It’s time for a Supra showdown!
We’ve got two modern Supras, the 3-litre and the 2-litre, going up against the Mk4!
It’s no surprise that the most powerful car lining up is the 3-litre Mk5. With a 3-litre straight-six under the bonnet, it can produce 340hp and 500Nm of torque. In comparison, the 2-litre can only put down 258hp and 400Nm!
So we’re not holding out much hope for the 2-litre! But how about the Mk4? Well it’s also packing a 3-litre straight-six 2JZ, but it's still slightly down on power compared to the Mk5, producing 320hp & 441Nm.
But wait! That doesn't necessarily mean it'll just be a clean sweep for the Mk5. We all know by now that the Mk5 Supra is hiding a BMW engine under the bonnet. The question is, does that mean they’ve also brought over BMW’s temperamental launch system?!

For an archaic four speed auto, the 2JZ did pretty well for itself. Could make out that unmistakable 2JZ noise at various points. Turns out even an automatic Mk IV Supra is still a Mk IV Supra.

For Launch control to work you have to press the pedal to the bottom hit the acceleration once, release and then floor it and it will enter laucnh dont know why but it is working like that! :D

2.0 supra is not too shabby off the line, it's smaller displacement does start to take it's toll on the rolling races though. Not bad overall for the cheapest option supra. 😊

I know it was humorous but Ive still got to do an "akchually" as that is not the case given that it is on the TNGA-B with a TNGA-C rear end mated to it.
Even if toyota made the new supra... they know they cant win against the old one too much nostalgia factor from fans... If its 600hp from factory than its too expensive...if its not 25000$ msrp it looks too cheap from inside. If its 4wd the original was 2wd... if its 2 wd they will say it cant put the power down... and we didnt even get to tuning part of it. Its just easier to point towards bmw. And take credit if people like it. Or blame bmw if they dont.

That MKIV is simply beautiful! Something about the mid 90's Japanese sports cars. Clean, simple lines. Aged well, and honestly, if I could, I'd take a stock MKIV any day over any modern car. Don't care about the performance really. I just think it will age better than most new cars and the interior dashboard has always been one of my favorites.
Yes you would prefer a car that looks like a catfish thats 30 years old that can possibly have many problems because of age over a modern car with a warranty and costing less
@@anti4107 I clearly stated "If I could". You don't buy a 90's sports car as you daily driver or daily commuter, in my opinion. So, yeah, IF I COULD, I would get a MKIV Supra over a modern car, because I wouldn't NEED it.
@@anti4107 hate to break it to you but the fact the the modern supras have a bmw drive train pretty much guaranty's issues that will be costly to fix outside of warranty and bad reliability, that 3.0 liter straight six doesn't have nearly as many things that can go wrong with it an will be a lot cheaper to fix in most cases. as far as looks its depends on the person I like the MKIV's look more but I don't hate the MKV either. I wish Toyota had not partnered with BMW for this car. One of the reasons the MKIV was so popular was the engine was really over built and took a lot more power while being somewhat reliable.

Considering 1) you just can't get an Mk4 in mint condition without going into permanent debt, and 2) the 3.0 is 10 GRAND more expensive than the 2.0 - I'd have to go with the 2.0 for any use except strict track days. It kept up with both cars admirably and is priced to near-affordable levels for a 13 second 1/4 car.
Late update for watchers of this video, but Papadakis Racing did a video series on building the MkV into the new Formula Drift car for their team, and with simple rod-and-piston upgrades the BMW engine has been reliably putting down over 1000HP on every run. Papadakis did a video on the engine teardown itself on his channel
Let's remember we're talking about a car thats built in the mid 90s. And to still be able to hang with very recent modern cars is a testament to Toyota engineers back in the day.
Actually, it wasn’t all Toyota....Yamaha, Asin and yes BMW took also part at Engineering the old Supra....that’s why Toyota ask BMW for cooperation with the new Supra, because BMW also took part at engineering the old Supra, as the only no Japanese company....many people forget that

with the amount of research ive done on the 2.0L 2020 Toyota Supra, honestly, I'm sold. Id much rather spend the money on the 2.0L and make slight modifications under the 6k cost space between the 2.0L and 3.0L.
You won't regret it. It is cheaper to buy and to own, way more agile with better handling and braking due to much lower weight, and it is faster from stop until you reach non-public roads speeds/conditions. Unless you track it or you are obssessed with better engine sound, there is no point in getting the 3L.
Can we just take a moment and appreciate the older Supra for giving a tough fight even after being 20 years old!!

Haha stock 2JZ GTE makes 320hp when turbos are replaced it goes up to 800hp according to the turbo you choose. After 800hp internsls for the 2JZ needs to be Changed.

