  • I suffer from this with thousands of head injuries. I wanted to be the best football player ever. I started tackle at age 7 played every year to college. I can't manage a normal life, I am 34. I am getting worse. 22 years old the mental illnesses was diagnosed. No matter how good and simple I live my life I am getting worse. I was a quarterback that couldn't remember a play from the coach to a hundle. Coach in high school gave the wide recievers responsibility. Feels good that I'm not the only idiot. Doesn't change the frustration. I'm very damaged and very scared. Growing scared for me as I accept the truth by which is a new feeling because it was never about me. Scared for my loved ones because they never know what person I will wake up to be and them having to deal with my symptoms. I get it Junior Seau and Aaron Hernandez. Think about it everyday. Wish my sacrifice of my head and body paid millions for me and my family. I can't even hold a job at Taco Bell. Make millions but ur brain will be ruined. Us football players loved the game so much we forgot about ourselves. Don't ever hit ur head. Brain is to fragile.

  • I've suffered more than a few concussions due to violence and fighting on the streets, especially a experience where I was kicked repeatedly to the head while i was on the floor and I suffer with the same symptoms he speaks of, it's a hard thing to live with especially when you don't know what is happening. I always suffered with depression and issues with my character but after suffering concussions these problems worsened it's hard to speak of when you get them from fighting because basically it's my own fault but I was a troubled youth in the ghettos of California Los angeles, fighting is almost impossible to avoid in low income urban areas, but just as the speaker I share this comment incase anyone can benefit and learn from my mistakes

Mynwife and friends finish my sentences. I sometimes can't control my attitude / mood. I am 50 now and hope that I have many more years to live. Not knowing the future and my mental health is my biggest worry.

  • I knew a guy who had played contact football from the age of 7-19. He started acting erratically in his 50s. He left his job, his wife, and put himself in over 60,000 in debt. He finally saw a neurologist. They diagnosed him with early onset dementia. His MRI showed significant dark matter in his frontal lobe. It was heartbreaking to see him make very unhealthy choices. One of which was not going to the emergency soon enough when he fell sick. He is no longer with us. His grieving family misses him every day.

  • Things have changed so much into understanding the damage concussions can do . The first concussion I had was the worst and permanately damaged my neck as I went head over heels on a crosscheck I didnt see coming ( then again that's how they all are anyways ..lol) This is back in 1975 but when I got to the hospital the drs advice was for my mom to check on me every couple hours to see I'm breathing still . That was how a concussion was treated then and if I was conscious I'm sure the coach would have put me back in the game . I'm already showing neurological problems that they think are related to years of head trauma and I only wish I knew then what I know now .. The only reason cte , etc seems to be growing it's because people around my age suffered repeated concussions not knowing the risks . One thing I decided to do is found a hospital in Boston that specializes in concussions and I decided to donate my brain for research on concussions . Cant think of a better way to make lemonade out of lemons .

  • I love the game, played if from 7 to 14. My kid wants to play badly. I just can't allow it knowing what I know now. there is no technique that can make it safe, repeated collisions take a toll on the brain, period. That hit in his video is sickening...and I both delivered and received hits like that as a kid. No one was teaching anything correctly back then granted. But there is no safe way for your brain to play football.

    @TheDmonet@TheDmonet4 жыл бұрын
    • To some extent people still aren't teaching correctly. I think you're a good parent for taking your kids safety as a priority here. Most parents I know would have thrown their kids in because they're so proud to see their child on the field. I would say let them know the dangers of it. Show them this video and many videos like it. However, if they still want to I would let them when they're in high school.

    • @@rickywilliams1586 My kid wants to play tackle badly. He is very big for his age. I mean, really big like would probably have to play up just based on weight, and it's not blubber. I'm letting him play only flag. He has average speed and good hands so he is basically a short yardage receiver on offense. In tackle, he would be the premier force on any team of kids his age on defense and on the line...and I'm not sure any single kid would be able to tackle him. Funny thing is, there are some terrible head collisions in that sport because people aren't wearing helmets, everyone is chasing the ball in the air or diving for a flag at the same time. I've seen at least 8 head to head or shoulder to head collisions between practices and games in 2 months. None serious...only bumps so far, luckily. The coach begging the kids to stop diving and to be aware of their teammates and opponents are. Never thought this would be an issue, but I almost feel they should be wearing some sort of soft helmet.

