  • We have two shifts at work that hate each other. I’m on a separate team that overlaps both shifts and get to see both sides. It’s amazing how little it takes to get them at each others throats.

    • You gotta understand that that era and the people in it are very different from today. There wasn't a climate of academics milking the system and manipulating the scales and so much time to focus on trivial things. Also they didn't have all the information that we have on hand. They also didn't have an idea of the world that we do. We on a basic lvl know what's happening in every corner of the world now. They didn't, the next state away might as well have been china distance wise. I say all that on the basis that maybe you're viewing the scientist and experiment from the perspective of the present day situation

  • this sounds like the story of my current place of work, where people from different divisions spy on each other and just talk smack even for the pettiest thing. I'm a detached person by default and I think it's pathetic. People with good education and decent upbringings behaving like idiots. I hang out with people from the other group and they're nice people. Tribalism really is innate in us, unfortunately.

  • Unfortunately, this is the truth in the modern world. Tribalism at its finest. It is natural to want to defend your beliefs and opinions, but this two sided mentality has gotten far out of hand. Good reminder to always be aware of everything, including how you yourself are both acting and thinking. The first step in changing your surroundings is by changing yourself.

  • This is an awesome eye opener. It makes me wonder about most of the conflicts in our nation and the world. Like the bloods and the crips, these people both live in the hood with limited resources (which we know is systematically done on purpose), with no camp counselor to stop the fight as an example.

  • Political enemies are still enemies. The side that wants to be left alone will lose to the side that wants to win. The side that sits nobly by clinging to its principles, faced with ignoble opponents, will lose nobly. In the context of a gamed experiment, tribalism is funny and a bit stupid. In the context of sporting events, same deal. Politics is a substitute for violence and is anything but a game. It should not be lumped in with an experiment using teenagers or viewed as a collective of acrylic paint dawned sports fans. Lastly, it should tell us something about our era and ourselves that we view our most primal and important instincts as uncouth and outdated and unjustified. Nestled within them is the ability to identify friend from foe, to coalition build, and to defend one's people. Not the stuff to sneer at.

    @nzxtMonster@nzxtMonster3 ай бұрын
    • You took the words out of my mouth. This experiment Jocko’s discussing is totally irrelevant. The reality is America is at a point where there are statistically significant numbers of people who disagree with basic and Traditional American morality. And they are acting on it. Also his quip about the political sides flipping is true, but is in no way the historic track record. Most of us only remember GOP neocon platforms. But historically the GOP has been conservative populists stretching all the back to the 1800’s. And shocker the republicans who were populists (excluding Reagan) were elected in some of the biggest landslides in American political history. I would’ve liked if Echo had pushed Jocko on his whole commonality viewpoint with a simple question of “so what do you do about the extremist who are getting legislation done and riot?” This coming together notion will not happen unless there is a major event that incentivizes people coming together to survive. Or one side wins outright. No altruistic politician will be able to unite the nation, we are too far gone for that.

  • Wow, I have fallen into this 100%. I work in engineering and am convinced that sales is only concerned about themselves, not the company... Like when we are negative in a month and they ask for cost reductions. I assume they don't care if we go under as long as they get their commission. What can I do to start climbing the lader of alignment, and bridge the gap with sales? You would think the working for the same company, was our "superordinate goal" so where does the animosity come from?

  • As you've mentioned, it comes down to one group looking at another and saying, "you are not MY KIND" Something that has been a part of the animal instinct throughout history. It is an aspect of overt and harmful prejudice and bigotry. There are multiple ways of perceiving prejudice and bigotry, but that combined way is what has kept misery in human society for as long as one human being and another human being has existed and interacted (society). It comes down to the individuals I describe as YOUR KIND trying to force others to live their other life in the ONLY way YOUR KIND thinks everyone else should be living their lives. YOUR KIND will then have this perception of the other fester until they will to do something to change this other's life in ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM, until that other either changes their life, moves away (is evicted) or dies (gets killed). Please note, when I describe YOUR KIND, it does not involve race, religion, sexuality or anything physical.

If one had nefarious intentions they would use some of the results to help create more tension & division in society by creating more labels/groups etc. instead of harmony. Could that be what we are seeing with current events as so many become divided? Think for yourself is always a better approach. Thanks

  • We're all humans at the end of the day. We all want the same things. Of course, there will be the TRULY nefarious people that muck it up, but can't we take this perspective to the global level? What would life be like if we had global unity, where in our schools we were taught how to speak chinese, arabic, or russian and understand the cultures outside our country and have peace between the nations and people? However, I doubt that's what our government (or any government, in fact) would even want. The people in power have their ulterior motives and something as simple as the idea discussed in this video could be achieved but modern humans are way too distracted and busy thinking about themselves to care about coming together on a global level. Everyone is nice, fat, and "happy" to really do anything about it. That's what our modern world is built for: to distract everyone and make the masses docile and controllable. Makes me think that the only thing that could unite the world is for a hostile alien species to approach our world in order for us to come together. As humans, we like to have enemies, something to blame our problems on, it'd be the only thing to bring us together. I think the way we are hardwired to identify and create enemies is what makes us "evil" creatures. Humans are mean and unforgiving, I would understand if any intelligent alien life forms would want to avoid interacting with us lol. We would probably begin to "eat" the alien universe if given the chance...
