Thanks to Richard for lending us these Teslas - / @rsev
Tesla fanboys, are you ready?! We’ve pulled together the three Model 3 variants available today to see just how they perform against each other!
Now of course, when you look at the stats, you’re going to assume the Performance will walk everything. Given it’s packing dual electric motors, it can put down 457hp and 660Nm! Coming up in second we have the Model 3 Long Range, which also comes with dual electric motors to produce 367hp and 510Nm.
And then finally we have the Standard Range Plus, which only has a single electric motor, along with the ability to put down 296hp and 450Nm.
So the drag may be a foregone conclusion, but how about the other challenges? After all, there’s only £16,000 between the Standard and the Performance, so will the Long Range or Standard Plus be able to reel in the Performance?
There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!

if you’re in the market for one, get the long range, not the standard
Dyno testing shows that above 80mph (I don't remember exact speed), the Performance and AWD produces the same HP and torque. The Performance is definitely producing more power at lower speeds. The Performance and AWD shares the same motor, but the performance is a better binned motor. The AWD is software locked to lower power. The reason the 2021 Performance lost to the 2020 Long Range at higher speeds in this video is because for the 2021 Model 3 refresh, Tesla changed the battery temperature profile for increased efficiency to reduce heating the battery. However, that means the 2021 Model 3's generally have lower battery temperatures while driving, which significantly reduces performance in cold weather and lower battery levels. The 2018-2020 Model 3s do not have this issue. You can see more about this in the video below. This is a big issue that I hope Tesla fix with an OTA update. kzhead.info/sun/edWAgpqQbImcm5s/bejne.html

Mat PLEASE get a model 3 long range with the acceleration boost vs the performance, it would be very interesting to watch and probably a close race.
That car doesn’t exist. The acceleration boost comes on the perf model lol.. the only other way to get it is in the model S or higher there is a model that you can get that. In the model 3 you have to get performance model to get that

I'm pretty sure the long range in the video already had the performance option, because it had the red line under the long range badge, something only performance models get.
@@alfrredd that was just an editing gaff
@@alfrredd I was wondering about the same. If the red Line underneath the Dual Motor lettering was on the LR. It seems to be a base performance Model 3. usually they are quicker than the „normal“ Performance Cars because of the lighter Wheels and better Aerodynamics🤷♂️ Anyhow, Matt shows the settings on hin dual motor, and it does not show the Sport option . Only Chill and Standard. Which leads to a non boosted LR :)
So if i upgrade my Tesla long range with performance upgrade, my dual motor underline will change from chrome to red? 😉

Agreed
Yes. Test again with the longe range acceleration boost to see how close it is to the performance.
there are other channels that have done that already. Its not far off what the performance is but performance is still faster.
I'm guessing one difference may be the size/weight of the tires, perhaps at high speeds that's a slight drag on acceleration. The main benefit of Performance trim is track mode, which lets you adjust the traction for whatever event you're planning to participate in, it also lets the battery cooling operate at a higher level, to help the vehicle maintain that level of performance for extended periods of time. kzhead.info/sun/jZh_kpqMpnOdaaM/bejne.html And perhaps on the track it theoretically could make sense to optimize for stronger acceleration below 70mph, in order to dart out of those twists and turns and make up time on the deceleration around corners and such. No idea if this actually a factor though.
They forgot to mention that his car already had the long range acceleration boost
@@tiago.lajas.00 no it didn't. The steering mode only had chill and standard
From 0 there are a lot of videos, but none that shows the difference between P and AWD w. Acceleration boost at rolling starts at the different speeds. This I would love to see.
Awesome! Please do one with the performance upgrade vs no upgrade vs performance! I thought the main difference between the performance and long range dual motor was just software slowing you down. Bet the upgrade puts it level with the performance.

The “long range” car in this video is actually the stealth performance.
@@LazyTom10 Exactly. Most don't know Tesla allowed you to buy a P3 with Long Range wheel and brake package. The underlined dual motor badge gives it away. The difference in speed, is really a 1st gen performance vs the 2021 M3 refresh with a bigger battery.
@@LazyTom10 No its's not. You can see from the screen that acceleration is in standard not sport (only bosted long range and performance has sport mode). Also there is no red stripe under the dual motor badge.

