It doesn't matter how big a lens you have you still have to get close to the subject, especially with birds. Most non wildlife orientated people just don't understand this basic requirement. So many photographers these days are looking for longer / lighter / faster lenses and cameras with massive amounts of pixels so they can crop the hell out of their images rather than honing their skills in getting closer. One of the best skills a wildlife photographer can learn is to know when the subject is just too far away to make a worthwhile image. Another problem prevalent with modern photographers is the basic lack of knowledge of physics and light. The longer the lens the greater the amount of air between lens and subject. All the crap in the air gets compressed and degrades your image. I have no doubt that that 800 is a good lens but you have to know how and where to use it.
I've only been watching to the 3:33 mark and Becky's photos have already made me glad I've ordered the lens. Now I'm REALLY anxious.

I would have liked to see it tested in less harsh light especially for wildlife. How would it cope in low light?
It is an interesting lens for sure that I would like to own at some point, but... It's never going to come before some of the smaller glass in the lineup.

Konstantin need proper long lens technic to aim on moving targets: 1. Both eyes open ! 2. Right eye looks in viewfinder looking thru the camera+lens 3. Left eye looks along the barrel of the lens (on the outside of the camera and lens. 4. Focus with the left eye on the subject and follow the subject by panning the camera+lens combo. 5. After some training you will be able to get the subject in the viewfinder. 6. Focus on the right eye. 7. Pan the camera+lens to keep following the subject. 8. Make the sharp picture. Works handholding the camera+lens or using with a tripod + ballhead/wimberley gimbal head. works with birds, dog, horses, etc. Try it, invest some training time with the technic, your photographs will improve. Suggestion from a Dutch Nikonian !!!

Hi Guys! I have a Z9 and 600mm F4VR, I am thinking to get 800mm . Have you tried to compare this lens to 600F4. Trying to see if it makes sense to switch. Also , what do you think of getting 400mm 4.5 and teleconv.? Thank you

You do get used to carrying a heavy lens around all day - eventually. I currently use the 200-500mm which is about the same weight. Nice film.
Hello Both, Just saying one thing I am starting to get to use more and more on Both my Z9 and Z7ii is, instead of chipping on the back screen chip though the EVF, were I can zoom in to check focus and then I am not having to pull down my camera check then lift it all back. So try not to scare the wildlife as well as not using battery life powering the big screen(Not a lot but it a it) as an old DSLR shooter it is a change in the how I shoot? Whit tiger lenses like my 500mm PF I think it makes a difference. Great images and supper video. Keep well, keep safe and on day Cons jokes will be funny :)
I'd love this lens but I can't bear the thought of getting rid of my 500mm f/4. The ability to easily hand hold is so tempting though.
Hand holding is overrated 😀 lol I have an 800mm lens that weighs less than 3 lbs.... And I never shoot without a tripod. Partly because my 800 is quite slow, and a tripod allows me to slow my shutter way down, but also, because I think a straight 800mm is "short" I use it on a crop sensor camera, for a 1280mm equivalent. Once you find a small bird in the frame with 1280mm, a tripod helps a lot to keep it there.
How fast the AF is would be interesting.
Does anyone notice the image completely warped at 6:58/ 6:59 point in the video? What is that?

W/o glasses I read BOOMM but it’s 800 mm
I have the 800nm f/6.3 but I don’t find it as useful as the 500mm f/5.6. There are situations where you really struggle to find the subject especially with birds fly left to right and vice versa and are relatively fast moving. Slower movers like Barn Owls are less of an issue. I have also experienced an issue that Nikon are looking into whereby in certain situations the subject is not sharp, even though the focus point is on the subject and the shutter speed is suitably high e.g. 1/2000 sec or higher. The issue occurs on very bright days when the subject is on the ground typically 10-20 metres away and towards to sun. Take a picture at a similar distance but away from the sun and it is fine.
heat distortion?
I am constantly disappointed with my D500 and 500mm f5.6 and its focus. I really struggle to get even static birds in focus dispute shooting at 1/2000 and f11. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
@@ChrisK-rz1sy why are you shooting at f/11? The 500mm f/5.6 PF is very sharp at f/5.6 so unless something is very close and you need the depth of field you should not need f/11. Have you AF Fine Tuned the lens and camera? There is an easy way to determine what the lens and camera are capable of achieving and that is to put the kit on a tripod, select manual focus, switch to Live View, select a subject with plenty of detail, manually focus and use the + button to zoom in and adjust the focus to get it spot on then take a picture at the lowest ISO e.g, 100, so for f/5.6 you should be able to get a good exposure at 1/200sec or thereabouts. If this image is sharp then take a picture using auto focus of the same subject using the Viewfinder. If this image is not sharp then you probably need to use AF Fine Tune. If the image is sharp then it is likely your technique. By doing these tests you should be able to determine why you cannot get sharp images.

Very interesting - but I would suggest that you shoot at least 1/1600 second with the 800mm and a full frame sensor. A tabletop tripod in the blind, and a tripod or monopod on the shoreline would have helped you produce sharper images. Did you shoot any wildlife sequences of your sheep 🐑?

At $8,499 Canadian dollars, this lens is best paired with a Z9. Have you checked the price of a replacement hood for this lens…

I'd love to try this lens. But Nikon needs to come out with a pro level crop sensor camera to put it on. A straight 800mm is almost never enough for me. And i think it would be crazy to spend $7000 on an F8 lens that always needed a TC on it. BTW, i used to use a 45mp Canon R5, and was a good thing i could crop a lot.... Because i usually had to crop a lot ! Now i shoot with a $1500 R7 which puts twice as many mp's on my bird, as did my $4k R5. Doing much better now.
