So I just stopped earning, because what was the point in working this job that I hated if all I was doing was trading my time for money and I didn't even know what to spend the money on. So I just retired early. And I found that the thing I really enjoyed doing was... nothing!

My brother family is like that. They are super saver. they would never spend 5 minutes helping another person including family. While I still continue to save $50 into RRSP and $20 in pension each pay, everything after my bills is quality of life. I feel wealthy because I could afford anything I could realistically want and everyone around me it seems is always squeezing every penny. I feel somewhat privileged to be in this position but after X years of the sacrifice at this point...there's no guilt in indulging. We're all going to die.

Then it was computer graphics cards late last year,, it felt great buying expensive things to satisfy that itch and I made a couple hundred bucks reselling them. • Money management is pretty easy (but a lot of people screw that up anyways) Life management on the other hand, most people are gonna need to sort that out for themselves. It takes a good deal of reflection and thinking to really figure out what you want out of life and how much you want to put into it to get it. It's the little things in life that you do every day that's ultimately the most important, but it's also something a lot of people ignore. Most people sleep every day of their lives, but some have miserable sleep; they don't invest in getting that good night's rest. You'd think something that you spend a third of your life doing you'd pay a lot of attention to, but most people completely ignore it.

    • The most important in life is probably deciding whether you like to set a framework/paradigm shift or just live life as it is and enjoy every bump along the way.. people so fixated on life earning money and when die money can help their child but they forget themselves.. you helping others is also self needs to feel good

If the inflation is actually 15% like some other sources are saying, then people investing have gone back two years on average (assuming 7% yearly growth). • This is the 2nd time Ive been challenged w/ this philosophy & almost rolled my eyes the moment I read it but I remembered that the first time I heard it was from you & also remember that you always have a funny deep intellectual spin on things & sure enough this video blew my mind! AMAZING points made that few people stop to consider & great examples BTW. I guess the best way to sum it up is that one should strive to find a balance between making good investments to build & sustain money while also seeking good investments to spend & enjoy life while life can be enjoyed. For example, being rich during World War 3 will not be fun for anyone & even if everybody else is poor unlike us, they will only turn on us, the rich, seeking to target us as their source for future provision. To some degree we are all in this mortal ship together & should it sink, we all go down. Better to enjoy the food & manage the savings on the ship than to horde it even from oneself only for the ship to sink w/ nobody on board able to enjoy it as treasure hunters who sunk the ship later collect it from our skeletal remains thankful that we foolishly collected & "saved it all for them".

  • As someone who has found some sense of financial freedom, I somewhat agree. This is why I am not interested in financial assets that fail to produce or have the potential to produce positive cash flow because without cash flow, someone can become asset rich and cash poor, which is a major inconvenience for daily life. As for encouraging more lax spending habits, I think this is something that should be earned as a consequence of some financial security because it is an absolute fact that most people are typically awful at allocating their financial resources and this is why saving or investing never becomes a problem for them, like it has for you.

  • Maybe you should convince some Japanese guy to make a video game or anime about being a blacksmith in a fantasy setting and some of the perks that go with it. I imagine that a lack of blacksmiths would be really bad for a town because of farming, adventuring, and war-waging reasons, so the blacksmith is probably loved by his community, at least. His job is also vital to any local iron-manufacturing in the area. As he ages, he can teach new people how to blacksmith, and he and his students can admire the handiwork of his stuff all over town. He is probably one of the tougher guys in the local militia and he at least knows his way around a sword because he probably made his own. He probably eats enough food and his job is physically demanding enough for him to fight reasonably well in a defensive unit. The adventurer, on the other hand, gets drunk everytime he comes across an inn and his party buys up all the rooms, he probably buys up all of the produce and good supplies and then takes the stuff out of town and creates actual scarcity, he probably sleeps with all of the wenches and creates a bunch of unfortunate, misguided bastards, and he may or may not create problems wherever he goes and he may or may not be a good person. He might also save everyone sometimes. He probably eats well sometimes, but also is in more positions where he could end up starving and being hunted for by goblins or Florida men or whatever... Maybe me leaving this comment is more of a "peasant" thing to do. MAybe you making videos is more of a "m'lord" thing to do. I actually think this. You are a cut above the rest in some ways and if you were to be part of the council of my fantasy village and I was the peasant with a pitchfork and a slack-jaw, things would probably be better off than the reverse. Consider also, though, that your life is inevitably more stressful. Your video might be something that you watch later and enjoy more... or it might be some source of stress. By contrast, my comment will be something that I forget about in about 20 minutes, but I can also even see the perks of it. At least I am getting practice with typing and since I have a standing desk, my legs get better at holding me up, and I am enjoying myself. But again... you'll enjoy your thing over and over again. It's a better investment of your time in total, but mine is quicker, easier, and a more quantity over quality way to communicate. I think the world needs both adventurer types and blacksmith types, so I guess we agree. I forget what I was trying to say now. I've been drinking.

