  • I am Martha’s neighbor, I’m in a hobbit house across the way. I’m the one who nicknamed her house the death star, and was so glad to find out she was a true star wars fan! 😊 She’s thinking of putting a sign over the front door that says, “that’s no moon!” 💕

  • Her place is 320 square feet and I think she said it was less than $60,000. Where I live houses with as little as 800 square feet would cost a minimum of $500,000. The property prices go up from there! Those who say that these are too expensive must be using different math. I live in a rare mobile home park in Massachusetts and my lot rent is $821 a month. It covers water/sewer, tash, and snow plowing. If I wanted to rent an apartment the size of my trailer, it would cost $2500-$3000 a month and often won't include utilities.

    • Yeah, design has a lot to do with it... Tiny Houses make use of every square inch versus how large houses are built that it's nice if they even make use of every square feet... It's also why most are having their tiny house custom built as then it's optimized for them with no wasted spaces they don't need.

  • Randy is a very smart guy to create these communities... And as a single person, I would love to live where I knew most of my neighbors (if not all) and we visited with each other. That's such a healthy environment. And she has everything she needs in that space! An queen sized bed, a full shower, a washer and dryer, a good sized oven and fridge, and lots of light -- and did you see all that wood? What a gorgeous interior. My heating bill for the 4-bedroom apartment I live in is $300 a month in the winter. I'd love to have a $30 a month bill. Her rent is reasonable, too. I envy her.

Thanks so much for sharing it with us, and for encouraging Jenna to feature Randy and his business as well. There could be a small grocery store, boutique, small drug store, an old fashion dinner/malt shop, A theater for entertainment. Use for all kinds of community plays, music, movies, Post office, etc. All these business could be run by the folks in the community. What do you all say to that idea? They have just started the roads fir The Mountain which is across the road from the 3 Communities he just completed. In fact, he just said they plan a Covered Bridge to one of the Ponds. There are so many things he has on the Drawing Board. Of course he plans to build a Community Building. The neatest is one of the residents planted grapes for wine and they are already producing. Fruit tress have been planted too. Randy plowed garden plots last spring for veggie gardens. Watch the channel and all the golf carts running around. Most of all Ace the resident side kick to Randy. I long to downsize and simplify my life. I don’t think I could actually go completely tiny but a whole lot smaller - definitely. I am really fascinated with the lifestyle and simplifying - but whoever feels that this is perfect for them I support wholeheartedly. I think it is a wonderful alternative for young people, retired people and others to get out of the rent trap, live with just what you love and need and have more time, energy, and money to do what you love in life.

    • There's still people with misconceptions of what a tiny house is, like there's still those who cling to the stigma of trailer trash homes, for example. Some also just don't understand the appeal or may be among the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) crowd that think anything different is going to bring down property values or bring bad neighbors, etc. Many are also still clinging to the old beliefs that home should appreciate, be treated as investments, bigger is better, etc. and haven't learned the lessons from the housing bubble crash or understand how the housing system is a broken and failing system that's only going to continue to get worse unless something major changes... It takes time but eventually, more and more people will understand...

      @ZeoCyberG@ZeoCyberG2 жыл бұрын
    • @@ZeoCyberG These are excellent insights which help me understand better. I couldn’t agree more that our housing system is broken. There are far too few affordable housing options and people pay much too large a percentage of their income for housing. I have wondered if the reason why tiny houses are not legal in some areas is due to the loss in property tax income for the city. What a shame though.

      @Moerocha62@Moerocha622 жыл бұрын
    • @@Moerocha62 Well, the good news is it's slowly turning around... Over 14 states have adopted Appendix Q, basically adding Tiny Houses to their building codes to at least make it possible to have one on a foundation, albeit there may be other obstacles to get around first... Tiny Houses are becoming a popular option for ADU's, even being allowed where other alternatives like RV's won't be allowed... There's continuing to be new developments like this community that specifically creates places for tiny houses. Though, most continue to be rental spaces and are zoned like RV parks, but there are a growing number where people can actually purchase the lot and have the home recognized as a residence and even be issued a certificate of occupancy... Helps that the housing problems are becoming undeniable to even the most resistant and public opinion has steadily shifted in favor of alternative options, providing increasing pressure to legislatures to make the changes to the laws. There's just still a long road ahead and change is slow as often such changes happen over years and even decades but it's happening and we can look at communities like this one for real results of that progress...

      @ZeoCyberG@ZeoCyberG2 жыл бұрын
    • @@ZeoCyberG Yes that is good news. I would bet that these city counsels and other officials aren’t unlike other elected officials - affected by the monied interests. I think that public opinion is the key to some of this change as well. I live in a development above a golf course which we recently fought hard to prevent from being redeveloped. The owners wanted to build hundreds of homes & condos on it. It took years of organizing and appealing to the city to prevent it - but we finally won. It is still a golf course! So little green space is still around so we are thrilled.

Like you, I'm going to take the plunge. I have some more repairs to do on my small house in Oregon, and then I'll be selling it and coming to Newport to buy an ITH tiny and live on the ITH Mountain. Can't wait! Thanks for the tour. ❤️

  • 320 square feet is plenty of space for a single. On paper I've figured out something similar, 10 X 32, and it has room for everything. I'd add a deck beyond the sliding doors, and it could be screened in during the summer.

  • Living on a fixed income. How could I even start the idea of living in a tiny home? I live in a boarding house where my rent is two-thirds of my check. The rest goes to bills and whatever food I can afford for the month. I would love to live in a tiny home since it's only me. No family, so Holidays will be like every other day. Only one person there. I love your designs. Keep up the good work.

  • What I love is that you have option to move your home. HUD mobile home communities really TRAP owners. Many have horrible landscape, poor management and once the owner pays off the house the owner cannot afford to move the home out of the park. I love that Randy is thinking of the owners. If you must live in close proximity GIVE your owners something besides another “trailer” to stare at. Love this!

    @charlotte241000@charlotte2410002 жыл бұрын
    • UK needs major reform of land ownership and development planning. For example, half of England is owned by less than 1% of the population. If the land were distributed evenly across England’s population, each person would have just over half an acre - an area roughly half the size of Parliament Square in central London. So there's actually enough land for everyone, just won't work with the present system managing it... While getting permission to develop a property can take so long, up to multiple years, that it puts high pressure to turn that property into a profitable one and that unfortunately makes it extremely hard for anyone to develop affordable housing, especially with so few actually owning the land, placing a lot of the control into special interests that don't have everyone's interest as a priority... Among other things they're messing up in the UK...

    • I want to be able to live in one in Philly! I doubt that it would be allowed in the city because of safety purposes first of all and secondly seemingly there would be political officials who would have so much to say about them and so much is all about money in Philly ... But we need more affordable housing badly because there's so much homelessness AND regentrification has taken over so much of the city! I would LOVE a tiny home of my own in a safe environment perhaps outside of Philly!
