Antique Axe Restoration. I Did It Again, BUT BETTER...
More axe experiment. I'm pretty sure this has never been done before.
What do you think about this axe restoration - makeover?
Should I stop it?
This project is just for fun, my hope is to inspire others to make something just for fun. I know this kind of handle it's heavy (4kg or 9lbs) and very unpractical to make but I still love it as experiment and interesting piece overall.
I just started to list some of the stuff I use for my projects in this amazon storefront:
www.amazon.com/shop/blackbear...
It's affiliate marketing, so if you order something from here you'll help the channel for free! Thank you!
Index of operation and materials:
0:15 Electrolysis: water and sodium carbonate solution, parts connected to negative side and steel sacrificial anodes to positive sice of a DC power supply (car battery charger). 2-3 hrs at 10amp.
1:52 Hot wire foam cutter machine and high density foam (kind used as home insulation).
3:00 Smoothing the foam sharp tool and 240 sandpaper.
3:40 Gluing foam piece with hot glue.
4:10 Regular white plaster brushed on foam to help with cast quality.
4:45 Lost foam mold preparation by sifting fine sand (I'm using burned out petrobond sand but any fine and dry sand would work)
5:24 Adding sodium carbonate as degassing agent and "lite salt" (a mix of potasium cloride and sodium cloride) as flux to the molten aluminum.
6:18 First try failed. Removing aluminum parts from head
6:26 Second try with different feeder configurations
7:20 Removing feeders with metal cutting band saw and hand saw
8:04 Refining aluminum parts with rasp file and sandpaper
8:32 Shaping wood key
9:05 Drilling 5mm holes for brass pins
9:20 Shaping handle with bandsaw, rasp, file and sandpaper
11:33 Burning wood with torch
11:56 Boiled linseed oil applied to wood
12:20 Re-grinding bevels and sharpening on belt grinder.
Thank you a lot for watching. See you next week!

use wd-40 for cuts, sands, mills, drills on aluminum let the bandsaw cut. forcing the material through may result in injury if the belt sander were to catch the material may result in injury plz limit reaching over/around spinning parts i like your videos and im not trying to be a dick

It’s beautiful and unique! As an engineer, I recommend you hang it on the wall and admire it! Under heavy, repeated use the aluminum will probably crack and shear right under the head. But I repeat; it’s beautiful!

pretty good job but bad concept : that full aluminium axe holder will break like crystal after a few woodcutting sessions. aluminium is very sensible to vibrations and therefore will get weak quickly.
But it's still better than the whole aluminum handle he did in the previous video 😬
It's not a axe
Why would you have a woodcutting session with a pickaxe? Wrong tool
Na that aluminium ain't breaking!
That and when you pour molten aluminum into the head like that you ruin the temper of the head and weaken the steel
I don’t understand the negativity. You know yourself that it isn’t a practical item but in my opinion this is about trying something new and figuring out what won’t work for the next project. Keep them coming. Everyone is unique and worth watching.
What negativity? Is he deleting negative comments or something? I'm not seeing very many negative comments..
I think he is talking about what he say in the description :3
If its not practical, its not a restoration... it is a transformation into arty stuff
Maybe it's for the previous video...some (not so) expert in this kind of stuff keep flaming on him... Well... we live in a world where many people can just casually throwing negativity on this kind of creativity...
We are all going to have to make our own tools and weapons cause the Government Look's after their own
I’ve been restoring axes for about 5 years now. I picked it up after watching wranglerstar and falling in love with the small forest axe like him. This project was incredibly interesting to watch and I love the aesthetics of the finished product. I don’t think you were looking for function over form. The design is just that of someone who doesn’t know axes that well. Palm swell totally out of proportion, key hole integral should never be anywhere near an axe, you didn’t even orient the grain of the handle in the proper direction. That being said, I don’t think your goal was to make the next granfors brœks small forest, but to incorporate unusual and interesting techniques on something they don’t normally apply to, and personally I found it incredibly entertaining and fascinating to watch. Very awesome stuff, you got my subscription.
x8alexisonfire9x finally someone not being completely negative and narrow minded. It seems no one reads his descriptions on his videos before commenting that they hate what he's done. It's just a project he decided to do for fun.
Um hi
It's a mattock not an axe
Interesting, but as soon as I figured what was going on, I was instantly confused by the choice of aluminium. There's a reason no functional tools use this process.
Some things aren’t about being pragmatic
The description says it was made for fun, not to be practical :)
@Isaiah Costic aluminium is extremely maleable and soft: There's a good reason steel is the primary material for hard wearing tools

