Update: I was incorrect about what the feeler gauge was used for. The person who told me this asked that I keep it private though so I'm going to respect that. Just know that the idea hypothesized in the video is incorrect.

  • The trade secret is hammer shims. So when you take your hammer screw out the shims will fall out into the abyss. Then when you put the hammer back in it will rub the sides of the frame, leaving you baffled why. Some "gunsmith" Hocus Pocus convoluted trade secret...

  • IMHO that is one of El Paso Saddlery's best holster models. They used to be S.D. Meyers Leather Company in years gone by and I have both the 12 Round Loop Ammunition Carrier, a 6 round carrier, and two Border Patrol River holsters, one for rough duty and another for wearing with our dress uniform. They were semi-custom since they added a muzzle plug to each and a thicker (10-11 oz.) safety straps.

  • That leather lining on that holster used to be rolled over the edge and then stitched. It's true, QC at all levels has definitely died at that leather maker. I was a customer of El Paso Saddlery for over thirty years. I have a room full of their unrivaled craftsmanship; but I wouldn't order a thing from them today, not even if it were free. Without going into details, the last gunbelt & holster I ordered from them about five years ago, hangs on the wall unused, as a reminder that nothing good lasts forever (the holster itself being sent back twice, and it still ended up being for a gun model I don't even own). Yet, I still wear a gunbelt & holster I bought from them in 1989, my pride and joy, along with the other pieces that were once the best leather products on the market. Sad really; I hear they're still riding the "COVID Excuse horse" as well (Covid & Cocaine, not a very successful combination). That's a grand piece of steel you got there; too bad the timing caused the cylinder bolt to gouge that drag line. Too bad Colt sold out to a Czech company as well.......... Happy Trails

  • You could try wet molding the holster again and push that edge out so it's folded outwards a bit. I've seen that done in a few videos where people make holsters.

  • Tremendous video!!!! I just learned of Ed Janis' passing, Today! Very unfortunate! a few Years back, I tried to get him to do some work on an old Colt Bisley Model I had. He refused the job because he didn't have the time to devote in order to properly, restore the Pistol to original Factory specifications! Now, that's what I call, professionalism!! Excellent!

  • I was fortunate enough to get Mr. Bob Munden to customize my Colt .45 SAA before he passed away back in 2012 and yes saved all my paperwork for if I ever wanted to sell it at auction it would have all the provenance that he actually did the work on it and would fetch a pretty penny I suppose but I've only fired about one box of ammo out of it and it still has the COLT 1-2-3-4 hammer clicks although they are silent but still audible to the ear !!! And this revolver shoots accurate as all get out and a hoot to shoot !!!!

  • Excellent case colors on that Colt. the holster is the “Wes Hardin” model based on a left hand version he carried an 8” S&W American .44 Russian in. I talked with the woman who owns that gun and holster, inherited from her dad. j paid around $300 to have the late Eddie Janis rebuild a Colt .45 twenty plus years ago. AZ. SAA expert Jim Martin rebuilt the mate to it and they are both excellent. Jim knew EJ well. EDIT: Just kept watching and saw you have all that paperwork including the holster. that’s great.

  • About feeler gauges, that hammer screw is always screwed in tight and it doesn’t apply to that. But a gauge was probably used to maintain tight clearance between the cylinder face and the forcing cone, or rear of the barrel. Thad Rybka (?) is or was a highly respected holster maker.