      @TheDmonet@TheDmonet3 жыл бұрын
    • @Richard Stephens I posted a year ago saying I wouldn't let my kid play. He's now playing. When kids half his size are playing, I finally gave in. I've monitored every collision he's had, I'm at every game and every practice. Honestly he's had more blows to the head playing in our front yard. They are tiny and they are slow. There is much less contact in practice now compared to when I played. He's played 4 games and nobody really hits hard except for a one kid we've seen. Their speed and power coming off the line produces no collisions any worse to when they wrestle in my living room. I still hope he loses interest in it before they get big enough to do any damage, and the amount of practice time compared to game time is going a long way towards making him start to lose interest, as is one of his best friends not excelling at it while excelling at every other sport and probably dropping it after one season. If he shows desire to play next season, I will probably inject some of the concussion videos in to the mix to scare him. I review my decision every practice, every game, and he is on a short leash. to me the biggest issue is the sheer size of the helmets. It's pretty hard to not make contact with someone using your head when it disproportionately larger to the rest of the size of your body ESPECIALLY with kids. If someone could develop a softer more compact helmet, it would probably go a long way in making the game safer.

    • Let him play. At least let him once he gets to middle school. Football teaches life lessons. Also football teaches toughness nothing else can. I understand the risks but nowadays the game is different. My hs team only hits to the ground on occasion. Most of the time we stay up… as of this year, we have done 2 full contact practices but we aren’t allowed to do full contact for more than 30 min. Not to mention most times we hit bags. We are taught to tackle differently (wrap based tackles). Our equipment is safer. However, injuries still do happen. I have had concussions but tbh it isn’t bad because we know how to treat them now. I got hit so hard I could taste blood and see tracers but once I got pulled out the doctor diagnosed me with concussion and I was required to miss 2 weeks of school by medical clearance. I had to lay in bed with no stimuli per doctors orders. After one week I felt completely fine. The other week sucked because I had nothing to do. I suffered no mental consequences (memory loss, etc). I believe the risk of concussion is low because we now know limiting stimuli helps treat them

  • Thanks very much for sharing your story Kevin. Your symptoms sound so much like mine. I recently commented on a video done by Dr. Robert Stern - thought I'd share it here. I am of course interested in better treatment for those currently suffering from CTE, but equally concerned about the younger generation and prevention: ~~~ I am now 57 years old. Head injuries started around 7 years old (three concussions before 10, two of them unconscious). Then it was motocross, football, accidents - one of which was a fractured skull. CTE-like symptoms started to appear in my late 20's. Then the slow and steady decline. I have tried all the recommended remedies, and with much gusto and commitment. CAT scans, MRI’s, treatment plans. I have also tried so many non-conventional approaches. Without cynicism I can say conventional remedies are laughable…some caused more harm. It seems Robert Stern and for the most part the medical community mean well, but I feel compelled to say - this video (and so many others) are doing more of a disservice to those suffering from this little understood ailment. Your approach is superficial, barely one dimensional. This reminds me of my decades of struggle, watching my life and relationships fall away from me due to lack of understanding. Those that took the conventional approach in their half hearted efforts to help - diet, exercise, effort, positive thinking, etc. - all on the surface meaning well, but not really studying me and my issues, not listening...we just quickly sailed away from each other. You are pitting all those harmful concepts against those who are truly suffering, establishing further division. As a professional you have an obligation to see this side, look deeply, and do more. My heart breaks for all the others who are isolated, alienated and misunderstood. I am convinced there is an ever increasing number of people who feel like me. For this reason I feel a need to give this more exposure. I commend you for doing more than nothing, gotta start somewhere. Now I challenge you to take a closer look, this is a different animal. I have done work with water - I can "vitalize", or measurably increase the voltage of water. Plants fed this water show on average twice the biomass and nutrient density compared with control plants (and 2x the voltage). I suspect cannabis, in particular CBD, in conjunction with higher voltage water, will reduce inflammation and drive out tau protein and its nasty after effects. Any fatal / incurable disease is only labeled that until a cure is found.

  • I'm 22 years old and have had 2 documented concussions and 8 others that were undocumented. The most significant one was when I was 6; it left me unconscious for several hours and I got admitted to the hospital. After that moderate tbi I would go on to make a complete recovery but from the age of 18 and onwards is when the rest of the concussions started happening. I am definitely not same person that I used to be. I process things slower, my memory is not as good, and I notice that I stutter more so than I ever did. I just really hope that these symptoms go away with time or ease down. For males the brain doesn't stop developing until 25 years old so hopefully that does some sort of recovery for me.

