view is wonderful and the size is perfect. It is beautiful.
With climate change, I think maybe having a portable home to live in might be the answer. The repair and replacement would be less expensive. Could use several of these containers as needed. In some places you might need a storm shelter.
I'm 19, and would love to build myself a tiny house. Don't have enough yet but after a few years of saving up I might be able to do a cheaper one like this. Thank you for being so thorough! It turned out amazingly well!
Many tiny homes are considered RVs and get a loan for them..even if for just the chaise and or builder !
Yeah it’s definitely worth saving up your money to do it
And once you have it you can add on .
You should consider sheds. They're a much cheaper option and you can add on in the future.
Was it costly to move it there ?
Great to see such sensible thoughtful young people. They have given themselves a fantastic start in life. Hats off!
The smartest, most practical, team oriented couple I’ve seen in a spell. Well done
My favorite part is the lovely couple. Such affection shared between them. And a great house 🏡
They valued each other greatly, as well as their abilities. Back hoe operator is a great accomplishment and he appreciated it. And she with his visions. Nice! :D
Yep. It doesn't matter the size or price of the abode. It's the love inside that makes it home.
Tremendous view year round... outdoors brought indoors...I personally would never leave. 💥
They are very thought people. Nice couple.
i know seems like cosy love nest.
A well thought out design internally! $20,000 is a really good price for a comfortable home. The couple should be very proud of their achievement.
Stuart Sutherland especially there. Homes are well over 250k
Actually, the deal is much better than 20k I think. The 20k includes everything inside too so I bet the cost for this build is less than 10k. No idea all the real costs though, how much for the trenching? How much for the septic? Either way, this is a wonderful place.
@@guylamullins3602 try homes in toronto or even an hour outside the city. Houses that sq footage are 1 million easily

$20k was the cost of the container. The finish was way more than $20k
Gosh, what an amazing place to live. Congratulations on creating such a beautiful home and at such a young age too!
Absolutely the best affordable container home design and build that I've seen after years of looking at container homes. A real tribute to the creative synergy of a wonderful partnership!
I love this! Two young people working hard to create their own home hands on and smart.
How Matt and Paiton share, live and work together to live in harmony with nature and each other...well, it's a beautiful thing.
One of the best and most practical presentations on a container/tiny home I've seen. Real and practical advice by people who aren't secretly engineers or designers. And who also seem to be really nice people. I found this really helpful, thank you.
They literally live in a Twilight movie set! My inner teenage girl was screaming lol. It's so beautiful and calming to watch. Such a beautiful home in a magical land.
I wished I was that mature at 23. I was 35 before I purchased a house. You kids are amazing!
I purchased an apartment in my mid-20s and regretted it for a decade. I felt much free-er once I sold it and bought my current place. If this was an option it would have been a game changer for me.
Be proud of yourself!! I didn't buy my own 1st home until I was 50!!! I feel somewhat luckier than others, because I paid all cash, so I don't have a mortgage!! Real estate ownership is such an amazing and satisfying thing, that I have bought 2 other, as rental properties!
I bought my first house when i was 23. i wish i would've paid cash and built a tiny home or purchased one of those pull trailer camper RV things and just saved up until i could pay cash. i mean i've only had my house a year and my mortgage isn't bad, like $1,200.00 a month after i just refinanced down to a 2% interest rate. but still, it would've been nice to save up for 4 or 5 years and just pay cash for a house.
shit. im 47 and never own a house. Im working on that now. lol
Home ownership is not a determinate of maturity. Everyone's on a different path!
I am incredibly impressed that you both accomplished building your own home at such a young age! Congratulations! It is beautiful.
My goodness! Most tiny homes I've seen I do not like, especially the ones that are more long than they are wide, but this one is just so perfect, so simple yet it just really really works. It is very pleasant to my eyes. I think it is the big porch and big carport that balances it out. Somehow that lime green color it's painted adds to it. It is also perched at the most perfect spot. The interior does not have that cluttered look like most tiny homes I've seen, yet it holds much. How does one achieve such a balance? Amazing.
You guys are wonderful. Thank you for the in depth and thoughtful report of your experiences creating and maintaining a container home. Your container home demands a lot of work and love but you both clearly share that in abundance.
Well done Matt and Paiton! Wise and humble couple at such a young age. Amazing home with an amazing view. The planning, research, patience and hard work it took was well worth it. May you both have many years of peace and happiness in YOUR home 😊.
WOW, totally impressed with these two kids, they really worked it out and the results are amazing, like the view...I wish them the best of luck in their future, from my view, they are rockin' it already...!
