A couple of years back in Super GT the recovery truck was DRIVING around the track at Sportsland Sugo - they'd just had a long safety car and then an incident, and there weren't many laps left, so they didn't want to call another safety car, recovered it, but you then had Jenson Button and I believe it was either Cassidy or Hirakawa in the Keeper Tom's, battling for position and suddenly having to dodge this massive pickup on track.

Not surprising that Mount Panorama at Bathurst featured so much here. That circuit tends to produce some incredible racing with its steep sections, blind corners, changes in weather between the top of the mountain and the bottom, the occasional kangaroo, and apparently even trees wanting to get into the excitement.

I was at that race where Cam Waters gave Shane Van Gisbergen a lift, it happened this year and the context is pretty incredible. SVG drives for the Holden factory team, and this was their last race in Adelaide (where Holden cars were built) because Holden is shutting down at the end of this year. He took the lead from Scott McLaughlin's Ford in the first round of pit stops, but at the second stop his car was underfuelled by a tiny amount, so he had to pit again and lose the lead (Supercars has a rule forcing you to use a certain amount of fuel, and he was given slightly less than he needed). After this, he made the chase of a lifetime to catch up to Waters and fight him for P3, but right as he went for the overtake a shock absorber failed on the kerb, putting him out of the race entirely with just a few laps to go.

MSVD Yepper, that and/or some other object or fluid on track cars are not supposed to drive over. (Sometimes those flags will be put out like that when it’s just raining if parts of the course are flooded to the point when rain tires will do nothing.)

@@NolanRempel "it is actually never supposed to be waved", that just isn't true. The red and yellow striped flag just means "lack of adhesion" and is a perfectly valid flag. It just means proceed with caution on that part of the track as there could be oil, water, debris etc. causing a hazard or lack of grip.

in 1987 during practice for the World Touring Car Championship race, British driver Andy Rouse hit a dog at that exact point where the tree fell

A couple of years back in Super GT the recovery truck was DRIVING around the track at Sportsland Sugo - they'd just had a long safety car and then an incident, and there weren't many laps left, so they didn't want to call another safety car, recovered it, but you then had Jenson Button and I believe it was either Cassidy or Hirakawa in the Keeper Tom's, battling for position and suddenly having to dodge this massive pickup on track.

He took the lead from Scott McLaughlin's Ford in the first round of pit stops, but at the second stop his car was underfuelled by a tiny amount, so he had to pit again and lose the lead (Supercars has a rule forcing you to use a certain amount of fuel, and he was given slightly less than he needed). After this, he made the chase of a lifetime to catch up to Waters and fight him for P3, but right as he went for the overtake a shock absorber failed on the kerb, putting him out of the race entirely with just a few laps to go.

Fun fact, the flag he was waving is a surface flag and it is actually never supposed to be waved because there’s a possibility of it being mistaken for a red flag since it’s yellow and red striped.

MSVD Yepper, that and/or some other object or fluid on track cars are not supposed to drive over. (Sometimes those flags will be put out like that when it’s just raining if parts of the course are flooded to the point when rain tires will do nothing.)

@@NolanRempel "it is actually never supposed to be waved", that just isn't true. The red and yellow striped flag just means "lack of adhesion" and is a perfectly valid flag. It just means proceed with caution on that part of the track as there could be oil, water, debris etc. causing a hazard or lack of grip.
That Ferrari slowing down before the finish line must be in the pages of history for being one of the most awkward moments in racing.
