The iPhone 12 released to much fanfare with a new form factor in the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Along with a new squared-edge design, one of the headlining features was the return of Apple’s famous MagSafe brand; however, rather than being the MacBook-friendly charge port that would prevent your computer from falling off of a countertop, this new iPhone MagSafe design permits the usage of handy magnetic accessories like the iPhone MagSafe charger and MagSafe cases, MagSafe car mounts, and other MagSafe accessories. But there’s a problem with MagSafe. It’s just... well... it’s limited by physics. How has Apple tried to combat some of these hurdles and how has their selection in magnet chemistry, placement, surface area, and depth affected how strong these magnets attach? Let’s find out today as we learn about magnets, shear force, pull force, plating, and what that means for the best iPhone MagSafe accessories!

There is no better, more reliable method of electrical connection then a physical one. Wireless charging consumes 47% more power then a wire, not to mention the cost. Also a port allows you to back up your phone even if the screen is not functional.

Two important uses (besides charging) for the Lightning connection are Apple Car Play (This only works via a wired USB-C to lightning connection in my brand new VW T6.1 for instance and will not work over bluetooth) and data connections that take audio or video over USB (eg I use a USB to Optical Out S/PDIF via the lightning to USB camera adapter with my iPhone). I mean first of all, there are bound to be countless Apple users who do have lightning cables but don’t have usb c cables, and would need to buy new cords in this legislation aimed at preventing people from having to buy new cords. Oh the irony. Second, imagine if the EU had decided to enact this legislation ~5 years ago. We’d be stuck with micro-usb phones. Who’s to say that in 5-10 years when the next usb does to usb-c what usb-c did to micro-usb that the EU will accept/recognize any potential improvements and let it happen. I have no trust in politicians being able to understand and act on engineering decisions. Not for nothing either because in Australia you can’t change your rims on your car because of some backwards legislation written no doubt by some politician that had zero understanding of why such a law is ridicules.