God bless you both. ❤️
They are seriously the cutest couple! Beautiful home. I wish them many happy years there. 😄
Thank you so much!!! 🖤 We appreciate you and your positivity!
I like the way they give each other credit for good ideas. Great habit for couples, and all teams and society generally! Rock on!
Aren't they cool?!
Yessss They are I love that they compliment each Other❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Just wanted to tell you both what a beautiful soul you truly are, doing something as great as putting together your own tiny home from a shipping container. Together you have created something different and beautiful. The view is something to be hold. Thank You for sharing this video with us.😀🌈
Their character is really inspiring, and what a great home
I like how this young couple planned their home and the details they put into building their home. It was great how they looked up what was shipped in their homes. Kudos to the planning and thoughts on saving.
Planning next to the edge.
Congrats!...nothing is more important that have a healthy and simple life. This is a dream for me, I`m 55 years old guy, living in Los Angeles California and tired already of the sound and air pollution. Thanks for sharing your life and point of views.
Joe- I also live in Lost Angeles. I built a shack (cabin?) in the Mohave. Quiet, clean air, a great escape from the city.
I love interior design. Everything comes together smoothly and it's beautiful inside. Well done, you guys.
Fantastic. They now have the lifestyle envied by most fifty plusses, and youth to enjoy your whole life-family cycle in it without crippling debt. Bravo!!!👏👏👏
Really mature, industrious, committed and hard working young couple. The pitched roof, overhang, deck, placement, interior etc. all are well thought out and executed. I thank them for sharing and wish them both many years of health, happiness, and collaboration !!!
Does anyone know how to reach this youtuber? I mean, to talk to him?
That scenery is gorgeous! What a great tiny home!
Hate it
You two did an amazing job! I love how well you two work so well together! I could just sit on your porch for days! Absolutely beautiful! Great job!
I love how this couple really seems to have bonded closely to each other through the process of building this home, it’s special.

@@markbrownner6565 true, it's a good thing.
Wow... This is the best priced tiny home and these kids have worked really hard and they are so smart and creative. I really like they are saving and thinking about their future. Well Done!!!!!
What a great investment into your future, not only with an absolutely gorgeous view but an air tight comfortable home that was very well thought out. Good job y’all ❣️
Y'all did an amazing job from start to finish, especially finding the perfect spot. It must be so nice to watch wildlife, go fishing, hiking and feeling so secure. The privacy is the best. Congrats on your beautiful home.
Respect to Matt & Paiton. In a world and time when everything is very uncertain you have done your thing, your dream home. Why get in the debt trap of high price property when you can have this. Amazing. I'm sure many young couples would love the same. As for negative comments, just green eyed monsters, ignore and smile. Stay safe and enjoy.
Appreciate you!! 🥰
This is a comfortable house , without alot of sacrifices that you see in some of the other tiny homes. And the location and the view is just breathtaking
Wow 23/24 years old. Y'all give me hope for the future of our species. Such respect.
Matt and Peyton are so well spoken. They are super smart and have a lovely home! I wish the best for them!
Good for you guys! I love how a lot of young folks today, are going back to doing the whole homesteading thing. Some of these kids have really inspired me, at 58, to try and live more simply, and try and become more self sufficient. Thanks for sharing your home! It turned out wonderful 😊 ❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎
Thats just building. Our government no longer does homesteading but people use the word and making it into a whole new meaning. Land was given free if you farmed it and lots of rules. I was a realtor broker aid. Alaskans were last of the free land to develop. If you get land now you have to pay for it and you still have to pull permits to build amd improve.
They have little choice.
Beautiful home that is thoughtfully laid out for aesthetics and maximum use of space on a beautiful location. Very mature couple who seem wise beyond their years. Bravo!!
I'm 57 & I love the land, scenery, home, everything. I wish I would have been that smart at that age. All we knew back then was apartments or rental houses. Stay smart & don't ever finance a house if possible. It's not worth it.
I am 51, and was that smart at their age... just had to use the library and my elders for help and wait longer to save up the money. They have the internet and much better tools and can share ideas. Glad to see some of them using it to improve their lives, instead of wasting it on social media and vodeo games! 😂
Never too late! I'm 57, too, and collecting ideas for my tiny right. this. minute.
@@jazzkatt1919 Same! 56, looking at all kinds of alternative housing options for my next phase, even though I own a coop in Brooklyn, NY. It's time to have fun! Renting out my apt will help fund my new home, whatever it may be!
Finally a container house that doesn’t cost a fortune and looks good! Thanks for sharing 💓
What a lovely home! Good Luck with your future. You have made a great start.
How much?
Agreed!