    @LisaCulton@LisaCulton2 жыл бұрын
    • isnt it interesting how scarcity mindset goes hand in hand with both fiancial status and job prospects. for example, you dont make enough money so you save everything you can but you are afraid of applying to better jobs in/out of your field because you dont think anyone will hire you so you dont even try. now you talk yourself into being content with the job you have (even though you are not) and start viewing money as solely as a tool for survival and not a multipurpose tool that can be used to enjoy things. its a vicious cycle.

  • This was a nice video. Well done. I always say you have only one live and a somewhat set amount of time, so you have to use that time, it's way more important than any savings in the world. I remember when I was 20 years old and bought an airline ticket to fly to New York and my friend said, "I will do that when I am retired". I said "What? You do not even know if you are still alive at that time, so why wait and save?"... 10 years later I actually invited him to New York and we were on a road trip from New York to Chicago. What a great time. However, that was the only time he left his home country whereas I traveled, lived and worked in many places around the world, learning different cultures and enjoying live.

    • He isn't against that. His point is if you are saving money without any purpose. If you are saving to buy a house, then you are doing what he says is right. If you are just saving money because you want a larger bank account, then it is a waste. The purpose of having money is to have a plan to do something with it to reward your efforts of earning it, otherwise you are just essentially putting in work for nothing.

  • Well, you said many truths....Indeed having a lot of money and never using it is no different as not having it.... ....HOWEVER, having it, even if it's bits and bytes, will give you priceless peace of mind of knowing you don't need to worry about money. So for example, unexpected (is there any other type?) car repair or even car replacement, replacing a broken computer or electronic equipment or water heater or furnace/AC, buying stuff one needs, buying stuff one is just curious about (something unusual at Costco), being able to buy whatever you want or need at the store (say groceries and toys) without worrying is really comforting and takes away a lot of stress from daily life. Having enough money to not have to worry about insurance (of any type), taxes, expenses, food, utilities, gas, rent/mortgage, school/tuition, and daily life is a huge blessing and should never be taken for granted. So having money saved up, especially if it is substantial, keeps certain (not all) stresses away. This will in turn allow you to do what you like/enjoy or at the very least, not do what you hate or makes you unhappy. Money gives you options. If you don't have money, you have no options. So save more so you have more options.

  • This is the way I look at having children. I don't want to debit my life to creating a great life for someone else. I want to be free to enjoy my life to the fullest. There is a such a great sacrifice to having kids that most parents find they are actually not willing to make, and so the kids end up being short changed. I could not Short change my child so i opt not to have one. Yes I know children can also bring joy, but I don't think the joy outweighs the pain of the sacrifice.

  • That's a good insight. As someone with 8 digits of net-worth, I will give you one more: Model your life as a utliity function. Living life gives you utility, working disutility. Put things in perspective. Find work where disutility is not so negative, maybe neutral or even positive. Maximize your positive utility, ideally by positive utility that doesn't bring negative utility with you (like costing a lot of money, or needing a lot of time). Example: I am looking for a place to go surfing. The travel price to get there via airplane is nearly the same everywhere I go, so I ignore the cost of the airplane and only factor in the flight time / required stopovers (which gives me disutility). Then I look for which place has nice girls (maximize utility), an ambience I like (I like having a variety of restaurants to choose from, so no bumfuck surf villages).

    • I'm not quite there but definitely one benefit I've enjoyed making more in my 30s now than 20s is flights. Before I did discount airlines and layovers to save like $100 or $200. Not anymore. No more red eyes, no more frontier (always delta if possible) and direct flights if available. Now I can afford it and its worth the extra $200 to fly direct on delta at noon vs flying southwest with 2 hours layover at bad time
