  • Great job. Nice work! Thanks for sharing. I'm old so bear with me here. I learned much in 17 years from a Master Craftsman from Denmark and he saw me rapping the tool rest to clear the chips from my (his) gouge and said to me. "Never do that again." Being full of questions & eager to learn, (I still am today) I asked why. He said what has stuck with me now for the rest of my days, I'm retired now. "Every dig, scratch, dimple or wave in a tool rest, reflects your inability to respect your tools and your work." It was hard to hear that from him as I always left an area I worked in cleaner than I found it and I respected his lifetime of teaching his trades to others. I spent the rest of the hour that day bringing to a polished surface that tool rest and gouge. Sometimes the simplest things make the difference between a Master's work and novice's work. I'm still learning those differences.

  • Wow; what a beautiful shop! I could make anything in there! Just this weekend, I was turning a big 6x6x36 piece of mahogany into a replacement front porch roof finial, and a drop. I've been using my great cheapo old lathe for over 40 years. I've done all kinds of woodwork, but the lathe is still the coolest tool!

  • Wow Oliver, you always surprise me, and I’m always thoroughly impressed with your work. In my opinion you are the best turner on you tube, your work and imagination for the extraordinary are so impressive. I only wish you were able to upload more videos, but of course it takes time when you are doing such complicated works of art, (like your 30,000 piece, that should be on display at an art gallery) just know I love your work xx

  • Very nice, and very clever. The contrast of round and square is very attractive. It might have been interesting to leave some of the darker wood in the centre, for some colour contrast as well.

  • Ok, you started with a cube and turned it into a cylinder. That seems straightforward. Then you turned the cylinder into 2 square bowls. That seems completely counterintuitive (given that I am not a woodturner myself). What amazes me is how you conceive of these projects. Do you have it all figured out to start with, or do you have to do several "drafts" before you get it the way you want? Either way, it is a pleasure to watch the progeny of your mind emerge.