Wow to this young couple who not only tried something new, that would require lots of different skills, but werent afraid. They accomplished WAAAAAY more than making a SUPER Container home down to the last detail! they have laid the foundation for a very happy relationship, set themselves up financially so young (a Jump on most others), but they also built self confidence and learned so many skills that 'sky is the Limit' for these 2. They havent grasped it all yet, they dont see the big picture yet, but I do bc these 2 are a lot like me & I was doing what came natural- Designing America's electric grid by day & flipping houses after work & weekends, between my other hobbies. I had no idea how it would affect my future, promotions, friends, constant learning - it cemented my future. These 2 will be working on another project, I can tell you! 👍👏
What a beautiful cozy looking home! That view is amazing as well. I'm proud for you two!
Beautiful home…they brought their ideas together to make a beautiful home…I pray you have many years there…♥️
What a likeable down-to-earth couple....very impressive the work they put into this tiny home!! I would never leave the deck....that view is spectacular!!! 😊👏
Impressive and practical build! Also love their vibe. Good for them!
I am lost for words...I can almost cry it's so perfect to me and my wife...love the heck out of it....thanks for sharing...Peace to you and yours...Live well young people..
In addition to the ideas and effort that they have put into building that house, without a doubt what made them successful was the love and companionship that you two have for each other, without a doubt the two of you make a tremendous team, keep it up and may God bless a lot !!
B +, I had g I Job to get to the t
I completely agree, they are definitely a loving team! I noticed that from the beginning.
Very impressive. I'm with Matt on having a big fridge and that kitchen space is awesome. Take care you two and happy trails.
I am a VW person myself. I own a 67 split window and I absolutely love it. That is the reason i clicked on your house I saw the VW. Cool house. You have a great view and seem genuinely in Love.. Thanks for sharing your awesome build!!
Wow! So unbelievably beautiful- you couldn’t have picked a better spot. What cleaver ideas you both had. ❤ so nice to see hard work pay off.
“We are all here just trying to figure this out” this has become more and more apparent to me over the last year.... I thought I had life all figured out. Life laughed at me and started me all over again! Love what you do and the stories you share.... hope to be able to share in conversations with you soon!
what a smart couple. they skipped all the mistakes of expensive housing and skipped straight to a beautiful vacation property and saving more along the way
I love how in sync you are as a couple. how they compromise is awesome
Hi, Matt and Peyton! I hope that you are both well. I first saw your home a few months after you had first completed it and was inspired by how well you both had thought of solutions for things that I probably would have totally missed. Obviously, building out your bus had made you both veterans. Everything about it is lovelier and more efficient than I had remembered. Have you considered filming a second video to discuss pros of things that have gone super well, or the cons of a "parliament" of owls nesting in the trees all around your home to hold their potlucks (mice, toads, worms, and other creatures of various sizes and flavors) that young children might perhaps HATE owls to eat because they might taste "yucky". I've thought that your desk/game table/dining area/puzzle center that was a magical solution. If we didn't have the right sized table, we'd spread a sheet on the floor AND THERE MAY HAVE BEEN your solution. I believe decision as simple as this may even be culturally related. I'm sure ours were. 🤔😃😁 Have you made any additions to your home like adding a folding table for company, etc? I've thought that river view and the sound of the river would be hypnotic. By the way, do you have some means of covering your front glass door when you are traveling? It would be very interesting to see if you still enjoy the sun in the morning and the moon, plus the Milky Way at night. Best wishes. Sherrill Smith 😃 😊 🧡👍
I’m amazed how fabulous and conscientious you two are concerning this intentional build with organic compassion. I would love to do something similar to this. Congratulations, job well done!
Wonderful home! Their thoughtfulness and hard work turned into a beautiful, functional home!
This was one of my favorites. I avoided the container videos, but now my eyes are open. Love the price. Love Matt and Paiton. They seem like good, humble people. I also love how they work together so well. ♥️
Thanks for filming, sharing and inspiring the rest of us!!!
Bravo, kudos and much respect to you both. The "home" and lot next to that gorgeous river is a dream come true. Congratulations on all you've accomplished. Many blessings and a happy life together. You deserve it. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
The beautiful home with a million dollar view!!! Congratulations to the couple....
They seem like a lovely couple. And I applaud the candor about living remotely-- a lot of these kinds of videos don't touch on the challenges that come along with these beautiful locations.
LOVE how you stached the washer/dryer - genius!
Best thing about it, no freaking neighbors next door on both sides or across the street. No noise, smells, dumpy dirty homes next to you. No smoke, no drama. No neighbor problems. A great life. Clean fresh air, clean fresh scenery. Your neighbors are the natural critters, animals, birds and nature. Love the barn door. Good luck to you both.