This head is from a Mattock, not an axe. It is, fundamentally, a digging tool that can be used in almost any tough soil conditions to either loosen, dislodge or dig. It is designed for penetrating soil through to the root structures below the stump, if not to annihilate a rotten stump entirely. Using it to cut perpendicular to the tracheids in softwood/heartwood is simply a misuse of what is closer to a smashing instrument than cutting one - the surface area of the bladed edges are simply an aid to penetration through a wide range of soil conditions, root structures, stones and rocks. While a slightly sharpened edge can be useful in certain structures with excellent soil quality, each edge is designed to withstand direct blows to any rock that might be found under the soil and not result in any lasting deformation to it.
Quinglo Quinglo finally, some real information rather than some stupid “lmao axe dull im so funny xD 😂” comments
Razan Ar Right?
Quinglo Quinglo Finally! Someone with dignity to point that out! (Not trying to be disrespectful)
Yes. Its a mattock. I’ve been looking for one myself. I used to have one and damned if I don’t know where it walked off to. If I restored this one I would wire wheel it clean, fit a hardwood handle to it, and add an oil finish. All of this casting and keyholing and such is all very skillful I admit. And we all have an opinion on how to fix things. In the end we do what we want and if others don’t like it they can make their own damned video....right?
The sharpness..... it leaves JunsKitchen depressed his hand must be inching the sharpen that axe

What you have there is a "pulaski" tool used for fighting forest fires. "The Pulaski is a special hand tool used in fighting wildfires which combines an axe and an adze in one head. Similar to a cutter mattock, it has a rigid handle of wood, plastic, or fiberglass. The Pulaski is used for constructing firebreaks, able to both dig soil and chop wood"
making the choice of aluminium and design a good idea
Wow! You have given this antique and old axe a new life!👍👍
Anyone else watching the first half of the video like wtf is going on?
Yeah I was confused too 😅
sad but true hahaha
I was wondering wtf he was doing at the beginning
Yes, but I had the volume off. Did he say why he didn't just make a completely metal handle? He could have started with a custom wood handle (or styrofoam I guess?! For reasons?!) and then make a reusable mold with clay/plaster/not sand/dirt. Then full metal handle.
He never says a thing, not one word. The amount of wasted effort that's gone into making this so poorly... And the abuse of tools! Using the same blade to cut the wood and the metal? It's just ludicrous.
13:10 Did he just take a gardening axe, put it on a wood-cutting axe handle, and try to cut wood? That would explain the minimal success he had trying to cut that log.
I was kinda wondering that too
Yeah.. It's called a Pulaski where I come from and used for digging in dirt and chopping small roots!! NOT an ANTIQUE AXE for sure!!! Still used buy Fire Fighters and Hiking Trail makers!!
Haha - I was going to say the same thing.
The minimal success can likely be attributed to him destroying the heat treat on this axe by heating it well above 400° by pouring molten aluminum all over it. I bet it was as dull as a butter knife after his attempt to cut that log.
It's a forestry service firefighting tool, not a gardening axe.
I love the fact that you clearly explain what you are doing at what time in the description ! Very interesting and useful !
i've been subscribed for like 4 years, and i never noticed until your comment i've wondered so many times...