    • Hey! This is actually my very first KZhead comment. I just felt the need to respond to you, as my situation is very similar - I'm 22 yo as well and have had several documented concussions and probably many undocumented ones due to amateur boxing in my teen years and downhill biking, as well as Tourette syndrome, which led to some (not so) funny head hits when I was a child. My thought process is noticeably slower, my short-term memory is almost non-existent and I have hard time speaking clearly - stuttering as well as forgetting the right words way to often. Unfortunately my coping mechanisms are linked with alcohol and binging on sugar - two of the worst possible things to do in this scenario, but I am trying to improve my life style, which is the only thing we can do. I hope we both make some recovery and live our lives as well as we can - unfortunately we will never be able to achieve our full potentials, but it is what it is. I would love to keep in contact with you and share information about recovery and etc. (Also I apologize for my not-so-great English, as it is not my native language)

I got hit in the posterior right side of the head. I was left with lump in the back of the head the size of a large marble. This was at the beginning of practice. I was all told that I played better after the hits. I was knocked unconscious 3 time and dazed after hits several times. I was first string. The last time knocked unconscious was on lock off. Full speed hit head on. The only game I didn't play.

What’s crazy is my mom knew I had concussions but she still forced me to play football I begged her to stop letting me play but she didn’t. Now I can’t even remember my family birthday family names, I can’t remember my childhood, everyday I deal with migraines, mood swings, anxiety and depression. I used to be a talkative person but now I’m always in my room and antisocial.

  • I’m glad I’m not alone, I did plenty as a kid to get my heavy bumps and hurts but when I was very very small I fell down 12 or so concrete steps and that was number one and it was heavy and by time I was 10ish I had suffered 3 legitimate concussions. Now I’m 27 and I know I’ve been concussed 5-7 times in my life and I struggled with mental health issues for many years and tried to take my life at 19. But a few years ago I began to calm down internally and it gave me new perspectives of the damage done to my brain and how little we know about our brains and most certainly how little I know about the brain and concussions compared to experts. Sometimes I fear it’s an excuse , but honest I exist with such tension and so much weight and throbbing from my head that I often find myself not being in the driver seat of my tone and emotional ranges. I find myself not knowing why I’m doing what I’m doing , I find myself mentally lost and scared inside and I find myself chasing a ghost , multiple ghosts... I find myself having to differentiate between mental health and depression and anxiety and anger issues I am genetically bound to and heavy damage my brain has suffered. I can operate at a very high level just fine , but also...I can’t okay...I basically can’t. I’m 27 I have no idea how I’m going to exist and survive in this world with my condition when nobody will recognize I even have a condition or a disability. Nobody will see it as a simple fact that my brain is all messed up and I am mentally and physically disabled by. I’m not saying I understand my problems. I’m just saying thank goodness I see people here saying that 1-20 concussions and saying small things about their pain but about their survival. Good luck.

I don't know if I had about 5 concussions(out cold about 5 times every practice and game) per day every day all season or 1 concussion per season. Except my senior year of high school the coaches would not let me have any contact due to breaking the sleds and injuring my teammates. I am so sorry for all the people I hurt. They have to protect their skulls, but the heavy helmets are a nightmare.

  • CTE is not caused by only concussions. It is more related to repetitive Acceleration/Deceleration micro-injuries caused by the violence caused by American Tackle Football. Helmets cannot stop CTE. The NFL has tried to institute rules to prevent head injury but these are totally ineffective. If you watch “Brutal hits in the NFL in 2023” you will see that 90% of dangerous blows to the head are not called or penalized. The game is incredibly violent, high-speed, muscular, financial, power-based, and incurable! This speaker has severe CTE and his condition is permanent and incurable. I wish this speaker good luck but he will most likely get progressively worse. He is another testament to the need to ban American Tackle Football and find better ways to have fun!

They already have ADHD to begin with (as do I) but regardless, I admit I’ve tried to steer them to sports and activities that don’t involve repeated blows and jarring of the head especially. Perhaps having ADHD myself, I’m particularly hyperempathetic because there can be some parallel symptoms and I know how challenging it can make life (despite some blessings). But I also feel like these studies are important so those who rightfully choose to participate despite knowing the risks are at least aware. i also work in rehab and see the effects of traumatic brain injuries daily. It’s nothing to take lightly.