    @johnnyquest3707@johnnyquest3707 Жыл бұрын
    • I don't think he was talking about that. I agree you would use feeler gages for what you have described. However, that's for the actual gunsmithing part of the work, not stripping the gun apart and reassembling. I won't consider unthreading the barrel to be part of stripping the gun down. It is possible he misunderstood me and thought maybe I meant taking off the barrel, but I think he was on the same page as me. From his website www.peacemakerspecialists.com/dissembling-and-assembling-the-colt-single-action/: "The above disassembly / assembly instructions are for stock Colts that need internal parts replacements or adjustments. If you have a Peacemaker that has our “Gunslinger Deluxe Action Job” it is not recommended or necessary to detail strip or disassemble your Colt. When we perform a “Gunslinger Deluxe Action Job” on your Colt we maximize the reliability to the point that we even use special assembly techniques that require special measurement tools during the final assembly process. Disassembly for normal cleaning should be limited to removal of the cylinder and grips. Proper internal lubrication can be accomplished without total disassembly. If your Colt has shot in excess of 1000 rounds and you would like to clean the internals, please contact Peacemaker Specialists for further information."

    • Some additional info. I got a letter from Turnbull. In addition to the color case hardening discussed in the video, they did the original Colt color case hardening back in 2012 which is interesting as I think that means they are doing the color case hardening for the production Colt Peacemakers now.

  • Drag lines occur in all revolvers.

    @davidandersen4218@davidandersen4218 Жыл бұрын
    • I don't believe you should see a drag line on a single action army if the cylinder bolt is properly timed. From the Peacemaker Specialists website... www.peacemakerspecialists.com/how-to-tell-if-your-colt-is-in-proper-tune-and-time/ "If the bolt dwell is too short, the bolt will rise too early and hit outside of the approach and scratch a line in the finish. If the dwell is too long, the bolt will rise on the corner of the lock notch and peen the corner down until the cylinder will not stay in the locked position because the notch corner will be too low to hold the bolt head."

    • @@tristaneuritt9556 , we agree to disagree. I haven't seen a revolver that doesn't have a drag line that has been shot regularly.

      @davidandersen4218@davidandersen4218 Жыл бұрын
    • Having two perfectly timed Peacemakers myself, I can testify that they don't occur in all revolvers until you've shot the timing out of synch; which depending on the individual pistol may take more or less rounds down range. In any case, with a finely assembled "Colt" SAA with a precise timing job, the drag line should eventually replicate a fine silky strand of hair from a scantily clad Indian maiden....... not a brutal gouge of a ten penny nail like you find on most of those cheap Italian knock-offs......

    • He's a rank beginner alright, but I always encourage young guys when they get into guns. SAA culture is vastly different than modern gun dogma, the handling/firing of them as totally different. Find someone who will bring you up to speed on cowboy style gun handling. I say its the most fun of gun disciplines.

  • I can’t imagine that you can tighten the hammer screw enough to crush the solid steel frame. The gunsmith sounds like a BS artist. Those guns were designed to be taken apart. Remember they were originally designed for black powder cartridges which requires detailed cleaning of the firearm after a firing session.

    • Well to my understanding this gunsmith before he had passed had been in the automotive racing industry earlier in his career. You think about changing a tire and how you torque down the nuts there, in a certain pattern. Perhaps the screws in the SAA frame are treated similarly. I don't think I would use the word "crush". Materials elastically (temporarily) or plastically (permanently) deform. As long as the material experiences load below it's yield strength it should elastically deform. Now this deformation might be 0.0001" but if a load is a applied transversely to a cantilever beam, which the side of the SAA frame would be, there will be some deflection. And by extension the frame will be trying to spring back and applying force on the screw. I believe this force will keep the screws from backing out on prolonged firing. I do remember reading on his webpage or in speaking to him he doesn't use locktite. So if you had feeler gauge that fit exactly in the gap between the hammer and the frame then tighten down the screw up until the point where the gauge won't move if you tried to slide it back and forth, so say 0.001 movement from the frame, youve established where the screw head needs to index to get the force you want from the frame on the screw. So back out the screw a little, remove the gauge, then index the screw head back to the spot you want. I had an Uberti SAA and the screws after shooting from the recoil would come loose over time, I've shoot this Peacemaker specialists Colt SAA quite a lot and the frame screws have never come loose. So that's my theory on the feeler gauge for reassembly.
