    • It wasn't the best disaster movie I've seen, I say that title belongs to San Andres, but I don't think this one deserved to flop. This one was more average to me, and had some awkward and corny jokes, some I laughed at, some I cringed at. And for people saying this movie was too unrealistic, I'll just recommend that they go outside and touch some grass, because this is a movie about the moon being a giant artificial ark for humanity with a star at its core, falling to Earth after being knock out of it's orbit, and it was built billions of years ago by a utopian human civilization that spanned the galaxy, wiped out by it's own hyper-intelligent AI technology, and seeded the earth with just the right ingredients for humanity to evolve in the same way as before so humanity could start over, and one day, hopefully destroy what destroyed humanity before. Realism is totally off the tables here. The most believable part is humanity being wiped out by its own AI. Realistically, the moon would have been ripped apart by the earth's tidal forces, and seismic and volcanic activity here on earth would be at levels not seen here since the earth was young. I'm not bothered by the wonky gravity in the movie, because IRL we also would have to throw _everything_ we know about the moon out the window. Honestly, what bothers me the most, is at 0:38 in this scene, that shockwave would have at least shattered every window in the city, and blasted building façades off. The Equitable Building should look a lot more heavily damaged as a result, and while I get and respect why they didn't destroy the OWTC, I think all the window should have been blasted out, and that's it. But 4WTC is having a bad day.

  • You wouldn't actually be able to see the surface of the moon. The moon would break apart completely when it passed the roche limit about 11000 miles above the earth's surface. The heat would be so intense that everywhere with a clear line of sight to the moon would light on fire and melt. Also, the moon is so large that it would look like and move like a liquid after it breaks apart. It would pour onto the earth's surface and the crust would liquefy. The moon and earth together would form an ovoid of molten rock that would eventually settle back into a planet.

    • Not technically true. It would actually depend on the Moon’s orbit’s rate of decay. If it were gradual and slow, then yes, the Roche limit would apply and the moon would break up. But if it were fast, which it is in this movie, the moon would only BEGIN to break up, but would still be more or less in one piece on impact. In fact, that’s pretty much exactly what we see in this scene. Also, the Earth wouldn’t become a ball of molten rock, the Moon is too small to cause that. It WOULD, however, gouge out a fairly enormous chunk of the planet and send it into orbit, and a sizeable piece of Earth would be liquid, but not the whole planet.

    • This movie is the farthest from the truth if this was to happen remember

      @1ctf749@1ctf749 Жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, it depends on the angle of approach. And the velocity. The Roche limit would start to break it up for the most part but if it's heading directly for the earth a lot of it's going to go right into it. It would be catastrophic worldwide either way. But simply grazing the Earth in this way would simply not happen as a lot of its surface would have been broken away at least at this point

    • @@MikinessAnalog and it would turn into a pretty ring system :) though before that, the approaching moon would cause our tides to become extremely chaotic & disruptive at any rate, if the moon magically *didn’t* break in the roche limit like that, it would probably be moving at tens of thousands of km/s when it hits, and also the atmosphere would literally be on fire

      @alexolas1246@alexolas1246 Жыл бұрын
    • Realistically, the moon would come nowhere near the atmosphere thanks to the Roche limit. Upon passing that limit, the Moon would break up into thousands of tiny pieces due to Earths gravitational pull being stronger than the Moons. After breaking apart, the pieces would form a massive ring around Earth, just like Saturns. Still, I like how this movie shows the Moon actually coming in contact with Earth. A sight to see I must say.

  • In my opinion, a solid movie. The people complaining about this movie probably haven’t even seen it. The moon in this movie is actually a megastructure with a dwarf star inside. The megastructure was created by a group of people being forced away by an alien tech monster worm that’s trying to get to the inside. It’s a freaking movie, not a physics class. People just need something to complain about nowadays.

    @oregano7120@oregano712012 күн бұрын
    • White Dwarfs have up the mass of the Sun, compressed down to a size smaller then the Moon. That is in fact, worse, so much worse then having the actual Moon crashing down to Earth. That would never happen because of Roche limit in case of the Moon. That does not apply to White Dwarfs, because they are more massive ones and then the Roche limit applies to Earth, since that is being less mass body in this.

      @jonfr@jonfr4 күн бұрын
    • I saw it in full. Is the movie entertaining? Sure. Is the concept of the moon/space megastructure colliding with Earth interesting? Sure, it's an amazing idea for a movie. It's also impressively dumb how this idea is realised here. Let's not pretend Moonfall is a masterclass in storytelling. And that's okay. It's perfectly fine to enjoy shit movies.

The entire plot was centered around this star, so I get the move to not have it collapse. Under normal circumstances, the earth is close enough to the star to be torn apart. 2) The crash Yeah, the moon will never be able to hit the earth. However the waves rising would be accurate. The: Seasons would change The tides would lower We would be lightless at night That would be a great movie in itself, but I like the one we got. Don't go into the nitpicky details-- This was clearly a movie that was made for fun. Criticizing the physics of it takes that away.

That could only happen if (1) the Moon would be more massive than the Earth and (2) most of the crust of both Earth and the Moon would be made up of some super-duper-hyper-strong material (Vibranium V.1000), with large chunks of normal rock placed on it. In the real world, would Earth collide with a Moon-sized body, pre-impact both would distort into an oval shape, causing massive earthquakes on the surface, and right after impact, small loose rocks might fall from the surface of the Moon-like asteroid (surface gravity 1/6th of the Earth) into Earth's atmosphere, but then a fireball from the impact point would engulf everything.
