Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, breaks down the weaponry of Red Dead Redemption 2, including the iconic Colt Single Action revolver, the Winchester 1866 rifle, and the Browning Auto-5 shotgun.
Red Dead Redemption 2 saw Rockstar return to the frontiers of the Wild West for a prequel to the seminal Red Dead Redemption, and as a result, it includes a range of period weaponry from 1899 such as the Smith & Wesson Volcanic Pistol, the Remington Rolling Block Rifle, and the Norwegian 1894 Krag-Jørgensen rifle.
In the above video, Jonathan Ferguson--a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries--breaks down the guns of Red Dead Redemption 2 and compares them to their real-world counterparts..

    • Yea, but the stats let alone someone owning those guns is stupid. The volcanic pistol predates alot of the guns in the game but wasnt popular due to it being underpowered, the cattleman is underpowered in the game also. It should be the most powerful handgun of the game with the scholfeild after it, the navy revolver and lemat shoudlnt be as powerful as there are because they took smaller calibers but also took less powder same as the Schofield. The double action should be one of the weakest, so should the pistols

  • A bit of a shame that The Schofield wasn't covered. Not only is it my favourite of the RDR2 revolvers, it also keeps it's real name for a pretty dark reason. The reason that there's no licensing problem, is because the Schofield who invented it, shot himself with the gun that shared his name.

    • I know this is a 2 year old comment and I'll look it up myself as well, but why would that allow the name to be used without licensing? Did he die before he could patent it? Or some other reason? I'll update this comment with what I find :) Update: I couldn't find much info, but to reiterate and expand on OPs comment a bit, the Schofield Revolver was named after Major George Schofield who modified the Smith and Wesson Model 3 to be easier to reload while on horseback, cutting reload time in half (around 30 seconds to fully reload the Schofield variant). It became popular enough amongst the cavalry that Smith and Wesson patented the modified design, naming it after the Major. Compared to the Colt 45 it had a bit less power and recoil that made it easier to shoot accurately, but still kept it's stopping power. Eventually it was standardized to accept .45 Schofield and .45 Colt rounds interchangeably. Major Scholfield did indeed commit suicide with a Schofield in his full military gear in 1882, 3 years after his wife died and 9 years after the Schofield Revolver was patented. I couldn't find anything about why R* can use some names like the Schofield, Volcanic, and (I believe) the Rolling Block Rifle, but if I had to guess I'd think it comes down to either: the real names they use are public domain or they only paid for the licensing for those specific guns for whatever reason. "Gun lore" is kinda interesting sometimes I suppose

Doing that in context of a game that focused so much on realism in small details, this sucked and contributed to a lot of players quitting the game. It’s not the only reason by any means. And critically, that was an anecdotal story; it’d be incredibly difficult to confirm if that actually happened and if it’s actually true. It may be a true story, or it may have been an exaggeration, or possibly even have been a true story that was just a fluke because he got a bad batch of ammo or something. • The Browning Auto 5 is a bit of a weird one in this game. It was first designed and prototyped in 1898...but it didn't actually enter production until 1902. So technically this gun is both anachronistic AND period accurate at the same time (since the game time-skips from 1899 to 1907).

  • 3:00 your not wrong actually the double action fires faster with hip fire and is less accurate while the single action is slower and way more accurate and slow on the reload in game Also the main use of the varmint rifle is to not ruin the skins and bodies of smaller animals like birds and rabbits cause a bolt action or rolling block would probably ruin a rabbit skin

The Evans repeater, the LeMat revolver, the navy revolver, the Maxim gun, the siege cannon(an opportunity to use the "artillery" part of Jonathan's title, the elephant gun, the M1899 and semi-auto pistols, the Carcano, too. • The only complaint I have with that game really is that, the guns you have always has the same serial number where you can see it. It would be nice to have two or three versions to play with, maybe a clean or dirty one. Just a minor gripe really, more variety in weapons, or even different conditions of the same weapons would be nice. besides not having the tech to play the game without lagging too much thus dying all the time. I have a question tho for veterans, with or without sleeves?
