Antique Hatchet Restoration. Third Time's a Charm!
Yet another hatchet "restoration". With this one I am starting to get the feel of these casting experiments!
Bought this hatchet a flea market in my town for 3€, it has a makers mark on one side but it's not readable anymore.
The weight with the wooden handle was 983g (2.2lb). With the aluminum cast handle it's now at 2159g (4.8lb) pretty much double.
I say this kind of handle won't break. Ever. It has no play and I doubt the amount of metal surrounding the heat can break with use. it's just too beefy! Of course it has downsides like added weight and grip. Some will say vibration too and others the fact that will be cold to touch much more than wood but I don't use hatchets that much to notice any of these downsides.
For me is a showpiece, this project is just for fun, my hope is to inspire others to make something just for fun.
I just started to list some of the stuff I use for my projects in this amazon storefront:

The handle is wrong for four reasons. 1) The center of gravity needs to be at the axe end. 2) The handle needs to absorb shocks. 3) The handle needs to last. 4) The handle needs to be easy to replace. *But, as a piece of art, this item is wonderful.*
Why not anodize the handle? That would go well with the black blade.
Curved handles are a modernism, metal handles are a crime against humanity, and as a piece of art this is fucking ugly.

@@l.s7577 The description is stupid. This handle is cast, and poorly cast at that (there's a reason it took three attempts). The handle can and will break if anyone is stupid enough to use it. And when it does break, unlike wood, which will start to show splintering long before it fails, this handle won't give the user any clue beforehand - it'll just snap and the head will go flying.

Indeed, as the descriptions says, its an experimentation.
Agreed. I don’t like the metal for an axe handle but I love the workmanship, effort and indeed the possibilities. I think this is a dead end project but the journey is more important then a single item, as is the multiple failures. If I was rating the project out of 10, I’d give it an easy 8.5 even if it isn’t something I’d build or even want. Beautiful work, I love it, (also, I do want it, soooo pretty).