Recover big ax. Thanks for sharing the video, I'm learning from you!
This is lowkey asmr
Not very practical, overall, a conventional solid-wood handle is going to be more solid in the long run. But darn if it doesn't look cool, man! That was a fun project to watch. Lots of work there, and it came out looking really neat. Props for the hard work and fun idea! More sharpening, though! That edge needs more!
Dan Brown (not attacking I swear) In my honest opinion I dont think he's planning on using this for actual function, I believe he's just making a unique design
Woooow, that axe is amazing!!!
Vc e de que paiz
Again, great video and I hope to keep watching videos like this on your channel! Thanks!
The way he attached the wood handle to the head scares me, I wouldn't take a swing with it. It would most likely break very easily after using it for a while
well he used it for a while lol
Ebraheem Karim definitely not how you would chop wood if you were actually working. The swings would be much bigger and more powerful, I feel like the axe would fly off after a bit
TheGodEmperorofMankind add some flex glue and it will never break
Ebraheem Karim He used it for like an hour at most
He added screws into both the metal n wood so that doesnt happen
This tool is meant for ground level work...brush fires and trail work since the head doesn't have the mass needed like woodcutters use. Handles are usually long but can be short for inclines like mountain sides. A little too much meat in the handle for my taste as I tend to lose grip after swinging for about an hour.
I have never saw any hand tool with a Wooden handle attached to the tool head with cast aluminum. I was confused at first but then was very impressed as the video continued. Awesome design and build. Thanks for sharing!
I love how this guy doesn’t add music in his videos, it’s kinda calming in a way plus you don’t have to listen to crappy techno music!

HAL 9000 only needs to sharpen it and yeah
and its just as useless as when it was rusty

DiesInEveryFilm Customs nice roust. And it’s not more expensive it was just a peace of shit before and now has a use
I personally think it looks badass
mmm true but its not meant for cutting wood in the first place, its a pickaxe or a battleaxe of some sort
But... why? Was this aluminum "connector" necessary?
The anode is where the oxidation of the metal is happening whereas the Axe is reduced from the oxide to the metal, the aluminum is the connector between both anodes, he uses "two" anodes to cover more space
@@jahpedro3971 I guess you just don’t get it

That was awesome BUT who were you making those heavy metal muffins for?
When you cast aluminum, you pour the extra out of your crucible into the muffin pan to make easy to melt ingots for your next project. If you let that much metal melt in your crucible it'll cause problems.
Raelynn Do you have to spray the muffin tins with pam to keep them from sticking? 8 )

This axe is a farming implement more than a woodsman tool. It was meant for cutting roots and planting tubers more than chopping wood. I seriously hope no one is complaining about it's performance for a task it was not intended but still did well enough on.
No axe is good for just straight cutting. Literally any axe would've looked just as ineffective if used in the same way as in the demonstration in the video.
Some real knowleadge at all. I can't handle so many coments about how ineficient an axe based on what isn't an axe
Pablo Díaz it has a blade just like an axe, and it can be sharpened to just as sharp as an axe. It might be used differently but it can ultimately perform the same as a normal axe.
pikkuhakki2 no. It's not have the right angles, material and weight distribution. So you think a skidder has 4 wheels It can be as fast as F1 car? Nope

May I suggest using acetone to remove the foam core first? That way when you pour the metal the foam doesn't cause the flame, black ash and horrible chemicals into the air. Its also a lot safer, and gives you a better cast. :) Just leave the acetone to sit for a while (even 12 hours) while it eats away the foam.
I love seeing the "cameos" of the tools you make in other videos, like the ball bearing knife you made. Really inspiring stuff!

Interesting idea, but there's a reason why you don't re-invent the wheel. A standard one piece wooden handle is far stronger, your contraption will break at the wood/aluminum joint if you push it too hard. Adding a metal collar around those "langets" or compression screws between them (instead of those simple pins) would strengthen the joint, but eventually the aluminum will deform or crack under stress anyway.
Thanks for the information i did not know that but you have to give it to him it did look pretty nice
Yaa it did look nice but why he didnt swing it like you do with that size axe... well it could break off at first swing
