Two years ago, the painting titled “Salvator Mundi,” set a record as the most expensive piece of art ever sold at an auction. The image of Jesus is one of fewer than two dozen works attributed to renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci. But in a new book, one author paints a different picture, questioning if the painting is a genuine Leonardo. Author Ben Lewis joins "CBS This Morning Saturday."

It must be impossible to determine if the painting is by da Vinci or partly by da Vinci and partly by his students, or fully by his students. But, apparently: The world needed a new da Vinci. Christie's needed the commission. A prince needed to spend some money.

da Vinci's studio worked with artists like Bernardino Luini and Giovanni Boltraffio... great painters of the 16th century High Renaissance !
There is absolutely no provenance and "the experts" make incorrect attributions all the time. Just look in the basements of countless museums...
No, They have known for over 100 years that he did a paint a painting of The Savior Jesus Christs. Through Historical archives, Letters, and Historical documents. So they knew it had existed. Do you have any Idea how much art of Famous Painters were stolen during WW2 by the Nazis. That hasn't been found yet! We are talking Billions worth of Art. But I just read who were actually the ones that Confirmed and agreed that it was a Real Leonardo Da Vinci I think it was 25 of the Best experts from that Period, on top of Individual Da Vinci Scholars, All of the Italian experts and Historians in the time of Da Vinci were alive. Also validated it, Through their Historical documents. They were extremely skeptical, when they first heard about the Painting. They were asked by the Italian Government to give their opinion on top of the Information they could provide to see if any indications that it could be Authentic. They looked at everything, X-rays, Parchment, Colors, Took Test of the Paint, Color composition, And compared all of it with his other paintings. We are talking about looking at the individual air bobbles through Microscopes, and looked for any sign of Forgery. They also came back and Validated it was a Real Leonardo. I think its funny, That just because one expert wrote a book. And questioned the Confirmation. By research he had done on his own, He has never done any test, or Looked at it in real life other than when it was up for sale. I'm sorry, He ask some valid questions but it is exactly that he just starts the process of discrediting the Validation, Done by the best independent Experts in the world, That have spend their entire life to studying Leonardo Da Vinci and Italian History. And how did he do that? By writing and publishing a Book about it, And then goes on a promotion tour of the book on different Media Sites. Where he questions the authenticity to us Normal People, Who doesn't comprehend that any painting can be worth 400 Million USD. And have been Scammed and Manipulated by Companies, Banks, Billionaires and Governments all our life. Of course normal People will jump on his side, Because we want the Rich to feel how we feel. And if one of them bought a Painting for 400million he is an idiot. But to Discredit the best experts in this field, that actually did all of the investigation and research from the Fibers in the Parchment down to the Air bubbles in the paint. and they say it is from the period and the colors misture, what they consist off and the Dating of all those test shows it was painted in that period with materials from that period. I think its an Historian that wrote a book and saw it as a opportunity to cash in big, By being the guy who claims its fake.

The Louvre is now saying (as depicted in a new documentary) that it was from Leonardo’s workshop and not only by the painter himself. Ouch!

The painting has been excessively (and poorly) restored. It's become a hybrid, in which some areas have been painted by a master and other areas by a clumsy restorer, which overall gives the painting a perplexing appearance. Images of the painting before the current restoration show significant damage. Filling in the damage is not the proper way to restore a masterpiece and preserve its integrity.
She destroyed it or its a copy. I have photos ive compared. Everything is changed. She even added ripples on the shoulder that werent there. She should be held accountable. The face went from depth and brilliance to a flat puddle of over laid paint.
@@treatb09 Yes, the face is terrible, which was the first thing that made me wonder if this was a Leonardo. But the hands and some of the clothing are done very well. Then when I saw how much it was restored I understood: what's left of Leonardo's work is good, but the restorer's painted-in areas (including much of the face) are awful.
@@beebee3333 i compared various pictures. In some clips. Maybe it was here. They showed a change between the two. And you can slo mo it to see they are two different paintings.

Poorly restored? I have stood 6 feet away from it and it made me weep. It is breathtaking.
I mean was it overpriced yes, overvalued, no. The guy doing the auction was instigating to get the price higher and even took a sip of water to quench his thirst after knowing he had suckered these guys into going higher and higher.
I’m so glad, this is the same auction that auctioned my dad’s painting for 31,000 dollars..what a difference but still a good price.
It is very interesting that restoration is considered acceptable in the art world. It other collectables, say sports cards- this is considered extremely taboo. In fact, there are many companies that are being exposed because of this.
That's a very interesting excellent point you make.. Sooner or later with 4D printers - who knows what is authentic or what. I've been told of examples of Ultrq Ferraris being cloned with old parts and 1960s steel parts to make them appear original and unaltered. Even chassis numbers switched etc. Very Very Murky World
I mean paintings are one of a kind, each one is unique, so i guess restoration respecting the artist original intention is always good. Sports cards are different as in there are many produced of each so it's more similar to a economy
The painting clearly looks like the work of Leonardo's student, and young lover, Gian Giacomo Caprotti da Oreno, better known as Salaì. Anyone who knows Salai's work, can immediately see his hand here!
No one ever knows if Leonardo had lovers. He would spend time with his students but stating that he had “young lovers” is kinda bold to say.

