Went homeless. Done Guerrilla Grazing by choice ever since

2021 ж. 14 Там.

Aaron Fletcher has grazed his sheep and lived off the land as a traveling shepherd for 12 years. He calls it guerrilla grazing (a step above guerrilla gardening, he says) and he lets his sheep graze - with permission- public parks and side lots. Homeless by choice, he offers his services to small farms in exchange for food or a place to stay (though half his calories come from his sheeps’ milk).
Watch the other two stories with Aaron Fletcher's:
- Part II: Staying Healthy, diet & lifestyle tips • Homeless shepherd shar...
- Part III: Radical simplicity & autarky on a solo wagon micro-farm • Homeless shepherd star...
Aaron lives in a tiny metal cart home pulled by his sheep he has a bed. It packs a refrigerator/evaporative cooler, a shower (he uses a pesticide sprayer to pump up the water pressure), power (solar panel), sun oven, a mailbox stove for heat, bicycle tire wheels and a corrugated plastic roof.
Fletcher makes cheese and butter from his sheep milk and forages for seeds, fruits, vegetables and herbs. He’s created a map for foragers in his region. He makes some money with his scythe business - cutting noxious weeds for locals -, but he insists he’s not interested in making money and just hopes to serve as an example for other homeless interested in guerrilla grazing.

  • I met Aaron last summer, grazing his sheep in Talent pastures. You just can't get more real than Aaron. He is what you see, a free human being, away from the politics, food crisis, and more that could be mentioned. This man sets a new standard of life. He is courageous and dedicated to showing us a new way, one that is in harmony with nature, and one which does not feed the corporate greed. He is a master teacher, and an innovator. Thank you Aaron!

There is no winning and only a path of pain. the choices are do you want Pain-path A or Pain-path B. even the "wealthy" is in pain, the only difference is they bully 'better' and can hide that well. And very brave too, I think. Because with no dog to guard him, what if anyone comes to attack him or steals or trashes his stuff when he isn't there. He must therefore always be near his little wagon. Another thought: For a woman this would probably be more risky... Amazing, those clever stoves and ovens! Do we have this in Europe?... Very interesting to see that now that he is successful with his life-style and ventures he will most likely never want to live any other way! • about 70% of your diet can come from dairy sheep if you are willing to go on a keto diet and get most of your calories from sheep butter. the remaining 30% comes from meat, organ and a small amount of carbs needed to optimize the keto diet that you can get from raising other animals or selling the lambs once they are just old enough or once they are old enough that they are able to produce lambs themselves. a benefit of raising 3 dairy sheep and a dairy ram is that you dont really need the skills to identify wild mushrooms as its often good enough to gorilla garden mushrooms by ordering mushrooms blending them then pouring them into suitable logs or areas while getting the rest of your calories and protein directly or indirectly from the sheep.

We met in Ashland in 2o13 when he was starting a hostel that would allow homeless or housefree folks to live in a building in exchange for community service in Ashland, Medford (Oregon) or otherwise. I was a "nomad" or "housefree" at the time as well by choice and as an experiment. We have kept in touch periodically through the years. Aaron is the real deal. So glad to see him on here ! And my mind blown. I met him before the sheep and wagon project started. I helped out with the project which met a lot of resistance from the inevitable real estate overlords. He made an indelible impression on my life and inspired me to (attempt) to make a work-trade hostel in my hometown of Bellingham, Washington when I returned. What he's doing comes from within, he made a choice to live without restrictions. Overall, he's content with his decision, free of worries in terms of economic obligations. Thank you for sharing this, truly inspirational not only how he honours his animals that are his family sort of speaking but how he cares for them for what they offer him. Home!

    • I love the way he treats his sheep, talks to them and they understand what he is saying and love to stay around him, do not wander as he is their security and their father. He is a remarkable man who has live the way he wants it, although there may be difficult times. Hopefully he gets some extra funds for when he needs to purchase things and use public facilities. A gentle soul who takes nothing but gives so much in so many ways. I pray God will keep his angels with him and assure his daily needs are met. He should be proud of who he is and not feel he needs to explain anything. He loves to share in educate. He could help many homeless, maybe write a book?? That would take time but worth so much to many who would like to follow his way.

    • Really funny thing is I have been a farmer my entire life, not like corn fields for miles or other mega agriculture but like beef cattle (as the only real source of income), and chickens, and rabbits and goats, and pigs, 3 acre gardens, and 90 acre hay fields all to keep our family going by producing our own food for the most part and a modest income. That said I always looked at the sides of the road from our farm to the next town thinking more grass grows their than in our hay fields. Imagine if that grass was utilized the way this man does. Someone could graze in told numbers of sheep right down the sides of the road. I mean it's 25 miles between towns here with 50 feet of road side grass almost continuously on each side. I did the math that's 151.515acres on each side of that road
