To me, the fact that the game is pitch black at night makes it better. The reason is that it is simply realistic and adds to the horror. Ofc there are nights that aren't pitch black, but they still are quite dark.
While I agree darkness makes things scarier, this attempt at realism hurts the game in my opinion. If the game stays as dark as it is, when people stream it or upload any content, no one will be able to see what's going on. Case in point, I couldn't even see the tornado. Having more moonlight outside while letting the darkest places, like basements or closets etc., be the only places that are pitch black would create more dynamics in the lighting overall and allow for more layers of fear.
@@voidboi0 Adjustable light levels could fix most of the issues in this regard. Keeping reasonable light dynamics also should be done. As for the nocturnal tornadoes, well, they are basically invisible irl (that's in part the reason why the December 10-11 2021 tornado outbreak was so deadly). However, as said previously, adjustable light levels could solve the issue of e.g. running into a tornado while escaping from a tripod.
Especially when you consider this is all post-EMP so there is zero light pollution. The only light should be from the moon and fires that are burning.
Glad you're liking the tripods and the damage effects for them! Took me a while. Another detail I added that's hard to tell in the video is how the textures of the tripods will show more damage the more they get hit. And when they're destroyed the glass also gets shattered.
Yeah great work Floris! I did even notice the damage on the skin texture of the downed tripod, really visible on the legs up close. Keep up the great work!
I didn't notice it before, but those green impulses washing over a damaged tripod revealed some kind of writing on their "necks" (30:28). I love how every tripod seems to have its own registration number.

That's amazing, this type of attention to detail is what drives me into the games that I play frequently, it's all about the immersion into the world, the "world building". In derail valley simulator, each car has a registration, do they need to? Not really, but it's there, they're all unique, each locomotive is unique, I hope we'll see something similar in this game.

I personally think if tornadoes come into contact with the tripods.. the shield should activate and protect the tripods from getting blown over or damaged.. but I also love the idea of them avoiding tornadoes too.

When the tripod is taken down, you can see the missiles streaking towards it, but you see no tracers. With the sound of gunfire going off in the background, you would figure you would see the tracers and shells hitting the tripod. Just a little added depth to show the desperation of the military in throwing everything they have at the Martians.

I was watching the stream you uploaded that looked at this new footage and I agree with all the things you enjoyed as well as all the critiques you mentioned. I cannot help but give constructive advice when I see something that could be improved that is newly implemented in this game only because I love this concept and want to see it grow and evolve just like all the rest of the fans including yourself. There have since also been other suggestions such as making tripods more reactive when directly hit by heavy artillery, like missiles and rockets, or something that I actually suggested on discord because I am a big weather nerd is to clean up the look of the tornado a bit at the top area where the funnel cloud just sort of disappears into the storm, making like a wall cloud with a mesocyclone surrounding the tornado just to give it some more depth and ominous feeling, instead of just a really powerful dust devil. I know Raf can only take on so much at a time and these features I know will be cleaned up in due time, but just for the sake of the fact that he not only is making the best War of the Worlds gaming experience but one that is filled to the brim with frantic chaos and things to do and see, is just remarkable and will continue to be when this game finally lands on early access and beyond.

The distortion you mention in the audio is not clipping, that's intentional sfx distortion. Clipping manifests through actual audible clips that make speaker crackle like noise and are instantly familiar if you listen through something on actual sound monitors/headphones. You can also easily tell its not clipping because the distortion only affects the mid frequencies towards the "peak" of the Tripod horn, meanwhile the subbass and top end of it are fine. Actual clipping will cause your entire frequencies to clip in an unatural way. All the distortion in the game is intentionally added and I really love it because that's how sounds are IRL. If a giant tripod horn goes off in close proximity, that sound is not gonna reach ur ears clean, there's too many frequences so your ears are gonna distort it. Not to mention how the enviroment also distorts noise.
I can see that. I guess I'm just not the biggest fan. I don't see the need to be this attentive to realism for this aspect of the game. Still early, so hoping to see other aspects raise to that level. Not a huge deal though. To each their own.
@@voidboi0 Oh yeah I agree with the thing about realism. I just personally really like the sound effect as a sound engineer since it makes the Tripods feel that much more like they are there. That and I wanted to clarify it's not a technical mistake like clipping is.

War of the worlds 2005+Twister 1996= this. I honestly cant wait to see a group of aliens get suck into the tornado and go flying. Reguarding the harvesters, i like how when you get pulled into the ummm machinery, you just see orange liquid and some lights. Best to keep the interior a mystery. Regarding the uberpods, I really like the new horn varient. I would be honestly terrified to hear that in the middle of the night. Regarding the pods falling, I also like how they look when they acually fall to the ground. I wonder though if the aliens will come out of the front door in a later update and take one more observation at us before dying. Ya know. Probably try to warn us that more of them are coming. Anyways nice video!