Wait..... The Mona lisa has fingerprints all over it when Da vinci used his fingers to create texture and mixed colors. So why don’t they see if it matches? So did they restore it to the point where none of his prints can be found on the texture of the paint? That would be convenient. There is a documentary of this on how they proved one painting is real by matching the prints Da vinci left on the paint. I remember the narrator saying it’s better than a signature.
There’s no way to prove that the fingerprints are da Vinci’s. There’s the issue of handlers, assistants, later restorers and owners who may have imparted finger prints. And in any case one must have a complete print to discern any significant identification. And I don’t think da Vinci used his fingers to mix colors directly onto the board, he probably mixed colors on his palette then applied with brush (if he used his fingers at all). And using your fingers to create texture and mix colors doesn’t leave full prints.
I really dont get how it was sold for 1k...even if its not by Leonardo, but its likely somehow connected to him, its 500 years old and still looks really cool in its own way...and now when it seems like it was painted by Leonardo everybody says how beautiful it is 😅 wth

When it sold for $1,000 it was an almost completely destroyed old painting by an unknown artist. Now it has been completely overpainted and sold with the false attribution to Leonardo. If Saudi Arabia tried to resell it today it wouldn't go over 50 million.

Christie's was able to sell for $450M plus a painting that is merely "attributed" to Da Vinci and heavily restored and modified. That is salemanship at its finest. Same auction house that sold the suflower painting to a Japanese that is heavily criticised as fake.
I think it's one of those PAINT BY NUMBER things they had out 50 or 60 years ago. I opted for the Grandma Moses one with the farm scene.

For me the unrestored painting would have had much more value. Now it is kind of "abused" and "stained". I would enjoy much more to see and have it in its most original form than have some people overpaint it. What a shame!

I agree. That would definitely add to the mystique of the painting. But the argument to that would be verifying it's authenticity. So in turn they would NEED to restore it. I like the idea of it being untouched though.

There is no way that is by the genius Leonardo da Vinci. Pause at 2:40 and take a good look at the eyes. For one thing, the right eye is significantly higher than the left eye. And you can also see how badly and amateurish they are painted. As a portrait artist, for me it is very important to align the eyes and render them as life-like as possible, being that the eyes are the most important feature in a portrait. It is clearly the work of one of his students that tried to emulate his style, or by a forger from the past that tried to fake a da Vinci for profit.

hold on, there's 'restoration' where you just clean up gunk and wear and tear. then there's painting over the original, which is the case here. so your telling me, some poor bum spent $450mill on a partial davinci and some random lady restorer lol. get a refund, they just got prank'd.
the smile and the the general androginy of the picture points towards leonardo... but as a fact, if you look at the eyes, it's so damaged that you can't really look at it for 2 long without getting the feeling of being fooled. Be it a Leonardo or not, there is no way this painting should be worth more than many others painted by similar geniuses that are in very good shape. I see art of marketing in display here, rather than art itself

"Salavtor Mundi" paintings were workshop pieces during this time. So were Madonna and Childs. Leonardo never painted a "workshop" image in his life. He reinvented painting. MBS paid $400M for a work by the school of Leonardo.

They don't care what's painted on the canvas. Currency goes up and down, but paintings, especially ones from Da Vinci will always continue to rise as it ages. If it ever does come out that this is 100% legit no questions, then the price value will skyrocket. I also assume they wanted to keep it out of the Vatican. Those two were fighting it out past the 300 million mark. It was cut throat, 400 million is higher than some countries GDP. The fact they would even think about paying that kind of money they had to have been at least 95% sure it was real.
?, ?, It never went on display at Louvre Abu Dhabi. I have been waiting for that since the sale. But it seems like it dones the yacht of Mohammad Bin Salman the Saudi Prince and that Abu Dhabi prince had only did the bidding on his behalf. So it’s gone in private collection now. Not in museum.

People spend their whole lives to be able say and try to understand, explain the meaning and go into detail trying to figure out what these famous paintings mean, yet I think these famous artist were just cracked out and liked to paint a lot and I bet Leo was just like. “Imma paint da Jesus n sip my wine” and he’d laugh if he knew someone payed that much

I guess no one would dare to touch it. Of course the last restorer realized that, but it's a high-stakes move to alter it, I doubt anyone would.
As someone who draws portraits the eyes to me is an extremely sensitive area to refine once you've laid your initial strokes. One stroke or glint and you alter the whole mood of the art

There is no hard evidence (provenance, original documentation such as a bill of sale) that proves this was done by Leonardo or even by his studio. 80-90% of the painting (including the entire face which is the most important area in a portrait painting) was repainted less than 20 years ago. If it was ever even touched by Leonardo, it is now a contemporary painting. Given the huge sums of money at stake, all of the vested interests had an incentive to declare this a Leonardo. But a lot of experts disagree. There is no consensus.

Come on... It's price is based on the mystery... The price is justified as we are talking nonstop on it’s authenticity. Monalisa was just another piece of art before it was stolen by an Italian. It became a masterpiece after 1911. That doesn’t mean it’s the best art ever. The value of an artwork is mostly based on the fame of the painter and the intrigue it could create among public, which Salvador Mundi did, does and will do. I see a potential in it of even surpassing the fame of Monalisa.
