A German patrol comes across 2 US soldiers trapped in a minefield, one of their comrades having already fallen victim to the deadly ordnance. Little do they know that a surprise is in store for them.
Another scene from the 1970 classic 'Kelly's Heroes', which remains one of my favourite war movies to this day.
Not a M1 Garand or Kar98k in sight, just people living the full auto life
There is one guy who has a m1 grand.
With magazines with 10 000 bullets
There are plenty if you look, just none seen firing.
In this case, that's actually intentional: Earlier in the movie you hear the leader request for a bunch of Thompsons from a quartermaster.
@@Soundwave3591 Yup. I think the point is that Kelly's crew aren't exactly a conventional outfit.
It is amazing how every soldier on both sides have a automatic weapon. No one uses bolt action or semi auto rifles.
yeah like most German soldiers had kar 98ks or other bolt actions.
Was just about to say this. So fuckin' weird.
The US Sniper soldier was carrying a Mosin/Nagant. Remember, at the beginning, Kelly asks Crap Game for 15 Thompsons and a couple of 30 cal machine guns. I would speculate the the Germans, leaving from a fixed base, going to investigate an event at the mine field, may very well have chosen the MP40s, in anticipation to a fire fight. These are not general, every day front line units, at this point.
@@jason60chev On your last point, that was not at all the normal formation of a German infantry platoon. Out of a squad of 10 men, I believe only 2 carried MP40s as the most common formation. I could understand why they (the Americans) might've wanted to have submachine guns for such a close quarters ambush though. It just looks weird from a historical sense.
And no one reloads lol
Rough translation for what the German Lieutenant was saying: Halt! (Looks through binocs). What are they doing there? (Looks through binocs again). Sargent, take six men out there and have a look. (German sargent) Yes sir.

@@foreverblueclassics It did... I've heard stories about him breaking up the other actors on the set. They had to re-shoot some scenes because of it. Actually, Rickles was a trained actor and could perform quite well in various types of roles. For my taste, as far as humor goes, a little of him went a long way. But I did always admire his talent... unlike many comics, his style was, for the most part, unscripted. He pretty much "winged it" in his act, because his "shtick" really depended on that particular audience.

One mine goes off and brings a 3 vehicle quick reaction force. A pitched battle with MG's grenades, and lots of SMG's? - No response!

I don't think anyone, who had been in continuous combat, had regulation anything.
The German gunner is Unterfeldwebel(no pips on shoulderboard), not Oberfeldwebel. Oberfeldwebel has 2 pips on the shoulderboard, Feldwebel(NCO standing behind the gunner) having 1 pip on the shoulderboard.

And long may it continue in this form. All wars should be fought on the silver screen with no one really being hurt lol.
i remember watching this on tv...
It's on in the UK often.
No iron sights were used that day
Just a question: was it realistic in combat to "sweep" with machineguns, in stead of aming and shooting...?
If you have an obvious target you aim at it. But you can use a machine gun to lay down a covering fire to pin down the enemy.
It was called "brooming".
nope. in the Wehrmacht it got hammered into the soldiers to conserve ammunition and fire only short 2-4 round bursts if neccesary, otherwise use single fire. this is relevant for the SMG´s but also heavy MG´s like MG34 and MG42. and i bet on it, that the US Army did the same with their soldiers. Uncontrolled spray and pray is a hollywood myth.
Machine guns were - by design - inaccurate. As one veteran explained it to me, "What's the point of killing the same guy three times? Much better to spread the bad news around." Having said that, short bursts were the order of the day. Sustained firing, which is the stuff of too many films, would cause the barrel to overheat in record time. Having to change the barrel in the middle of a fire-fight is something best avoided.
@@lomax343 the innaccuracy is overstated tho. i have the MG Gunner Qualification in the Bundeswehr with the MG3 on Lafette and Bipod. The MG3 is by design just a modified and modernised MG42. For minimum qualification you had to hit 4 out of 5 Targets on 300-900m, for that you got 15 rounds in the belt. the MG42/MG3 is precise enough to engage and hit targets on 900m with 2-3 round bursts if you are a trained gunner.