7:22 *The driver in the Standard Plus* *LMAO* 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Not the first time he does this 😂
He was going absolutely ape!
On the breaking performance I think or you would see the difference between the performance model and the long range would be on the track situation where you're continually building up heat. Also there's a track mode I believe in the settings that allow you to hang the ass out a little bit more. Also think there's some difference in the cooling system programming that it will go to maximum cooling when it's set in track mode to help keep the battery better managed
Mat, for EV drag races it’ll be useful if your team included current state of charge (SOC) numbers with the HP and weight stats 👍🏾

Hahah, didn't see that one for the first time xD
3:52 Just gotta love how the front end just lifts up n takes off!
Yes! I would love to see this same test with the boost option added to the LR Dual Motor! This was super interesting!
It's been done. The P with big wheels, and the boosted LR with 18" aeros are dead even from a roll, but the P is still quicker from 0-40.
I can’t believe how fascinating these outcomes were wow. Would not have expected the top end speed from the long range. Would love to see the acceleration boost upgrade video!
Elle est déjà en boost...
Different (newer and slower) battery in the performance
It has smaller wheels I believe which is the likely reason
Performance brakes don't necessarily brake "harder" but mostly can keep braking hard for longer.
Yep and the tyres are the limiting factor. Larger brakes won't make a difference.
Well for any sort of performance/track driving the brakes are pretty bad. The performance model 3 overheats its brakes like halfway through a lap of the Nurburgring nordschleife. It still brakes but the brake fade is quite severe.
@@I_No-one_I What im wondering about is why dont Tesla`s use way more force with the regen braking when in track mode... Would spare the brakes alot.
They’re Brembo brakes on all Model 3s. What is giving up early is the pad choice. Remember that on the street, you rarely use the brakes as you have regen that slows you. If you track it, a pad switch is straightforward.
@@TheGamingNorwegian well some people turn off the regen when on track because it overheats the battery faster. You will have less range but the performance won’t be reduced as much because of the cooler battery.
Adding an LR with Acceleration Boost to the mix would be great to see - LR vs. LRAB vs. Perf. Would definitely help me decide whether to get Acceleration Boost on my LR.
It would literally sit in between the two off the line, and then above 50mph the same as the LR. Only the newer performance has the newer Panasonic 82kwh battery which seems to be lacking in output at higher speeds, at least on v cold days like this was!
@@RSEV which software version was the Performance running? Could it be some sort of software battery protection in cold weather situations? Or perhaps the new heat pump plays a role here?
@@base924 I do not recall what it was at the time, it was end of Jan. I think it’s a just the newer 82kwh pack behaves differently to the 75kwh packs in the Lr (and pre-refresh performance).

@@RSEV So the 75kWh performance is quicker at high speed rolling starts?

Yes please, make the comparison with the performance upgrade. It is called Acceleration Boost and is available for the M3 LR AWD. Would be interesting to see a drag race between M3 LR AWD with Acceleration Boost vs. M3 Performance.
AWD + acceleration boost upgrade is almost like a performance
Not when you drive on Autobahn, trust me! 261 km/h vs 233 km/h
@@stjerneskruetraekker Sure, the software gives the P an eventual higher top speed (which can't really be used anywhere outside an autobahn) but going by this video, my LR with boost is going to be hanging onto to the back of a P from the start - and then bizarrely, overtaking it.
@@stjerneskruetraekker For top speed, electric cars aren't the way to go. I wonder how far you could drive at 261 before having to stop because of overheating? I bet the answer is about 10 minutes.

