Restoring a Meat Cleaver from 1837

In this video, I restore a meat cleaver and make a walnut box to protect the blade. The meat cleaver is from 1837 and was made by L & I.J. White from Buffalo, New York. It is not stainless steel because stainless steel was not invented until the early 1900s.
The blade is 12" long and the handle is also 12" long. The blade height ranges from 6" at the tip to 4" at the heel. The blade is 0.25" at its thickest point.

  • Those dents on the spine - bet someone used a hammer on it to cut through frozen bone. Great job restoring it.

  • I have a nearly identical one. From early to mid 1900s by my research. 1837 is merely the date the white company was founded. Thanks!

  • Did you add a lock to the case? Or at least a pin to stop the lid from falling off?

  • I'm very fond of your videos and work. As I resurrect this video with my question. How did you ensure accuracy of the blade shape for cutting on your cnc. Just a simple pic and a few test runs? I too have a machine and am curious. I often use Adobe capture. Thx

    • All I did was trace around the blade with a pencil onto a blank sheet of paper and then I scanned that into my computer. I imported the JPEG file into the vCarve software and then did a bitmap trace. Quite simple!

    • @@Woodumakeit well thanks. I do something similar. Appreciate the help. I just finished a clamping board because of your video you used for making chess board. It makes my cutting boards super easy to clamp and very flat. Keep creating great info!

  • Looks great. Curious, what made you go with a CA glue finish? I’m not familiar with that type of wood either.

    • CA glue provides a durable, acrylic-like finish that will hold up well in a wet environment. It's also easy to apply. If I hadn't used CA glue, I likely would have just rubbed on some mineral oil, but it would need to reapplied from time to time.
