  • The big difference is the backhand. Novak does not need to run around his backhand to use his forehand, while Roger had to so he can be more offensive. Novak's backhand is greater than Fed's.

    • I mean I think now we can clearly state Djokovic has the greatest backhand of all time. Fed's was great too, and underrated throughout his career (amazing slice, drive, and ability to change directions at will), but Djokovic's relentless consistency, getting the ball deep shot after shot on the backhand side while rarely breaking down is unprecedented.

    • Maybe at times he was, but overall, he was pretty frail mentally. But that was partly - maybe 1/2 - due to Djokovic's play. Remember, Tsonga almost beat Djokovic the match before. There is no reason Federer should then lose to him in straight sets two days later. His confidence was in bandages from the USO semi - and I think, from the 2012 AUSO. When Federer is confident, he can play whole matches and whole tournaments striking the ball well, as you say - all the way to the final. He can blow guys off the court; even Nadal (like he did last year in Indian Wells and Shanghai - and in a set or two of the AUSopen final). Djokovic? I don't know that Federer can *ever* blow him off the court. He is able to sprint and stretch like gumby to reach shots that are winners to other players, which has a *huge* effect on Federer psychologically (and not just Federer). I think that is the crux of Federer's whole game - if opponents can get into his head and disrupt his genius, and his JOY, then they are more than halfway to beating him. Federer has done magnificently to shore that up, I believe, which showed up in 2017 starting with the Aus Open. … anyways - sorry, I am totally just rambling here. Lol.

  • As a Nadal fan and speaking objectively I feel that Fed stayed too long with the 90 sq.inch Wilson. He switched to the 97 in 2014 and I believe that he should’ve made the switch back around 2008. @SalomeMatosMourao@SalomeMatosMourao Жыл бұрын
  • It` a great matchup. Much better than Federer-Nadal because Nadal simply does not allow Roger to play. He pins him to his backhand side and just waits for a forehand down the line. How many forehands does Roger get to play against Nadal in a match ? Djokovic allows the opponent to play his game and goes man on man. Djokovic is also the only player who does not avoid Nadal`s forehand because he has a backhand to match it. In other words, Federer and Nadal can play their games and do what they do against Djokovic (but they`d better be good) while against each other they just try to "cripple" the game of the other guy and make him play as many backhands as possible. Those who say that Federer and Nadal bring out the best in each other are complete idiots. They actually try hard to bring out the worst in each other and always play to the weaknesses of each other by looking for the other guys backhand. Djokovic`s matches against either of them are much better to watch than the overhyped and overtactical Fedal matches.

    • It has been so long since Fedal match happened. Shanghai which was the last time they played each other was 16 odd months ago .Djokovic has the measure of both Federer and Nadal. I doubt Federer can ever catch up with Djokovic on H2H. Nadal 's chances are slim too on that count. Of course Federer can never catch up with Nadal on H2H.

  • thank you for uploading this, first of all. And, 48:30 - I just want to say - as smart as both those guys are, especially Courier … that was *not* Djokovic "swinging out of his shoes" to win that game! It was all Federer's fault - taking a mental break, really; thinking that he had won the set. Djokovic's backhand down the line was reckless, or, carefree - as they put it, correctly - but even the return at 0-30, Federer should have had that! He should have at *least* put it back in play, if not half-volleyed it to the open court with enough pace that Djokovic would have to hustle to get to. Every single point of that game except the dart of a backhand down the line by Novak was Federer utterly taking a mental break (and understandably so! I mean, this is a tense matchup, with Djokovic, and the first set didn't help things for Fed. The second set I believe he thought was his, and he was trying to coast SO EFFING BLATANTLY, and it cost him *big*). … All that being said, ofc respect to Djokovic for his level of play. But yeah, this was one of the more frustrating matches to watch, as a Federer fan. Especially since he took a bit of a mental break in the first set even! Had he consolidated his break, winning that first set would have been 90% likely, I think. Probably he would have been a favorite (~60, 65% favorite, IMHO) to win the match. … But, at any rate, this is ancient history. I just like to watch and analyze Federer matches, especially against the rivals, Djokovic and Nadal.

    • yeah, I tried to block a lot of matches like this out right away too. I think Federer just gets a little too nervous. Simple as that. He wants to win so badly (or maybe he dreads so badly the looming possibility of losing) that he gets nervous in the big moments against dangerous players, mainly Djoko and Nadal. I believe that, in the recent Cincinnati final, he tried to overcome the nerves by playing *uber* aggressive! that way he wouldn't have to think at all - and he wound up hitting himself out of the match - hitting so many balls long, and missing way wide; no control thru spin. But! the good news is that he played pretty awesomely (I thought) getting to the Cincy final, and he still somehow had a chance to sneak back into that match, despite playing like absolute garbage, to be honest. And, most encouraging, the main error which ruined his chances to win Cincy - if I'm right, the decision to play head down, full speed ahead style of tennis - is very easily remedied: you simply don't do that! And you accept the tension of the match, during the match. (Now that is the difficult part; I am Federer's age, and I understand that aging is tiring on the nerves just as much as the body). … OK I'm done. Lol. Just rambling here.

    • Federer is: - Careless when he gets ahead. Not allowing him to capitalise on breaks he got - Awful when he has break points. When he has a break point he will almost always play a defensive point, resulting in Djokovic dominating the rallies. Just watch Federer when he has a break point. He suddenly starts slicing when there’s no need. - Really bad when he’s down a break. He surrenders a set way too easily. A trait that Nadal and Nole don’t have. - As I’ve noticed, he’s surprisingly nervous under pressure. Far too nervous, I would argue. The only thing he does well under pressure is serve. It’s insanely frustrating to be a Federer fan, because he has the level of tennis to beat Nole more than he did. However, he lacks the mental strength to do so. USO 2010 could have been his, USO 2011 should have been his, RG 2012 could have gone to four or five sets, Wimbledon 2015 should have been his, USO 2015 should have been a tighter match. You can tell me Nole’s level was too high and you’d be absolutely right. However, it’s not Federer’s tennis that can’t keep up with Nole, it’s his head.