I actually think the one in this video has the Accel Boost, but @carwow just didn't know it. 1/4 mile times are indicative of such since they are exactly a half second apart. It also looks the part as I've seen the race between those two before on other channels such as Dragtimes and the separation distance at launch looks nearly the same.
@@taipoxin nope... I'm sure it hasn't. If it had the drive option would also say sport in stead of standard.
@@taipoxin go to 2:46....I have the acceleration pack and then it says sport just like the performance. 👌
@@midrenthje Good eye. You're right then it's not Boosted. In which case I can't explain how it was only a 0.5s difference in this comparison because it should be a full second difference based on past data in the last year. Unless the newer 2021 LR models have more power due to the larger battery packs and thus the gap is even less. Makes me wonder what the 2021 LR w/ AB runs in the 1/4 mile.
@@taipoxin I won't believe it until they show all the soc's in a continuous cut. And I say that as a proud dual motor with acceleration boost owner. I don't think the different battery plays a part in this.
Absolute love my SR+, rwd drive en lighter then the longrange. Fast enough and a joy to drive. Planning on buying some lightweight 18 inch wheels and a 25mm lowering.
Watching this as you make it so fun to watch, thanks!
Hi all, I’ll add my comments here... 1) The speed difference at higher end seems to be down to this new bigger pack in the newer performance. It just lacks output at higher speeds, at least in these colder conditions. Maybe on warmer days it’s different, but from my own tests so far it’s consistently slightly slower than LR 75kwh cars above 50mph. 2) a Long Range with “acceleration boost” (a £1500 option which can be unlocked from owners app) would sit right in between the performance and the Lr off the line. Above 50mph it would be the same as the Long Range. 3) for new performance v old performance, stay tuned to this channel. 4) braking... I’m 95kg in weight thanks Mat 😂🤔. The newer performance has Pirelli’s and I’m not a fan of them in cold weather. They’re also narrower than the Michelin’s that used to be on performance (2cm less on the road per tyre).
2 years late but on both acceleration and braking the LR will have an advantage due to smaller wheels which are lighter, not much mass difference but rotational mass is more important especially when changing speed
Feeling pretty great about picking up a Long Range today for myself & my channel!! Thanks for the video. Now I definitely am glad I didn’t waste money on the “Performance” version.
Really an unexpected result. Thanks for doing this test. Have a tm3lr myself, because of its towing capacity. No need to have second thoughts about that I guess.
Absolutely would love to see what happens with ‘performance boost feature’ enabled on Long Range version vs the Actual Performance version
I can tell you, I measured it on my channel. With boost the LR is faster at lower speed and manages a 11.8s quarter mile time. At higher speeds the boost doesnt add anything though, so the results would be pretty much the same. Except the M3P would be even faster now, as this video was done with an old software where power got cut at lower temperatures.
The larger UberHeavy wheels 🛞on the Model 3 Performance really hold it back at higher speeds. They made a version of the Performance Model 3 that had the smaller lighter wheels and the regular brakes. Those “Stealth” Performance model 3s are some of the fastest Model 3s ever made.
Just put 18s on my M3P for the sake of fewer bent wheels/blown tires and being a bit faster.
Great content, please do the video with the Performance Upgrade on the Long Range Tesla Model 3. Looking forward to :)

It would be great to see this test again now that the software issue with the M3P has been fixed. If you look through the comments, there is a link to a video and data showing exactly what the issue was and how much it was affecting the M3P.
If that is a 2021 performance, Bjorn Nyland found it suffered heavily from the new heat pump setup in cooler temperatures. The heat pumps pulls the heat from the battery resulting in poor power output, making it slower than the LR in some conditions. That could be the reason the 2020 LR caught up with it as the day went on, the P could have been suffering from a cold battery.
This is the right answer. With that the 2021 performance will do more than 1 lap on the Nordschleife and you can keep the battery cool which is way more important for a Performance car
Thats only a consideration in cold weather. I think they simply charged the Long Range after the Performance, so the battery was warmer, resulting in higher peak power. They should have set the same SoC and the same temperature with ScanMyTesla, but thats a lot to expect from a non EV media producer
@@EmptyRoad remember this was filmed late winter in the UK, whilst sunny it could still have been quite cold.

The long range seems to be alot better than the standard range plus and alot better range but just barely not as good as the performance but still impressive but also has a little better range than the performance. The acceleration settings from the screen are « chill »/« standard » which should indicate it is a long range model though…
As you drive at higher speeds, the charge level of the cars makes a difference in how much torque you get at the higher speed. That could be why long range was beating the performance. I know this from a dyno test graph I saw at various charge levels.
Depends if the Performance was throwing dots on the charge meter. If the Performance had Dots appear due to battery heat / no cool down period then the software was limiting power - like a limp mode.
Interesting, I would like to see all cars on the same size wheels, my guess is that the oversize wheels of the Performance model are a factor
Hey guys, check the footage from any cameras you had in the performance pointed at the screen for battery levels. Power output is reduced depending on battery level (though differences are marginal above 70%). Could explain the LR pulling ahead of the performance.
I also really want to know this. The way the Performance gets hobbled on battery is criminal. Bjorn showed previous years didn’t do this.
Idk, bad car bad company