Had a red '95 manual Turbo with the sportroof. That thing was my best friend for years. My first M5 was frankly quicker, better built, more versatile, and probably equally good looking. I had snow tires for the Supra so it was my summer and winter car while I drove the BMW more spring and autumn. I rue selling both. I didn't care for the R35 I got later and really liked but didn't love the F430 manual spider I got later. I don't think it's possible to be happier than I was with my cars in 2000.
I love the Spura MK4 because it is Actually fast I think if it had more area to drive it would even beat the the Mk5 3.0 car
The old automatic Supra wasn't half bad in this part, still having enough guts to face its more modern equivalent.

320hp what was the psi the Mk4 was running on to make that? I read they are below their max psi and that you can up the Psi with a boost controller around 16-17 which 18 will be pushing it on stock twins
I’ve driven the new 3.0 litre manual but really want to drive the 2.0 litre manual….but they don’t make one! The 2 litre is more nimble and more fun to drive than the 3 litre.

Not really if you look at the #'s and simply don't trust the BS test. The MKIV is MUCH slower (several car lengths through various distances and traps), handles much worse and gets much worse MPG. So no, not close. 2021 Supra: 60 mph: 3.8 sec 100 mph: 8.8 sec 130 mph: 15.2 sec 150 mph: 21.9 sec 1993 Supra Turbo: 60 mph: 4.6 sec 100 mph: 11.1 sec 130 mph: 19.9 sec 150 mph: 29.6 sec

@@bait-cz5uj remove that restrictive exhaust and the 2 cats, throw in a 3.5 inch or 4 inch full exhaust and watch the sound and performance wake up :-) On my 98, after doing the basic bolt ons, 3 inch intake, 3 inch intercooler piping, remove that gay ass mechanical fan, and the full 3.5 inch exhaust (no cats), i swear i gained an easy 50 hp ...

A 25 year old sports car is going to be faster than a modern day daily driver. It's not as simple as "It's old, it must be good to be faster than new car". The MK5 isn't exactly revolutionary, and a stock MK4 is pretty ass.

@@garage5125 1) Yes you can 2) Can YOU get the MK4 to 1000hp? You make it sound like it doesn't cost a SHIT ton of money to get the MK4 to 1000hp, and even after you get your precious MK4 to 1000hp, it can only ever go in a straight line, car handles like ass.
@@KingBarney 1) yes you can but not for long. it HAS some reason why those engines are popular by tuners...2)i know how to, though i ve never done it, i am not gonna lie. but i know than you don´t have to swap out half of the engine internals as you would do in many other engines. Handling is not that bad really, unless you can´t drive, and if you cannot drive MK4 supra due to the chassis handling, you are not supposed to drive any vehicle that has more than like 60 horsepower. it is a rear wheel drive car so it tends to skid, but it is however predictable. if you ever driven a GAZ 24 volga V8, you will have the mk4 supra as a relaxing car with brilliant handling... And last but not least. tell me what engine of this displacement can take 1000 brake horsepower and lasting as long or longer than 2JZ can....
@@garage5125 you are wrong, the bmw engine is a looooooooooot better than the 2jz stock to stock, and you can get 1000hp from the bmw engine someone done it already, and even those 1000hp on the bmw engine will be enough for 2000hp on the 2jz, hp numbers aint everything

It’s pretty amazing how well the Mk4 holds up. I imagine one with a manual transmission would have fared even better.
It would do better if it had 320hp. The version in video is a JDM model which has 280hp. They provided data for euro spec model. A small mistake by carwow
@@DziadekMroz6666 you do know even the jdm one has 320hp. But in Japan it is just advertised as 280 because of the gentlemen’s agreement . Same story with the skylines and Mitsubishi gto.
@@coldinfusion no, they don't. They have different turbos, injectors than Euro models. I'm deeep af in this topic. They Dyno at ~300. Btw Mk5 supra dyno at 385 hp instead of advertised 340

? What I would like to see is these 3 cars compared on a circuit. Your driving the 2.0 liter Fuji speedway edition with the standard sportspack of the 3.0 liter extra ! Bigger brakes, lim. slip dif, indep. wheel suspension ... You can steer sharper, have a lighter nose, you can go later in the brakes ... Can the 2.0 liter be the real king then ?
I love the shell of the new Supra, not the engine though. If I was to ever buy the 3.0 it’ll be manual swapped. But overall I’d go for the 2.0 then swap a built 2j in it with a big single turbo and anti-lag. Maybe a Bee-R as well.

@@stevenmorales9063 Mmmhhyeahhh no idk, that's a 20 almost 30 year old auto trans compared to a new auto trans so maybe a manual would've been closer to the Mk5's auto trans in terms of shift speed and for sure would've been faster than the Mk4's auto, but still miles off the Mk5's.
I'd take the old one. We don't see many "stock" ones here in CA!