Bravo to this young couple, this is the only way for the younger generation to get a head start in life not to mention a beautiful way of living.
The best thing they have going for them - is each other. Together, their love, easy compatibility, team ship, mutual respect and personal dignity, will take them very, very far. God keep them!
This is really incredible! I can’t believe that you two are 23 & 24! Smart, economical design, beautiful property and incredible views. Bravo!
Also, I just have to say, they are so kind & thoughtful with one another when they speak - - that is really lovely to see in a younger couple.... : )'
So impressive, this young couple. Ideas and execution of the plan. Love the roof and lean to. The interior design is beautiful! I am amazed at how skilled they are at such a young age.
These guys are amazing! Definitely didn’t have it as together as they do when I was their age 😉😊
The fact that they were able to build something from Ikea in 20 minutes shows just how extraordinary these two are! 😜
Location, location, location. Love this build and the forward thinking genius of this couple.
What a great space! You guys are so young and so ahead of the game. Kudos to you both!
I raised my kids on that river, its the Home of my Heart. ( With your Mom Payton). I opened this, because I'm obsessed with container homes, and what a surprise to see you! Great job! - Mama Sue
So well planned out! Love the washer/dryer/desk/table area. I just love this home! Everything you need at a short reach!
One of the best and practical container houses , saying this watching tons of these videos. Really liked the layout with bedroom on the same level, the interiors and out doors spaces on both sides. Cool and matured couple at such an young age. Best wishes to them for a great future ahead.
Really enjoyed watching this video. Congratulations on what you have accomplished. I love the idea of multi-purpose items, re-purposing items to use and how you worked together on this important project. Amazing!!!
I love this one! Not cluttered; so open, modern and comfy.

INR ❤ hopefully many youg people will see this and have their dreams in life (owning a home/mansion) realized!! It's really sad that today so many young couples have to have their dream homes as soon as they are married!! it's awesome to have a fat bank account in your elder years ❤
I agree, a wonderful price and no rent/mortgage hanging over their head. Great for a first home and for quite a long time. A great deal of experience comes with this.
Ok, I’m jealous! Perfect space in the house and being able to live there with all that nature to enjoy ☺️
Wow! Your tiny home is inspiring. Love that you used so much reclaimed material .
Impressive young couple & truly blessed to have the maturity & commitment to each other at this stage... congratulations & best wishes for a long life of love & joy ❤ 😍
I'm watching as many of these videos as I can, collecting ideas that will fit my own tiny house goals. One thing I love about tiny houses and the people who build/inhabit them is that there really does seem to be so much room for personalization and adaption to fit the needs of the owners. I especially love stories about people who own the land where their homes are located, because for me, one of the primary reasons to go tiny is to be independent, and how on earth would it serve that purpose to build a lovely tiny home and then have to rent a place to park it? If I wanted to be at the mercy of a landlord, I'd rent an apartment. If I decide to skip buying land, it will be as a full-on nomad, with a customized RV or skoolie. No leases for me. Not ever again.
Small container on a flat bed truck. Drive off into the sunset! No worries! 😉
This was probably one of my favorite videos of Tiny homes content honestly... What's so cool about these tiny homes is that if you end up needing more room you can buy another shipping container and build it onto your main home,so if they do decide that that was t children in a few years or so then that's all they would have to do AND it would STILL be cheaper than either buying a "normal" house or moving into a bigger one!! I just love the idea of shipping container homes,I would love to have the money to build one and be able to afford living during the time it takes to build them, unfortunately my hubby is the only one working right now and times getting tough again, with has prices skyrocketing along with food and other necessities SMH it's been really hard to save much.. We even had to go into our savings and use some of it, it's just so disappointing.. Rent alone is $1,200 and then there's water/electric,internet,2cell phones, car insurance,1 cat and 1 dog that we spoil, plus ourselves and whatever we might need ya know? Anyways sorry I just said more than I needed to LOL I'm really just pointing out the fact that if I didn't have the obligation of paying all of these bills and I could just save all of the money my husband makes that we surely COULD afford to buy & build a shipping container into a home, especially if my hubby and I did like this couple did to save money.. And I am a firm believer in "if it doesn't get used then you don't need it" having things that do not serve a purpose,to me is basically hoarding... BEAUTIFUL HOME guys☺💋🧡
This is what the American dream is all about. Thank you young folks for keeping it alive. This what Americans fought for . U BOTH have the pioneer spirit for that u have the blessing of all the ancestors. Peace n Love
One of the best tiny homes. Very functional and space efficient.

I love the bedroom, most tiny homes have the loft and that doesn't work for everyone.
