4x Quonset home-studio: 40 years of artistic simple living

2021 ж. 24 Шіл.
500 516 Рет қаралды

In the desert of Joshua Tree, Bobby Furst's home/studio/compound is an artistic wonderland built from 4 Quonset huts, 3 Airstream trailers, and a shipping container. When Furst left LA for the desert he erected one two-story 50' by 30' Quonset hut with a lofted bedroom and industrial kitchen and bathroom.
As his first build became more of a theater/concert space, First bought another kit and erected a second, third and fourth unit. Using just a friend or two and the help of a Genie Lift, he erected the building's arch by arch with just the simple bolt technology.

I absolutely LOVE what you've done......and would love to chat with you for like a month,,just to scratch the surface of ideas that are floating around in your head....GREAT JOB. INCREDIBLE,,, I'm really at a loss for words at the entire complex and the TIME YOU'VE INVESTED,,,not to mention what it must've cost to have concrete brought out to the desert......Thank You for sharing🥰

    • @@postedback , joshua tree is a wealthy people getaway retreat. it is in a busy area, I mean, it is not on the middle of nowhere. and it sits over a oasis, the whole yucca and coachella valley are oasis, and if I am not mistaken close to palm spring there are the biggest natural non-dam oasis in the world. so they get water from the underground rivers. the internet is very good because those 2 valleys are highly populated, especially the coachella one (with over 250k dwellers) and it is just 3 hours away from LA.

  • A true artist knows how to shape his environs. Walden is an example, so is Furst's home. But Furst has a command of physical space that's really exceptional. Wow. He pulls from so many disciplines (each with mastery) and then assembles the total space. In other words, his art has the context of his home and his home is an expression of his life. And it's open, walkable, inviting. So he's taken the last and final step of any great artist ( in my opinion ) of inviting in the local community for interaction. So? Who cares? Well, this is important when presenting art. It's the opposite of the 'gallery star artist with the genius concept art' we all loath because they're all ego. Anyway, really nice to see, thanks for the visit!

  • It’s wonderland in the desert! This man is an amazing artist! That rusted out siding just blew my mind! It’s amazing to think that fire 🔥 rain and time made something so beautiful! His genius was seeing it’s beautiful potential and then creating something marvelous from it! I really loved this one, thank you for sharing it! Cheers

  • I had a dream one night that I invented a completely, affordable, self contained living home. That could be placed anywher on our planet. Desert or frozen places too. It had, water, clean air, sanitary facility, solar and wind or water power. Even the ability to erect a small garden for food with some chickens too. All I need is the people who are knowledgable in these items too colaborate with me to make this happen. We have the technology and tools to do this. So many people could benefit from this. The money spent on war could be better spent on this for damn sure ! I need to meet with this guy ! WOW, how did he do all that ? He must have had helpers ! I lived in a quonset hut when my Father was in the Navy. It was all he could afford at the time. The Navy provided it for their men with families. AWESOME !
