Ive analyzed quite a few nirvana live performance videos to figure out EXACTLY how Kurt Cobain, the frontman of Nirvana, plays their global SMASH single "smells like teen spirit".

  • I appreciate the attention to detail in this video. There is something I'd like to point out that I still don't see anybody talk about and it's strictly on the album version (live versions are much more loose): A.) the very first bar of the measure has a delay with the mutes and B.) going back from the C#5 to the F there is no open strings flung inbetween - almost like it's a loop. So he strums the chord but then has a slight delay, almost like he made a mistake, then mutes the strings and goes into the rest of the progression but cleanly goes back to the F5 for the second pass around. If you listen to it again, you'll notice it. He never does this ever again but if you want to nail the _precise_ way to play it, you're going to want to do that too. It gives the song the iconic scratchiness.

  • Many years ago when I was first learning I had a book that said to do that sus 4 and some jerk told me I was wrong. Gave up trying to explain to guitarist, when I picked up bass, what they should actually be playing.

  • The upstroke and sus4 is absolutely right. But the sus4 accent isn’t always that pronounced. It’s sort of fading in and out inconsistently. Great video tho

  • Still wrong,i don't know how, but theres no 3 down strokes on end of strumming patern, theres something like down up down or smth, i dont know but this pisses me because its so hard to find out xD

  • You’re doing it wrong too he doesn’t do 4 chickas after the first power chord, there’s a little stutter there

  • You're also playing it wrong. The first set of muted strikes have some open notes ringing through prior to the first B flat. Nobody ever mentions this but it's clear as day on the album.
