But I really enjoyed the TV series of them. I would guess that's from where most the Digimon enjoyers come from, not from the games.

It doesn’t require any prior knowledge of digimon and is an incredible story. Though my advise is if you do play it avoid any spoilers. Its a one of a kind experience

    • I think the biggest problem is the games are clearly designed for a predominantly japanese playerbase, so they tend to lean in to the grindiness and weird jrpg plots. Which sucks because the underlying game mechanics are actually SUPER fun. You just gotta suffer through the other stuff to really get to enjoy them -_-

      @flashfreak62@flashfreak624 ай бұрын
    • Is the opposite of pokemon fandom in that sense. While pokemon fans are all about their favorite generation referring to the games and merchandise, maybe recalling that the anime was not terrible then. Digimon fans will go gaga when discussing their favorite anime seasons and maybe know about the games, but they are rarely passionate about them

      @beingroomtv@beingroomtv4 ай бұрын
    • @@flashfreak62 Nah, the main problem people disagree is that the games are a large variety of genres. The same people who are into tamogachi games are often not into RPGs and vice versa even though there will some overlap. Pokemon and other game series don't usually face that issue because if anything they are often too much the same.

      @Aklaif@Aklaif Жыл бұрын
    • I think a lot why we put up with this kind of shit a kids, is that (if you were lucky, like me) we just had soooo much time to kill, and it didn't matter that much if the game wasted a lot of it with grinding or pointless fetch quests. I played a lot of Runescape, WoW, early Pokemon games, etc growing up, but I wouldn't consider touching those as an adult with a full time job - my free time is more valuable than that now. I still occasionally play Pokemon Showdown, though, because I can just do the actually fun parts for me: build teams, then fight strangers with them!

  • Cyber Sleuth is a good game, particularly on the switch where you can cheese XP by leaving your system on. The only complaint I had about it was some very spotty localization. The Golden path through the story is fine but any side road you travel, and you have to travel on a lot of them, get very "all your base are belong to us" very fast.

    @thenobleoak@thenobleoak4 ай бұрын
    • To be fair the reason for that was because Cyber Sleuth was never meant to come to the states. It was originally Japan only until a massive petition came out. Bandai Namco saw how big it was and said alright and released a, admittedly very rushed english version. But because it sold so well in the states that it's "sequel" had an actual localization budget behind it.

    • At the beginning of the video, when I was trying to think of what the best Digimon game would be, having played Digimon World 2, 3, Championship, Dawn and Dusk and knowing stuff about 1, I was thinking that Dawn/Dusk would be the best choice, because they don’t get out of control as easily as 1 and Championship do, and they’re more fun than 2, and they’re not a hellscape like 3. I remember really enjoying playing through both Dawn and Dusk-I played Dusk with an Action Replay when I was a kid, and then I played through Dawn without any hacking just a couple of years ago-so I was really surprised that someone who seems so much more experienced with gaming than me would have such a bad reaction to it...

      @autumnphillips151@autumnphillips151 Жыл бұрын
    • @@autumnphillips151 you also have to remember Dawn and Dusk were made with Digimon fans in mind. If you know how evolution works in a general sense in the franchise(as an example) then the evolution trees and stat requirements might not be as daunting as to a new player, but if your new then without a proper tutorial it could come off as tedious since it could get very confusing.

  • Jaiden, if you haven't been completely put off of Digimon, I would suggest watching a season of the show, any season will give you the base concept well enough, though there is story so you may be lost if you start later, although Digimon Tamers is my favorite series. Either way, watching some of the show should give you a base concept of digimon as a whole so you're not going into a game completely blind.

  • Digimon World is a chill game. It is an accurate representation of the Digimon concept. Everything you do in the game does advance your progress. A mon dying is a part of it. The cycle of raising a mon effectively is the main gameplay loop. Then there's exploration that results in getting things that make raising a mon much easier. I would recommend going in blind, but having a guide ready if you ever feel a little stuck or confused. In general the game gives you a lot of info if you talk to everyone in the city. The slow upgrading of the city is also really rewarding. Raising mons may feel like a bit of a grind, but you get into a comforting daily routine.