I have to say, when I first saw this new update video it was roughly around 3am cause the next day was my day off n I had headphones on n many musical cues gave me jump scares. Like the probe searching the house, the uberpod heat ray firing as it spotted Raf, it was so amazing. My interesting idea is this, even though the war machines (tripods) are taken down n decommissioned and either the aliens escape/die off. How interesting/insane would it be to hop into the tripod n power it up again lol. Infiltrate the invasion. Lol. Just a funny thought. This game seriously looks so cool n I so can’t wait to play it.
Yeah I had that thought when I first found the game too. Raf has already said that he's not gonna do something like that because humans wouldn't know how to pilot a tripod.

I also don't know if its in the film but when the walkers fall down, i'd love to have some really nice audio - but if it were the exact same clip over and over it wouldn't work, perhaps the strain on the legs can play a different clip each time, and when it hits i need to hear it. But yeah, Cars moving faster when tipped over the Design of people would use a small model update perhaps high res textures when your up close, and they can look like blobs at a distance. The 360 noscope shot after the flare rather than just poof i'd like to see a burning/fire/turning into dust if you get turned into burnt toast, and the building should get toasted also, I could understand if the walker just targeted the nearby building and reduced it to a flaming hulk.
Raf has thankfully changed it to target the flare. Yeah in that situation, I would accept a tripod targeting a building it thinks some is in and you just have to escape the collapsing/burning building instead of getting aimbotted.
@@voidboi0 Yeah, i think if buildings do get impacted by heatbeams they should be set on fire rather than blown to pieces otherwise taking cover wouldn't be helpful. Though having them blow up buildings with their beam would be really cool, i wonder if its possible, as buildings don't seem destructible as of yet, burning them down in fire could be one way of removing them without giving them a falling animation. Or perhaps if a tripod puts it leg through a building it can cause a fire (hitting a gas main) which sets a fire and makes it burn down. - that said until the beams can blow sections off high rises i don't think the game will be finished lol But i also understand the poly budget went to the walkers, so buildings being a little.. paper and unrealistic when blasted/blown up is a comprise i'd be okay with.
- i think a big reason people think the games progress is slow or that some things arent good enough is simply because raf has simply been posting a new gameplay video every month. But if you take a look at where the game was just a year ago it shows for itself that the game is making good progress. Its good to hear the criticism though to make the game the best it can be - i think the reason the tripod aimbotted him was because he popped a flare - if tripods paths away from tornados then i cant wait to see a tripod running away from a tornado heading its way
He has since changed it to target the flare.

My passion got even bigger last year, i created so many scenarios and different types of tripods.. to such extent that there is even a "creator" tripod-- one that is created and controlled telepathically by gods.. with many supernatural abilities and not offensive only.. this whole thing drives me crazy in the best way possible

@@voidboi0 It was better watching it on their own video but it lacks the commentary! boo!! lol It could def use a little adjustment on brightness.
But it was very playable on my settings, i likely have my own settings a little brighter for dark games as i hate not being able to see. I do like the idea that some areas could be very dark and risking the flashlight could be an idea, but if i can just turn my settings up to change it.. kind of negates it. One of the nights before they die i'd make it forced Moonless night, so its very VERY dark besides the walkers and other people, it could make animals very dangerous during that time also, and using light would draw walkers from further away. But yeah walker overhead of a building i figure they'd have the light reflecting inside, i guess until it sat down to let out aliens or to spray/probe.

Tbh, even if Raf fixes all the problems with a tornado, I don't think it should be in the game, a tornado does not work thematically with War of the Worlds, it should be all about the Tripods and that's it. I agree with what that guy in your stream said, he should focus on what needs work first before adding new things but a tornado is a no in my eyes, especially if it yeets the Tripods into the air, that would look too goofy lmao.
Well they are supposed to be an extremely rare event. Who's to say the weather can't do what weather does?

Johan brought up a really good perspective, that core things should take precedence. And I agree. But I also like seeing the creativity. I believe wanted to be a storm chaser growing up. And I would also disagree with you and say that tornado's definitely work thematically, considering the storms the aliens come down in and what looks to be a central US state used for the map. But I do agree with you on the point of it being disruptive, if it were not for how rare the event should occur. Also, Raf has already confirmed how it would effect tripods in the video.
