I have noticed since the Australian Open she has had a hard time closing out sets and matches. • @@HoangNguyen-rd6qy Maybe - but if she goes not beyond quarters at RG she will fall - even more as she did in this year. She is 2000 points away in WTA race (points this year) from Swiatek, Rybakina and Sabalenka. That means around winning 2 big events (next category below Grand Slam) while the other 3 have to loose in the first round. Even worse - her good tournaments took place in the future - so she has to defend her points. Number one would definately not happen this year. I predict she will end up on position 4 by end of this year (if she is lucky). The three in front of her are running away (Danielle Collins too) and behind her a lot of young talented women are filling the points gap. While she is more or less standing still in her achivement they are closing up.

    • @@nawigitf World-Rankings ... not WTA-race - these are two different things. The maybe more important thing is the WTA-race - especially when it comes to the end of the year - if you're inside the Top8 you are qualified for the year-end-tournament. Just have a look how much Coco Gauff has achieved so far after the Australian Open (with a lucky draw and a tournament full of upsets with the exception of the winner). She did not win much this year ... The World rankings counts the last year - Coco has to defend many, many points soon - she will loose her No. 2 pretty soon if she goes on not winning this and that tournament. And ... in her current form (may it be physical or mental) I don't think she will do this.

  • Keys is a formidable opponent. She didn't let the 5-2 deficit discourage her, was persistent and ended up taking the 1st set. • It was so frustrating to watch Coco beat herself once again in this match... Double faults in double digits, missing easy forehands by miles. It baffles me that her and her team still haven't managed to fix her serve and forehand, because we've been talking about those weaknesses for 4 years now. Like, does she really work on her weaknesses or she only focuses on her strengths and that's it? She should've won this match in straight sets. It wasn't like Keys was amazing in there, but when she was up 5-2 in the 1st set, she started to double faults and missing her forehand. Same thing happen at the end of the 3rd set when she was a break up... What the hell is wrong with her serve and her forehand?! I don't understand. Can somebody explain to me what is she doing wrong technically, because no matter what the conditions, fast or slow hard courts, indoor courts, grass, clay, whether it's windy or not, her problems remain the same.

    • With the serve, it's mostly the toss that's the issue 90% of the time. The forehand has always been problematic, the takeback is too big, she tends to lean backwards when she's pressed, her grip is too closed and doesn't allow her to really press on the ball when it's above shoulder hight so she resorts to sending loopy, easy to attack forehands back. The footwork gets sloppy at times, not a fan of open stance forehands especially when she tries to redirect it down the line. It's just not her best shot, and I'm sure she's doing specific drills to improve where she's lacking, but changing your technique at this stage of her development as a player is difficult and takes time. Also, Keys plays with such a pace that any potential changes she might have wanted to try wouldn't have really worked. When you get pounded by the ball like that you tend to revert to you default settings. Same reason Swiatek gets beaten by Rybakina, Ostapenko etc.

  • This was actually one of Coco’s better games. There is definitely some improvement in forehand and she showed a lot of confidence going for some of those shots. She just doesn’t seem to be consistent throughout or sometimes close well. She is either fighting from behind or has a solid start and then becomes passive. Again this is all relative because apart from the other 3 she is on par with the rest of the top 10. Most don’t make it past the qtr or semi -finals. So she just needs to keep working! It can only get better.

  • First Maddie played this match and these were the types of matches she'd lose last year (those loses to Aryna for example). To people saying Maddie shouldn't have had a chance must be new or ignorant cause she's always a threat. Now to cousin Coco. Even though she lost this tournament was a move in the right direction. In previous rounds she was playing very aggressive tennis and was locked in. This is also the first tournament since AO where I've seen the same monsterous anticipation that won her the USO. So then why did she lose? Well Maddie played top 10 tennis, but I think it's Coco's attitude. She's clearly frustrated and she's slipping back into those negative responses. I could see her bringing Pera back next year if he's open to it.

  • If Coco does not learn to play better and consistent ankles and/or improve her mind game she won't come far this year. She is playing to often with to much power in the middle of the court. It may is a way to give Iga not so much ankles but other players just use her power for exactly doing this what she should do - outplace her. Tactical-wise there is a lot of work for Coco. But nevertheless - great win for Madison - congrats to her.

  • I think CoCo tends to get a little tired in some of her matches and it causes her to get out of her focus and hit lazy returns, once she figures that issue out in my opinion she will be a force. I think women’s tennis is wide open right now, for whoever can stay consistent.

    • Coco should stop playing doubles and use the time to work on her shot selections. To compete with the best, Coco should try to stay fresh. Participating in tournament doubles can lead to cultivating habits that impair singles performance. Iga, Sabalenka and Rybakina abstain from doubles competition except team tennis tournaments. Btw, Keys abstained from doubles in this tournament.

    • She needs another coach (to fill the void left by Pere) to work alongside Brad. That's the only way. Brad can't do it alone. People tend to forget that. But anyways; Coco has time to grow and develop her game. Madison on the other hand; I don't know. Still hoping she can win at least one major before she retires.
