It’s crazy how the 1911 that is still in use today was invented only 40 odd years after the colt single action army.
Both guns are. Colt makes memorable firearms.
The 1911 was designed with the popularity of the SAA in mind, so it took some design cues. .45ACP and the barrel length were designed to give similar ballistics to .44-40 or .45LC. It was single action with the hammer exposed and had a half cock. Also like the SAA, the 1911 was initially offered in both .38 and .45 variants.
The thumbs down is someone who doesn't like the history of one of the most famous revolvers in the world. Sad, really.
Probably some counter culter reject from communist California.✌🤪🤓peace, drugs, nerds................

There is Great Deal of romantic nonsense talked about the West, Personal I think the Myth of the west is more important to Americans than the Reality of it,
@@leebennett4117 Well, that is true. The western movie and tv era romanticized if and is very much a part of why we love it so.
No the thumbs down are from the schofield fans!
Well, those settlers and farmers couldn't have tamed the Wild West without one gun in particular; the double barrel shotgun. A large family of settlers likely didn't have a Colt Single Action Army revolver. Nor a Winchester repeater. But practically all of them had a double barrel shotgun. Simple to use, reliable, and affordable. BTW, real nice-looking Colt, Santee. Hope you were able to buff out those scratches.
True. But they did it with shotguns, pistols, rifles....and tenacity. That's why we have a successful western U.S....because of people!
Loved the part at the end I feel that’s how most collectors feel about their guns. Good history lesson
Yeah, I wasn't really that concerned, but I do treat it differently than my clones.

@@nathanthomas8251 Holy moly this comment was from a year ago
Santee can you do history videos of companies like smith and wesson and Winchester Edit: thank you for all the likes
Absolutely!
I never understood why so few militaries adopted them .Especially since some of them had no issue with having a Single Action revolver .
Well, the firearm was used in at least 8 wars...so I'd say it got around.
But only by the United States .Strange .
Handguns were normally only carried by officers in most armies, and the purpose was not to fight with it. It was more of a status symbol and a means to motivate soldiers.
So in the old west the reporters stretched the truth for those in the East. And today we have Hollywood. Good thing there are people like you around to show the truth! 👍
We are still learning things. Every video teaches us stuff, too.
There better have been a pillow on that floor

“Skin that smoke wagon and see what happens.” When I saw Tombstone, I’d use that more than “I’m your huckleberry”.
Wow. Beautiful revolver! And the video was excellent! If all you know about the Old West is what you see in movies.... videos like this are just what we need.
Thanks!
I really feel like this video needed to come with a disclaimer that no Colt revolvers were harmed in the making of this video. I always find amusing the difference between Hollywood and reality when it comes to operation of guns in the old west. Fanning would be bad because it seems to me that someone wouldn't want to abuse something that cost them more than a half a month's salary.
I have a 3 screw Ruger Blackhawk 357. Once I tried "fanning" with it and it about ripped the skin off my hand. Better to use gloves next time!
HA! I will put a disclaimer in the description field below the video saying just that. There were folks that fanned their guns. I'm sure the gunsmiths in their towns liked them a lot.
Fanning was mostly something the trick shooters and exhibitionists did. Not only was it harmful to the weapon but it was also a great way to miss a lot and waste ammo that should've gone into the other man instead. I doubt many cowboys actually did it except for fun.
Beautiful gun ya got there. Nothing feels better than a Colt SA in the hand. It may have been "meat & potatoes", not as mechanically fancy as others, but it was simple & dependable.
Yup!
Honestly I love how this gun has so many names. My favorites are Equalizer, Widow maker, and Peacemaker.
Those are good ones
@@ArizonaGhostriders yeah...but my number one favorite is Equalizer...because everyone is equal when they die.
@@lostonessoul5154 I think the name equalizer came from the saying "God made man, Samuel Colt made them (Man) Equal."

Revolver Ocelot!
How do I buy one
Those that carried them then and those of us that carry them now do NOT load six cartridges in the SAA or any of its clones! Accidental discharges are common if carried with a live round under the hammer. Load one, skip one chamber, load 4 more, cock the hammer all the way back and ease it back down! There will be an empty chamber under the hammer/firing pin!

looks like Jerry is getting a visit from Rex regarding your priceless guns 🤣
Yes
On the topic of better engineered guns, it's a shame that S&W didn't offer the Schofield in .45 Colt. It was the better handgun, especially for cavalry, with it's top break action. It allowed for faster reloads and, with practice, one handed reloads on horseback. The Colt required two hands for reloading and couldn't eject the spent casings at once, like the Schofield could.
Agreed
If Smith had come out with a .45 during the trial period, they may have won the contract with the Army.
Wasn't there a problem with the Scofield's top break malfunctioning? Any idea how prevalent that was if it did? Also, was there a specific reason why they didn't make a .45 version? I haven't seen the two revolvers in real life, so I'm kinda fuzzy on the relative dimensions. Was the Scofield's cylinder shorter and unsuitable for larger calibers?
@@eldorados_lost_searcher They made the Schofield to use a proprietary cartridge, the .45 Schofield. It was shorter than the .45 Colt. From what I've heard, it was for patent reasons, even though Remington made the 1875 in .45 Colt.
@@RichWhiteUM Thank you! There was also probably a desire to secure an ammunition contract, if that's the case.
Hey santee would you be able to do a video on the Australian old west like during the Ned Kelly era
I'm thinking yes, even though it's not in America (but it's really Old West)

Although there are diehards that won’t admit it, there were double action cowboy guns in the old west. They first started coming out in the 1870s with Smith & Wesson starting in 1880. Many famous and infamous people carried them has a backup gun.
Actually, the Starr Double Action Revolver came out in the 1850-60 period. So those diehards can't fight history!

Should have used Beaky before. He's a hoot.
can you potentially do a dressing the part video on the drifter
Sure
My ex has a 1st Gen SSA .45 Colt Revolver that his grandfather won in a poker game. It was in France during WWI, and he won it as an IOU from a Texas Ranger. His grandfather and the Ranger exchanged addresses, but the Ranger never resurfaced, although his grandfather tried to find him. But this was the 1920s after a war and it wasn't easy to find someone. The gun got passed down in the family until my husband got it. The Ranger's address was lost sometime in the 50s. I was able to get a Certificate of Authenticity from Colt on the gun and gave it to my husband for Christmas one year. We never could find the Ranger. The gun was part of a shipment from Colt that shipped to St. Louis bound for Texas. The paperwork in St Louis that would have had the buyers name on it was lost in a fire. Oh well, it was a beautiful gun and still was in great shape and was very accurate.
You did your best to find the original owner, but you seem to be taking great care of it.
Great video Santee. I too have a fascination for the Colt Single Action Army.
It is a sexy beast!
@@ArizonaGhostriders I also just started watching Wynonna Earp on Netflix. Not a bad show. Have you seen it?
Santee, I was wondering if the weight of the revolver helps to stabilize it when shooting, or does it kick like the proverbial mule? Also, great payoff joke at the end.
The weight helps with the recoil. It also depends on how hot your loads are. The longer barrel helps, too.
Standard loadings for the 45 are lively but they do NOT kick like a mule!!! More like a Shetland pony!!

fun fact the reason it took until 1873 for the peacemaker to come out is because another gun company had the patent for a bored through cylinder on a revolver for use with metallic cartridges so colt kept making ball and cap revolvers until 1869 which is the year the patent expired and then made the 1873 peacemaker while providing services to convert old ball and cap revolvers to metallic cartridge firing revolvers because there were so many of them in use still shortly after the peacemaker started to sell really well