  • I feel the reason it was so difficult to find a game people unanimously liked is because Digimon has a record of changing up the formula with almost every new game. So you'll get people that love the tamagotchi like experience of Digimon World or those that like the traditional JRPG style of Cyber Sleuth. While some variety is nice in a franchise on occasion, the level Digimon has taken it to fans don't know what to expect so there are many folks with strong opinions on what makes a good Digimon game.

You 'capture' digimon and you level them, you evolve them, you battle, you grind. It has everything a digimon game should have. It does feel a little bland compared to pokemon games, but it is the best. By bland I mean it seems very mechanical.

    • I would honestly say to a pokemon fan that Dusk and Dawn are the most pokemon like of the games. Definitely pick up and put down type games, similar to how pokemon could end up being a grind fest before exp share was a thing. However, I'd reccomend the Switch bundle of Cyber Sleuth and Hackers Memory. I'd bought the latter on ps4 because it looked like a 3d Dusk (and was on sale). But the pick up and put down part makes it more palatable than, say, a full blown video game (if saying that even makes sense, they're not a six hour session, more a, couple of hours before work the next day, kinda pace.) Cyber sleuth takes the DS game and makes a lot of it better. Sure it can get repetitive, but at least it's far less frustrating. Hackers Memory gives new side quest mechanics too. I watched most of the first run on TV, quite a lot of the second, and some of tamers. Had the clip on digivice with renamon on it in high-school, it went off a few times at almost the worse times haha. But like, I honestly prefer the games after playing them. I think the translation of the anime was aimed at younger kids and the age demographic never went up. Tried to watch the ghosts season and couldn't get past three episodes. Probably why my mother couldn't stand digimon as a whole and always changed the channel xD

  • It's really interesting how Jaiden's experience shows that digimon is not a videogame franchise. It's a tamagochi franchise that has a lot of anime adaptation, most of them completly independent from each other, and sometimes gets some games, most of them in different genres.

    @danielcampos1715@danielcampos1715 Жыл бұрын
    • Well the one she is playing is a part of the Digimon story series a long chain of loosely connected games. Typically connected by character cameos or the plots of Yggdrasil/king drasil and are all rpg style games. The World games are traditionally an open world breeder game closer to a console tamagotchi. Then you have rumble games which are the fighting game of the franchise. Then you got survive the first visual novel. Trouble is these games are not like Pokémon and usually can’t be beaten without grinding and planned and raising for certain evolution paths. You will have maxed out Digimon by the end.

That being said, that is thankfully being (somewhat) managed now in terms of consistency. EX: Story games are traditional rpgs, while the current World games (Re:Digitize, Next Order) are related to the original Digimon World. As for Survive, it was supposed to be a side project. *Also, the Digimon lore will continue to be insane with or without the Digimon games. Even in the first series, the lore is a lot, especially if you go through the Adventure Light Novel.*

My grandma was going on holiday to the US, so I asked her for one thing- if she could find it at a used games store over there could she get it for me. She found it on the last day, after calling around several stores, and driving all over Florida to find it. That was the best birthday gift ever and I played it for MONTHS SOLID. I loved it. I loved the art style, I loved the story, even the little fetch quests. I got so good at memorizing the maps out of muscle memory. Now that she's no longer with me, I hold this game, box, manual very dear to my heart... partly for the countless hours of joy it gave me, and partly for the effort my grandma went through to get me a copy. Starting the adventure with your favorite partners make the experience way more satisfying. Also the game is actually very easy to break XD. Just keep creating digimon and DNA evolve your mains to those just created to improve their stats. You can easily get a rookie way stronger than a champion or even ultimate/perfect. I know that the game NEVER explains anything but as long as you can discover the mechanics and some secret tips, the game is quite easy.