Sorry mate i dont fcking care about that wanna be mustang
Don't care ant mach e
The reaction times on that first arm drop were staggering! lol 😆
This helped me decide to buy the long range. Thank you!!
Yes I would love to see the upgrade diffrence on the LR!
Other channels have done it and the performance is still faster than the LR with the boost
Please do this same test but with acceleration boost for the long range.
The exhaust note on the performance one is beautiful.
I'd love to the the LRAWD with acceleration boost thrown in there too. Maybe even throw a model y performance in as well for kicks
Yes please do a performance upgrade on the long range against the performance
Do one between LR with acceleration boost (extra 1.5k upgrade) and performance.
yes, please test the LR acceleration boost as well.
YES! Please do the comparison with the speed boost upgrade on the LR AWD model 3! Maybe it will compete with the performance!
7:22 😂😂😂 “come! On! Lets! Go!”
i looked in comment to see who seen it lol
Do performance Upgrade on the long range!!
Very interesting ! Keep up the good work !
Absolutely you should do the test after you buy the accelration boost for the long range!
Yes please, Acceleration Boost! Just bought the 2021 LR and would love to know how it does with the boost :)
Same here, it's blisteringly fast as it is but I'm still gonna boost mine!
It’s a nice, had it and prob will be super close
You can try it for Yourself, and get a refund if You're not happy...
The long range that he is driving is a performance version. Look at the badge. It might be a Stealth Performance a model 3.
Good point! I do see the line under the Dual Motor on his l/r. Interesting...
Long Range with Performance boost, would love to see it
I’m wondering if it did have the acceleration boost. Did he say it something about that in the video?
@@peterd1431 watch from 8.19
The LR has a “performance” badge on it. I’m not convinced it didn’t have it already.
@@godsfavoritecustomer That was an editing mistake, and the performance upgrade is a software unlock and doesn't get you a new badge
@@colinnich It's also not 1:1 Performance w/ the update, as the Model 3 Performance has a beefier inverter for better acceleration from 0mph. Acceleration Boost doesn't really kick in until about 30mph or so.
Those aero wheels help long range a lot, used to be a option to get performance with them. Helps a lot not having massive 20 inch rims
Would be a cool idea to do a similar test with other cars and specs.
The Long Range AWD is really just a software-locked performance model. There are third party modules out there that will take an older Long Range AWD and turn it into a Performance model. I'd assume the reason why the Performance model lost is because after many repeated runs at full performance, the battery was getting hot. Whereas the Long Range at locked-performance wasn't being fully utilized, so the battery was cooler.
That was only the case with the very first LR models. The current ones have a different rear drive unit.
The batteries are slightly different. But yea it probably got hot or the battery was low.
@@SwoopWoW Tesla claim they are double binned... most likely bullshit.
@@dz6472 no.
Nope, motors are the same, once you go past max amps from the battery they fall off the same, so speed is down to wheels being heavier on the P. That is why each time they increased the speed, the difference between them all became smaller.
7:22 you see the guy in Standard plus pushing himself 😂
😂😂
Nah he’s got an installed flesh light bellow the dash. He was smashing it. 😎
Great videos, thanks for sharing. Which suction cup pad mounts are you using?
My uncle has a Long Range just like the one in this video and I absolutely adore it. The car that made me see the light in EVs. Very surprising outcome.
Would there be a difference in the outcome if the Performance was in track mode? My guess is the larger brakes and heavier wheel package are severely hurting the higher speed performance.
You are exactly right about that. The moment of inertia of the larger brakes and wheels takes away from acceleration. It is also costly for range. On the long range model, the standard 18” (same as on Matt’s car here) gets 25 miles more range than the 19” upgrade. Yes it’s not the most elegant wheel especially since it has a hubcap but it’s cheaper, more economical and faster. That’s why I’ve always said it’s silly for people that buy sports cars to put ridiculously large rims on them. You’re just robbing performance. You’re also reducing the internal air volume which makes the ride harsher.
Haha just as matt said lets do the sound test an acura commercial with actual sound started playing 😂

I have the 2020 Model 3 Long Range, loving it.
@Mat, instead of standard settings, next time, can you set them in their sportiest setting, and then re-run the tests?
